In Kerala, Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapy at the peak of southwestern monsoon is not the exclusive right of human beings, God's Own country. Hundreds of domesticated elephants too get this refreshing health experience in God's Own Country. Dozens of pachyderms under temple boards and rich owners started getting the thirty-day monsoon rejuvenation therapy on Friday, the first day of the Karkadakam month of the Malayalam calendar.
Major temple administration boards like the Guruvayur Devaswom Committee, Kochi Devaswom Board and Thiruvambady Devaswom Board would give the therapy to the elephants they own using medicated mixtures, apart from regular and sumptuous ...

This is madness. Such a majestic animal Chained up and all stood inline. With ropes tied through they're ears not to mention the sticks aka "attitude adjuster". But thankfully there are genuinely fantastic organisations out there.

i think its sad that these temple elephants are kept chained and captive, unable to take mud and dust baths. they look terrible with all that pink showing on their skin. the noise from the people is so loud and annoying, even more so for them. they should be foraging and eating trees, bushes and grasses. they are birds in a gilded cage and very unhappy.

Evil practice to keep elephants in chains , wound them grievously with sharp ankush , force them to obey unnatural commands , force them to walk on hard surfaces damaging their feet and sit on their back damaging their delicate neck. Release all captive elephants including kumki elephants in the forest to roam free in the forest without chains .

Can that also be applied to dogs, cats, horses, and every other animal you keep in enclosed spaces or chains? From what I know. Indians are very cultural people who respect all living things. Conservation efforts in India fare much better than in southern africa. Lions, Tigers, Rhinos - all these species were once on the brink of extinction in the country. Now they thrive with a healthy population. You highlight the worse in these people, paying absolute no regard to others. Ever heard of the saying, "One apple spoils the bunch."? Research before blatantly pointing out what you perceive in the one video you watched.

Also the majority of mahouts treat their elephants very well. The elephants are almost like house pets, only having the privileges to enjoy life in the wild. They are well fed and loved equally. The elephant has it all in its power to retaliate to abuse. They're bloody walking forts, for god's sake. But they choose to stay, because the majority of mahouts treat them with compassion. and the elephants return the favor.

No. I eat plant based only. I have friends who shut them down though. The person asked what is with the chains. Answer... These are all festival elephants they are used to make money leasing them out to agent /brokers who hire a mahout team an they rent to mostly other temples who don't have elephants as a service to carry their deity atop the elephants heads. It's business. Nothing religious about this elephant leasing business. Although they are rented for rituals by temples. They rented to Muslims, Christians and of course Hindus. It's huge business. Temple elephants are mostly female and gentle. They bless people for money by tapping them on the head. Festival elephants are for business making fast money. Because it's a leasing game the mahouts change with each new leased elephant and they beat them to make them obey. They are not interested in the relationship with the elephant. The beatings called Nannuchattum, They also come into musth when festival season is in full swing. So they also beat the elephant to make him obey after musth. Called ketti Azhikkel They like it if he's wounded coz they think it is easier to control him. Both new leases and after musth beatings are to make him obey n get out to the festivals and get rented n bring in the money. They are killing too many during or as a result of these beatings. They starves them during musth and he is chained on all fours literally cannot move. They sleep n defecate and eat if they are fed, all in that spot. They are often abandoned during musth which is 3 mths long or more because the heightened testosterone makes him dangerous n he hates his mahouts usuallyhey rent the top celebrity elephants for upto n more US $5500 - US $2500 for lesser popular elephants per festival and they are ferried around the state in trucksand participate in at least 2 or 3 per 24 hous This has bad effect on the elephants and often get sick Many die and are killed off after festivals season. They take out full insurance, large amounts insured for. So if he can't work or becomes a liability and gets sick n dies. They claim. Vets are corrupt, & police . They are also hired or rented out for weddings and for illegal logging. Elephants are cheaper than machines. There is much more to this hugely corrupt business, The answer is they have to were chains in public places because as u could imagine, the elephants have a short fuse during Musth and try to run. Sometimes run over people. The chains can be unhooked anddrags behind makes it easier to catch him . When they are not walking their legs are hobbled together.

OpiateX No dogs or cats, hmm? No fish or birds either? Lets see.... You do have bacteria in your gut, I presume? Leave them be... A great animals rights activist like you shouldn't trap little helpless bacteria in the toxic environs of your gut. It's no better than keeping elephants in chains, you see. Rip open the casing and let your inner flora and fauna have a taste of sweet freedom.

I don't ride horses, don't eat beef, don't eat chicken, dont ride bulls and so on. Im against all exploitation of animals for human pleasure. Especially at this point in our civilization we don't need to exploit them any more. BTW point out other wrongs prevalent in the society is not an excuse for perpetuating one particular one that you have vested interest in. No one one said that problems, especially human created ones, have to solved in a serial order.

meh, it;s so sad... humans treating animals like low human beings, expecting them to behave like a human woudl do and not having patience with them, forcing things on them only with their brains and without using their hearts for reasoning... there is such a big difference between wild elephants and the captive ones, the latter being so much more stressed... except maybe when they are lucky and owned by someone who loves them and gives them what they naturally need

Subham Majumdar actually, you haven't read my message correctly. I was generally criticizing how things go OVERALL with the captive elephants and tourism industry in countries such as India or Thailand where they are highly mistreated, NOT necessarily these particular elephants in the above video. Because the sad truth is, due to the lack of knowledge, money, or time, many elephant owners can't provide the necessary things for them to be happy (and the owners are just as unhappy as well or strive to make a living out of their animals).
