Loved the conversations in this podcast. Just wanted to add to the topic of unpaid internships, you never know where they can lead you. My son did several unpaid digital marketing internships over about 18 months, whilst also working in a paid job 2 days a week. One day the guy he was interning for became ill and was going to be off work for several weeks. The company was worrying how they would get several jobs done that were coming up in the next few days. My son stepped up and said I know I can do this, he had been helping the other guy for weeks and knew what needed to be done. The company was so blown away by his work and his ability to step into the role so quickly that they hired him straight away, so the time learning the job and being willing to help out paid off in the long run.

As an audiophile, I'm a snob for podcast setups....and, Sara, this is GOOD.....WAY GOOD. I'll tell you why. Years ago, when I was doing a pro recording sesh, I set up as simple a stereo setup as you can imagine.....and it blew the minds of those who were involved. Less CAN be more, in a lot of instances.....never lose that mantra.....

I really loved te conversation about unpaid internships, having done 2 this summer. I worked in a commercial photo studio about 6-football fields large and I worked on a movie set with Hallmark. Both came to me through personal connections, both came from the point of view where their budget could not pay me, both businesses were invested in helping me learn stuff I can't get at school. When I had to leave the movie set early, the director was lamenting that I hadn't been there long enough to learn more stuff. I payed to be there (took out a personal loan for food and stuff), and I slept in a hotel room a boss from a previous internship personally called in a favor to get me. I have paid editing jobs to finish, but I out them off, hurting myself financially now, because short as it was, I did learn more on set than I did in a classroom. When I worked at the photo studio, I personally got to work with some of the marketing team from Lowe's, helping them with their Halloween and Christmas ads for this coming year. I learned way more valuable things than if they had paid me money. I just had to hustle "after work" if I wanted/needed money. If you look for an unpaid internship, you can make it very valuable, but you need to be as picky with where you go as they are with who they hire. Making connection with good people is so important. Not just "the right people" who can get you places, but good people, who understand what they are bringing to you-knowledge and connections

I totally relate to what John is saying at 8:40 about feeling the need to make things in my life seem like they aren't as great as they are even though things are great. I am finishing college in December and this summer I have been working really hard to create opportunities for myself as a photographer, and while I love what I am doing right now, I feel like I tend to tone it down when speaking to other people cause I don't want it to come across I am bragging. As for the internship conversation, I had an unpaid internship a few years ago and really enjoyed it and really enjoyed the opportunities that it created for me. I got to do things as a photographer that I wouldn't have gotten to do anywhere else so I got a lot out of my internship. However, my problem, specially in the art industry, is how many unreasonable unpaid internships there are and how many people just expect free work which is probably an entire other conversation in itself. The internship that I had was part time enough that I still went to school and had another part time job, and like I said I loved it. But I am close to graduating and I am still hearing about more unpaid "internships" then paid things in terms of art, and so many of the unpaid internships are crazy to me in terms of work or time commitment. Internships are something that I could spend a very long time talking about in relation to art and also the back and forth of the good vs bad. I think that they are good up until a point and for me at least, photography is something that I have spent so much time working towards, that I was more then willing to put in the time that I needed to with that internship, but I think you should value yourself enough to know that at some point you need to be payed and stop working for free and you need to know what is an actual good opportunity or if it is something that you are just getting used for free work.

good thoughts elizabeth!! yeah i feel like internships in the art world are def where you get the most value but at the same time are often not paid. there's only so much free work one can do!!

Keep being awesome guys. You're both extremely hard working and open minded individuals. I have mad respect for the both of you. You both display the ability openly discuss issues between each other, and try to view things from multiple angles. That's a skill I think everyone should practice, and your guys' discussions here were great. Also, Sarah - If it's any consolation after your rough week; I believe what you're doing with The Creative Exchange is extremely valuable to society. More people need this type of content in their lives, it's real shit. The fact that you get flustered over how to make the brand succeed, and are a little worried about the future, it kinda shows where your heart is at. You want this bad, you're determined. I think that's amazing. Even if you only touch a few individuals with this stuff, getting even one person to think with a more open and creative mind, is a huge success. At least in my books. Anyways, keep creating, y'all are inspiring.

Hi Sara I have a few questions about podcasting that I hope you will answer in the final episode of How To Podcast. 1. How do you feel about podcast sponsorship? When and how should you include them? 2. Should you have a separate website for your podcast? 3. What has been the most challenging part about podcasting? 4. How do yo find podcast guests 5. What is the best way to advertise your podcast. 6. What are the best ways to optimize your podcast for search-ability? 7. What do you use to edit the audio of your podcasts? I have access to Logic Pro and adobe audition. What are the benefits of each? 8. How do you feel about music in podcasts? What should one keep in mind when using music for a podcast? 9. What do you plan out for each podcast? How do you steer your guest in the right direction for a productive podcast? Thank you for your amazing podcast and your how to podcast series. It has really helped and inspired me to start my own podcast 💕

An unpaid internship gives a worker value by being in a professional environment. Essentially that worker leverages a business to do and learn things that might be more difficult to do on their own. The biggest take away for them is the relationships/associations they build. As Sara said, internships are becoming illegal in more and more places. One solution is to make the internship a class. You could charge as little as $1 for that class. The class model adds psychological benefits in the work process as people are more likely to want to maximize the value of their money. It also makes the business think about what value they offer the worker as part of the class. The class model seems like it will be a better alternative going forward because people are more likely to want classes in things they are passionate about rather than scammy internships where they may just be responsible for reading e-mails and getting coffee.

I think free internships can work when done properly. It's an exchange like a normal job you do work and you get paid. However now instead of money, you get paid in knowledge. Where the system starts to break down is when the exchange becomes imbalanced. So say you're at an unpaid internship where all you do is get coffee and sign people in at the front desk, you don't really gain knowledge so this is where people working in those jobs have an issue with it. However on the other side of it, if you have to spend all day teaching an intern how to do something it's wasted time. It has to be a good balance of manual labor/doing the things the boss doesn't have time for (coffee, mail, etc.), and being given the time to shadow someone or being delegated actual field related tasks so you can learn something.

Where I live, 80% of internships are unpaid and they are mandatory to finish college... So yeah. I have mixed feelings about it because I do think it is a way to learn and practice from real experiences. However, many bosses just take advantage of us as students and make us do their job for literally no pay.

I would love to hear John Hill talk more about veganism. I'm vegan and have been for two years and I totally relate why he hates talking about it. I am always willing to have the discussion in person but on the internet it seems so much more daunting because tone is up for interpretation. I never bring up veganism on my blog or channel or instagram out of fear that I'll get shoved into the shoebox of vegans on the interwebs before I even know what I want.
