A wonderfully excellent and concise explanation of what relics are and why they are venerated.

How does the church authenticate relics and deal with fakes? It's certainly a thing that's happened. During the middle ages and Renaissance there were enough peices of the "True Cross" for something like a half dozen crosses. Not trying to be combative or accusatory or anything just curious.

Interesting question, pity there was no answer for such a long time Here is my view: There are holly relics, that may have no dispute about their authenticity because of their features: they are incorruptible, they are fragrant , they offer healings or have some other extraordinary idioms. In other cases it is no so profound. What is the most important to be understood, is that the holiness of relics is not a matter of DNA, but a gift of the Holly Spirit to the Church. As such ,every holly relic venerated and honoured by the Church, radiates the Grace of the Holly Spirit ,even if does not belong to the saint it is attributed.

But they didn't put Elisha's body on display, or cut pieces of it to send around. The protestant NAR movement from Bethel did this thing where they would go to grave yards, lay on graves and do "grave soaking" to absorb spiritual power or blessing from dead Christians. They would receive "anointing" from big wig protestant believers who died. It's one of the reasons I left charismatic craziness and looked into Orthodoxy. And now I learn about this. I don't know.

How do you know they are authentic?

We have relics in Orthodox Church because we have holy men/women. Those who do not have Saints can't have relics. Is there any known saint that is produced by the Protestantism.? Crickets.!

Kierkegaard, maybe. But he was kind of a weird dude, and constantly pissed at the church establishment at the time (they were leaning into hegelianism)

The catholics claim to have. Honestly I‘m orthodox and have a huge problem with this dead body cult in orthodoxy. They talk about uncorupted bodies but every single one is corrupted and in a process of rotting. And people want to kiss dead bodies I just don‘t get it. Let the bodies rest…. It‘s disturbing.

I would posit that Betsie and Corrie ten Boom are great candidates for Protestant saints. As a former Evangelical, I am not comfortable asking any of the evangelicals I looked up to as heroes of the faith to pray for me, with the exception of these two women.

There are countless Protestants who were martyred for Christ. Obviously they are non canonized by the EO church.
