White seabass have made a remarkable recovery in Southern California waters. These fish were heavily overfished, so hatchery programs were put in place to increase the population. These fish are bred, then placed in growout pens to grow them. The program are mostly staffed by volunteers. This particular pen is located in Marina del Rey. There were several volunteers helping load the fish onto the Betty-O sportfishing boat to be taken offshore and released in front of Venice pier. This day, approximately 3500 juvenile seabass were released successfully. This program has made sportfishing for the species much better.
