crazy how this music can take you back to childhood memories of Rainy, cold days, sitting in with family and friends getting lost in the SNES games trying to complete them never realizing how much the music tracks really impacted your day to day living. I am grateful to have experienced this side of my childhood. Thank you for such a premium mix of nostalgia. I really enjoyed this.

Wow this brings me back. Back in the day I would record the music from the TV on tape and later transfer it from tape to the PC, to convert it to MP3 and copy it to my 32MB MP3 Player. People were laughing at me for listening to video game music, and it was kind of a relief to discover years later that there are other people on KZbin that cherish this music as well. Thanks for this mix!

How this genre was huge for a short period of time before it faded just as quickly.. Which other generation would get it?
@zetzet132 ай бұрын
I think that every generation has an equivalent in any art form. Regarding Video Games I gave a prompt to chatGPT right now and they gave me this: ### 1980s #### 1. **Text Adventure / Interactive Fiction** - **Timeframe**: Late 1970s to mid-1980s - **First Games**: - *Colossal Cave Adventure* (1976) - Often considered the first interactive fiction game. - *Zork* (1980) - Commercially established the genre. - *Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy* (1984) - Helped expand its appeal. **Contentious Fact**: *Colossal Cave Adventure* is often disputed as the "first" because earlier experimental games were being developed alongside it. - **Commercial Hits**: - *Zork I* (1980) - *Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* (1984) - *The Pawn* (1986) - **Decline**: By the late 1980s, graphical games began to overshadow text-based ones. #### 2. **Arcade Shoot ‘em Ups (Shmups)** - **Timeframe**: Late 1970s to mid-1980s - **First Games**: - *Space Invaders* (1978) - Generally regarded as the first major shoot 'em up. - *Asteroids* (1979) - Popularized space-based shooting mechanics. **Contentious Fact**: Some argue that early titles like *Computer Space* (1971) also qualify as early "shmups." - **Commercial Hits**: - *Space Invaders* (1978) - *Galaga* (1981) - *Defender* (1981) - **Comeback**: Shmups had a brief resurgence in the late 90s and early 2000s with niche releases like *Ikaruga* (2001). ### 1990s #### 3. **FMV (Full Motion Video) Games** - **Timeframe**: Early 1990s to mid-1990s - **First Games**: - *Night Trap* (1992) - Known for its controversial content and reliance on FMV. - *The 7th Guest* (1993) - Helped establish FMV as a key feature in puzzle adventure games. **Contentious Fact**: FMV elements appeared earlier in arcade games like *Dragon’s Lair* (1983), but these games relied heavily on linear paths. - **Commercial Hits**: - *The 7th Guest* (1993) - *Wing Commander III* (1994) - *Phantasmagoria* (1995) - **Decline**: FMV games fizzled out by the late 1990s due to technological advancements in real-time 3D graphics. #### 4. **Point-and-Click Adventure Games** - **Timeframe**: Late 1980s to mid-1990s - **First Games**: - *Maniac Mansion* (1987) - Introduced a new style of inventory-based puzzles. - *King's Quest* (1984) - Helped establish graphical adventure games. **Contentious Fact**: *King's Quest* is often considered the first graphical adventure, but *Maniac Mansion* helped shape the modern interface. - **Commercial Hits**: - *Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge* (1991) - *Day of the Tentacle* (1993) - *Grim Fandango* (1998) - **Comeback**: Brief resurgence in the 2010s with remasters and new titles like *Broken Age* (2014). ### 2000s #### 5. **Rhythm Games** - **Timeframe**: Early 2000s to late 2000s - **First Games**: - *PaRappa the Rapper* (1996) - Pioneered the rhythm-based gameplay. - *Dance Dance Revolution* (1998) - Brought rhythm games to arcades globally. **Contentious Fact**: Early electronic games like *Simon* (1978) involved rhythm-based mechanics, but lacked the complexity of modern titles. - **Commercial Hits**: - *Guitar Hero III* (2007) - *Rock Band* (2007) - *Dance Dance Revolution* (2000s arcade releases) - **Decline**: By the end of the 2000s, over-saturation led to a sharp drop in popularity. - **Comeback**: Rhythm games returned with titles like *Beat Saber* (2019), combining VR with rhythm mechanics. #### 6. **MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games)** - **Timeframe**: Mid-1990s to early 2000s - **First Games**: - *Ultima Online* (1997) - One of the first commercially successful MMORPGs. - *EverQuest* (1999) - Popularized the genre with 3D graphics. **Contentious Fact**: Early MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) from the 1980s are often considered proto-MMO games. - **Commercial Hits**: - *World of Warcraft* (2004) - *EverQuest* (1999) - *Lineage II* (2003) - **Comeback**: MMORPGs have seen periodic revivals, especially in Asia, with titles like *Final Fantasy XIV* (2013). ### 2010s #### 7. **Battle Royale** - **Timeframe**: Mid-2010s to present - **First Games**: - *PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds* (2017) - Considered the first widely popular battle royale. - *H1Z1* (2015) - Pioneered elements of the battle royale mode. **Contentious Fact**: Early mods in games like *Minecraft* and *Arma 2* also featured battle royale-like modes. - **Commercial Hits**: - *Fortnite* (2017) - *PUBG* (2017) - *Apex Legends* (2019) #### 8. **Hero Shooters** - **Timeframe**: Mid-2010s to late 2010s - **First Games**: - *Team Fortress 2* (2007) - One of the first hero-based shooters. - *Overwatch* (2016) - Popularized the genre. **Contentious Fact**: *Team Fortress* mods existed prior to *TF2*, but *Overwatch* truly established the genre’s conventions. - **Commercial Hits**: - *Overwatch* (2016) - *Paladins* (2018) - *Apex Legends* (2019, combined with battle royale elements) ### Hybrid Genre Examples: #### 1. **Metroidvania** - **Combination**: Action, exploration, platformer, RPG - **Commercial Hits**: - *Castlevania: Symphony of the Night* (1997) - *Hollow Knight* (2017) - *Ori and the Blind Forest* (2015) #### 2. **Action RPGs** - **Combination**: RPG, real-time combat - **Commercial Hits**: - *The Witcher 3* (2015) - *Dark Souls* (2011) - *Diablo II* (2000) #### 3. **FPS/Survival Horror** - **Combination**: First-person shooting, horror - **Commercial Hits**: - *Resident Evil 7* (2017) - *The Evil Within* (2014) - *Dead Space* (2008)
