I agree. She didn’t try to take over the whole convo or prove how perfect her experience was. Even though her experience wasn’t as rosy, she did a lot of listening and was comfortable with sharing that her experience wasn’t perfect in fact it was horrible. I love authentic people ♥️

This was so amazing, everything they said was 1000% correct and accurate . I was one of them 11 years ago , I had only 1 family all through out my 2 years of stay. They were so amazing to me. Family forward, I decided to change my J1 to F1 to stay lega l and continue my education, I've been here over a decade, I just recently graduated in Public health and health systems management in University of North Carolina and I'm currently working on my Citizenship. I visit home atleast one's. I'm glad I came across this talk.

On the one side it's an excellent opportunity for young people, however, on the other end there are major downfalls with these programs which borders on human rights violations. I do have first hand experience and know of so many young ladies who have had horrible experiences. Often these families are well aware that the participants are vulnerable in that they don't have families nearby and use it as an opportunity to overwork Au Pairs. Au Pairs are often expected to tend to children around the clock because the parents work long hours whereas others don't have a real desire to be parents.Also these counsellors who serves as the middle person between the family and the Au Pair does not always look out for the Au Pairs, because of the mere fact that they essentially are working for their client (the family) and will overlook many wrongs to keep the family happy. I know of one Au Pair who was assaulted by one of the children who was around 12 years old at the time. I encouraged the young lady to file a police report, the family and agency swept it under the rug. There were multiple tales of Au Pairs just disappearing, and no one knowing where they are. Some of the host-mothers are....let's just say problematic, as they are often unsatisfied and use manipulative tactics to mentally mess with the Au Pairs. For anyone still wanting to part-take in these program this is my advice: Do your research with these agencies, be firm with your boundaries...you are an Au Pair, not a maid, once you are matched with a family just do you part and make sure you take good care of yourself mentally. Lastly, for Au Pairs going it, these people are NOT your family, they will tell you that you are a part of their family...you are not!

Well said, You know this Programs very well my Dear, It's not a Joke. I myself was once an Au pair in America 20years ago, l moved to Arizona at the Beginning of my Program with Indians Family(American Indians), after 2 months l left them because we didn't connect at all and l didn't even like Arizona. My Councillor Found another Family in Pennsylvania for me ( White Jewish Family) and it was Fantastic people, they treated me very well with respect and l did the same to them with their Children, l was part of the Family and the children were Fantastic and I did my Best with them as well until l left America, and that Family wanted me to stay but l refused because I was young and wanted to study not to be Nanny. While living in Pennsylvania, the Cleaner of the Host Family introduced me to a Lady from South Africa whom she knew, so l got invited to a Party one Saturday, where l meet a lot of Black South Africans there, who run away from their hosts Families, and some South Africans were those who decided to stay with their host family after their Contracts ended. I learned a lots there , and to understand that some people can break the rules, both Au Pairs and Hosts Families. It was just a shock to me, And when l started Driving to their places where they live and work, l saw the long hours they work with Kids . I think the Programs can be messy when people lose Control and don't follow rules . Some Au Pairs whom l met when l first arrived in Pennsylvania didn't last, After some months, they returned back to their home Countries, l have always wondered what went wrong but l later discovered about so many problems between them and Families and Rules. Your Absolutely right people should research before Traveling, l am always grateful, everything went well with me.

It’s a good program but it doesn’t work for everyone because some of these young ladies get treated very badly and some families are expecting more from them and if you come abroad you have to Be very strong emotionally because it can be tough!!

I live overseas (not an au pair, I studied overseas and now work in Europe) and I can say living overseas is a great way to have an adventure in your youth. Funding studies or just paying for travel overseas is not practical for a lot of people. So I really like this route is nice as it gives people other ways to see the world. I

I worked as an au pair in Spain during my university summer holiday. Best thing I ever did. The family was very welcoming, they lived in a rural city so for most of the residents it was their 1st time seeing a black person including the 80yr old grandpa who wouldn't even look my way 🤣. Funny thing is, by the end of my stay he was the one that spoke to me the most. Precovid I visited them every year after and was very touched by the efforts of the extended family to learn English. I highly recommend it but always caution people on families that offer you more money than the standard rate. You'll be a nanny/maid Vs au pair

I heard of it when I was in tertiary but people were very secretive about it. I wouldn't do anyway I'm not that adventurous. One thing I would enjoyed is the kids, I love the kids. I'm even thinking of one day opening a daycare. I love that they took the chance, my late brother wanted to go to teach English he was so into it. I love that there are so many opportunities we are not limited to be only in South Africa. Beautiful show

I am a former au pair with Cultural Care Au Pair, I have to say every young women has to take part in this life changing experience before settling. I lived in Washington DC on my first year and on my second year i was in Boston. The best part is that 3 years later i am still in contact and close with my host family and Cultural Care was very supportive of my au pair journey every step of the way. I am grateful for my au pair experience and would not trade it for anything.

In America the au pair stipen is about the same amount the host family pays to the the program via "Cultural care". So you can consider that as a minimum rage or "cheap labor" as you said for you but your host family is paying the double of that for you to be there. I just feel I need to give you that peace of information . The program is regulated by the US government. I am a host family mom for the first time. Our au pair will be here in 3 weeks. I have been watching videos from host families and au pairs to understand both prospective so that I can prepare myself better to host my au pair. Very nice video thank you

Au pairs are not cheap labor, with agency fees, food, gas cell and stipend host families pay $25,000 to $35,000 a year this is more expensive than daycare and nannies can be similar or more expensive depending on where you live

Sometimes with the Aupairing you get to pick a study course to do when the kids go to school. I Aupaired, I think it's good to do it with a plan . To save money, build yourself and consider that you don't want to return home with nothing.

So it's basically a nanny job for snobbish people, very interesting. I remember having this kind of discussion with my colleagues about these kind of jobs. The jobs which are mostly done by foreign people, which locals perceive as low income and or unskilled. Strange that people actually think that adopted accents are forced. I am one of those people who generally change how I speak depending on where I'm living at that point. Ive lived in 3 countries and in many different towns with different cultures. I'm not too sure why it happens but it does. I think I get overly immersed so that living is easier (adaptation comes in different forms). Also some people speak like their primary educator... So might have really grown up speaking that way, she actually speaks like a tonne of South Africans I have encountered.

@Zainab Makalani It's envy. I got used to it eventually. We can't help that we attended the schools we went to. Honestly in the work place my accent has never given me issues so personally I wear it with a badge of honour. I'm also fluent in Setswana, Sepedi and Isizulu so it really doesn't irk me...you shouldn't let it. Being well spoken isn't a crime.

I remember having a whole discussion with my African friends while I was studying in Scotland about those foolish people who study for 1 to 6 years and you could swear they lived in US or the UK their whole lives. I was the only black nonAfrican in my class so people Africans initially thought I was putting on an accent but then they realized I was from the Caribbean… so funny. You’d get insulted if you do that in my country, you’ll be a meme real quick.
