Are you carrying something heavy that you can't quite let go? Barry uses the old expression "having an albatross around your neck" to explore his experience of what happened when he stuffed into his Shadow everything he couldn't bear as a child growing up in an effed up family. After falling into a deep depression in 2018, he began to do Shadow work in earnest and gradually, over time, his depression lifted and the albatross he'd been carrying for so long was freed.

Barry thank you for being so vulnerable and telling us your story. I too have been reconnected recently with my shadow and this story of yours helps me to get closer to her and spend more time listening to what she has to tell me. Your's and Phil's work is helping me to get braver. Always moving forward.

7:24 yeah ... I also... I've listened to both books. They've helped a lot. You talk in this video about emotional savagry... What about when you're the one that carried that out. And that's the albatross around your neck? When you've been the mean one to others?

Sounds like Barry's family and my family should go out and go bowling since they very similar. My family is like something out of Silence of the Lambs and I am a white sheep of a family of black sheep. I found that Hillary Jacobs Handel's book "It is Not Always Depression" really helps heal these sort of childhood traumas and screwed up family systems. I tried to get Barry to bring Hillary on one of his podcasts but the staff never forwarded my idea despite Hillary being open to the idea. FYI: Hillary Jacobs is the psychologist for Matt Weiner who is the creator of Madmen and the Sopranos.

I’ve read Carl Jung for 30 years. Also a fan of other Jungian analysts. At 50 I’m still having issues understanding the shadow and finding my own. Is it just buried that deep?
