And also full of horrible things that want to kill you, because nature is red in tooth and claw. Man, the Free Fire Zone from Abe's Oddysee is possibly the most evocative and atmospheric level I've ever experienced in a game. It's stayed with me since childhood, that mystic humming pulsing drone, that starry night sky, that sense of dread, mystery and impending freedom. You could almost feel the cold night breeze as Rupturefarms' rusty pipes and noxious fumes are left behind and you are greeted by a long forgotten view: the stars, the sky. The sound of nature, vast, sleeping but vigilant. The music puts me in a peaceful and curious mood every time I go back to hear it, and I absolutely love it. Favourite piece of ambience, ever
@Shod19903 жыл бұрын
@@cholestroll8937 Hi! Well, you already listed a bunch of very good ones yourself! (the atmosphere in Darkwood is incredible!) The only one of those I've never played is the thief series for whatever reason, may or may not get around to it at some point, all I know is it's well loved. As for recommendations from me in terms of similar atmosphere: - Darkwood brings to mind the Stalker series: atmosphere is generally very immersive and I love the blowout events in Stalker Call of Pripyat. - Then there's the Pathologic series, I haven't played Pathologic 2, but the original Pathologic is a really unique and intriguing (if flawed) experience. - By the same developers as Pathologic, there's a relatively little known game called The Void. That one's even more unique. In terms of sound design, Elite:Dangerous has possibly some of the best I've ever heard in the industry, although it is a very different sort of game from those mentioned above. There's others, but memory fails me right now :)

I like that the tracks tell the player that they're so miniscule compared to the rest of oddworld. Being at the bottom of the food chain was also something interesting, making you feel even more miniscule compared to all the wild animals and oddworld. It sets the scene perfectly. Very cool idea, bud! As someone who's mind is constantly thinking and active, this was great. I am in the middle of uploading an Oddworld New N Tasty series designed to convey the canon storyline through the gameplay, edits etc. Please check the series out. It will all be uploaded by the end of October. Looking forward to Soulstorm, too! Much love.

Strangely the bass is as deep as I remember, even though, at that time, the sound came out of computer speakers from the late 90s

Soulstorms soundtrack massively disappoints, Oddworld used to have such trippy soul filled music 🎶

Yeah it's quite repetitive and forgettable, no unique tracks that fit with each level like they used to. Although I did like the Necrum track in Soulstorm which was like the original Necrum theme from Exoddus.

Yeah, I completely agree, it seemed to lose it's uniqueness on initial playing at least.
