In this deep and uplifting dialogue, Thomas interviews therapist and author Terry Real about how relationship can be approached as a spiritual practice. Terry describes in detail how we can apply loving self-discipline to contain our inner child, heal old wounds, act with compassion, and move towards greater intimacy even during the most trying moments in our intimate relationships.
Recorded at the Celebrate Life Festival in August, 2018.

So amazingly truthful. I feel so grounded after listening to both Thomas and Larry. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and teaching the skills of dancing through harmonies and disharmonies....The path toward.s evolution is to be truthfily ccnnected to ourselves, our partners and our societies at large. .

What Terry said about the wounded part always being with you (vs going away when you get far enough along in your healing) really resonated in a powerful way for me. As I was registering my response, I became aware of that wounded self being a very important, highly sensitive guide, who would alert me whenever something moves in a direction that doesn't feel safe or isn't really honoring or nourishing for me. Sometimes things slip past those boundaries I am learning to rebuild, and this cherished part of my being would be really good at giving me a heads up. But my wounded self wants me to find a more affirming way to identify her. This is a great conversation between two very wise and heart centered men - a real pleasure to be invited to sit in on the conversation.

Terry and Thomas are wise guys. Im hoping many men especially will hear this. Many females will stop their screaming at men. We have to take responsibility for our wounded selves. All of us are wounded people, none are without our wounds. May there be great healing and wholeness in our world through this teachings and beautiful learning.

Just before 50:00 - when I said to my self and God, towards the end of a 16 year relationship, if this is how a partnership is, it's good enough, my whole world blew apart. Really, I thought I had come to a healthy measure of acceptance of my partner's issues and those were less important than being together. Literally, the next day, everything changed. Inside of a year I could barely be in the same room with him, never mind being touched. It was as though God wanted me to have a period of relief from major changes during the previous 5 years or so, and once that was accomplished, the deeper work was required, and my marriage did not survive. Mostly, I'm grateful for the way things unfolded, but I'm much more conscious of when something matters to me and requires attention, and when it is inconsequential.

Such an incredibly clear, relational framework which gives such a great contour to framing and understanding our relational spaces, both how we relate to ourselves and to others! Terry with his funny bone keeps it witty and real. His personal experiences and his journey to healing add hope and enrich these ideas further! Thank you both for this incredible exchange!

@18:00, “When I’m triggered, it is about fear, anger and control.” Well, you left out one of the most important parts. It is also, most importantly, about, “Feeling safe.” It is not just about “faith” or “benevolence” that is going to hold oneself up (during being triggered, fighting) but about allowing if one can find it (and not blaming oneself if not) about pausing, breathing and allowing a moment or two of interoceptive presencing of “safety” to slip in. In others, it is not just a mental or cognitive exercise but beneath words and bodily based registration.

I have it in me this is something I will have as a late bloomer void of a healthy relationship at age 56. I've worked on myself my whole life I'm ready. My partner hopefully has done the work as well or it won't work. Especially if they push the blame instead of taking responsibility for themselves.

I so much enjoy listening to your podcasts, lectures. However, it was totally annoying to me with such loud background laughter. A couple of extra loud laughs were distracting to your talk. I wanted to turn the volume down on the audience! I love to listen to you tho!!

As a foreign whose English is second language i could catch every word said except a few occasions where using subtitles were utilized. I guess it is more of resistance to hear what Truth was coming up in this very alive lively genuine conversation. And audience was very receptive attentive and their questions were very proper and relevant.
