Relationship Between Hormones and Mental Health

Can you specify what doses of progesterone and estrogen are good for someone who is (apparently) sensitive to progesterone? I have/had PMDD and started taking a pill with 150/30microgram of progesterone/estrogen. My mood is stable but my boobs have been hurting for 3 months (since i started the pill) and even though I take the pill continuously I have spotting and sometimes even quite intense cramping. Do you have suggestions for pills with lower dosages? Or do you think the nuvaring could be a good alternative?

Hi Linda, thank you for your question. It's hard to provide you with proper medical advice without a consultation however. There are many different kinds of progesterones; and the different ways they're mixed and matched is why there are so many different kinds of birth control pills available. Certainly taking high dose progesterone or certain kinds of progesterones can cause breast tenderness and one of the side effects of taking birth control pills continuously is spotting or what we call breakthrough bleeding. Recommending the right one will really depend on a review of your medical history and current medications.
