I used Clapham Common station every day during a 6-month sojourn in the area. Shortly after I moved there late in 1974, the down escalator was dismantled for repair and everyone had to walk down the stairs to the platforms - which fortunately aren't too far below the surface. Throughout my time there, no progress whatever was made, beyond attachment or removal of the odd sprocket wheel. For all I know, people are still having to use those stairs!!

I actually saw King William Street on a special visit in the 1980s. It was fascinating for many reasons. It was used as a WW2 air raid shelter and still had the "Careless Talk Costs Lives" posters on the walls. We then walked down the tunnels part way under the Thames (until it got too wet underfoot) and it was strange to hear ships' propellers directly above your head - they felt very close! I have always thought KWSt would make an interesting tourist attraction. The small early C&SLR engines struggled to climb the bank into it. I remember the narrow island platform at Angel as well, you felt uncomfortably close to the trains on a busy day.

You call that a wide platform? There's quite a few in Montreal that are easily that wide and even wider then that. The older narrower cut and cover stations on the green line aren't as appreciated by passengers as the newer deep level stations that might as well be underground cathedrals. There's truly something to be said about brutalist architecture. When thinking about brutalist architecture, a lot of peoples think of a number of large concrete buildings dotted throughout of the city and it really does not get much love at al. Many think that those buildings should be torn down. The brutalism style is known for it's use of concrete as a primary material, for being big and monumental. It's a style that is fully realised in the Montreal Metro, but interestingly enough, the metro stations aren't associated with brutalism in the collective mindset, and yet, it's everywhere in those stations. The thing that the Montreal metro does very well is leaving exposed concrete while adding patterns and shapes to the concrete and just enough color to make the entire ensemble very interesting.

If you want to see a few more bits of the C&SLR, go to the Elephant and castle, and Borough stations. Particularly the northbound platforms and look at the roof. There are two differing levels where the platforms were extended to accommodate longer trains when the Northern line came into being during the early part of the 20th century.

After a temporary power station, at Great Dover Street, the line was powered from a power station at Stockwell, building still there I think, until 1915 when it became powered from Lots Road power station in Chelsea, opened in 1905. It would seem that, in the early days, station lighting was obtained from gas, electric lights on the trains. On opening the traction voltage was 450 volts with just a centre conductor rail, but that did prove inadequate to get the trains up a steep gradient and the distance of the end of the line from the power station! From the beginning there were tunnel lights that could be switched on by the signalman and there was a pair of copper wires in the tunnel that the driver could use to clip on a telephone and talk to the signalman. So, tunnel lights and tunnel telephone are still there on the system but are relics of the first line to be built!

OMG. I was working in the building next to the station in the 1970's. One of the guys I was working with said there was a disused station next door and would we like to visit it. So 2 girls myself and him went to the basement and through an unlocked door into the station. I remember seeing latrines and posters from the war that the paper had disappeared leaving the print stuck on the walls. He suggested we walk through the tunnels so we set off. After a few minutes we heard strange noises and he said we should turn back but I wanted to carry on. The noise became louder and we became frightened . He shouted we should go back now so we turned around and started running ahead of the thousands of rats that lived down there. I never went back. I know why... By the way great videos. Love them.

I lived at Morden so the Northern line was my transportation into the west end. I didn’t like it one bit. After a few yards we were plunged into darkness for the remainder. As for those island platforms, far too dangerous for today’s crowds. During the war my father did the daily trip from Morden to Edgware to work at an aircraft factory. I remember seeing a picture of a double decker bus disappearing down a bomb crater above the tube line, Balham ....see bus in a bomb crater 1940 on google. When l used the line the rolling stock was 1935 vintage. Much better now. BTW l got stuck on the bakerloo line just before Regents Park for an hour and a half, old stock, no p a system, summer rush hour, no air conditioning, overcrowded, overheated. I was beginning to panic but luckily my Tom Sharpe book, Wilt, took my mind off things. After that l travelled to Paddington by bus.

You can see how "wide" the island platform was at Angel, there is a brass strip, between the tiles, running the full length of the Southbound platform approximately along the line of the old platform face. Also the entrance to Angel in Islington High St is a new one, the original entrance is around the corner in City Rd, using lifts only. The rebuild came about because the old lifts were in major need of rebuilding/replacement, so the new building erected on Islington High St had the requirement of fitting the new station set into the planning permission.

Really good video Jago - would be great if the island platform at Clapham Common and Clapham North were widened, like the one at Angel was. Modern passenger numbers require it.

Worth a look at the original Stockwell Station Too. (oh, you did, sort of) Angel used to have lifts the side exit is still in place. Add a date for Angels platform change, it seems like yesterday. used to give me panic attacks on them.

@@JagoHazzard excellent!! People think I’m mad because I’m crazy about the tube, railways and their buildings. I’ve been to the disused tunnels at Clapham South (I think) and Euston. I’ve even been to 55 Broadway. Fascinating building

Really enjoy all your stories about the tube. The old Angel station terrified me as a child , I used to wait halfway up the staircase!. Would love to know more about the old station between Old Street, and Angel. Look forward to watching more of your videos, do some more stair challenges, I always count the steps now!!! Kind regards...

As a Battersea Boy, Clapham Common is my local Northern Line station and I strangely agree with your sentiments about its "look". Lived near Kennington and agree with you there too. Live near Battersea Park now and can't wait for the NL spur to the power station complex. Keep up the good work. I think I'll subscribe...!

Another interesting tale of a section of the Tube about which most of us know nothing. Now here's a question for you ...I live in Harrow and often travel from Harrow and Wealdstone into Central London. There's a noticeable difference in level between the station platform and the floor of the train, to the extent that it is very difficult for a disabled person to use. London Overground also use the station but their rolling stock is newer - until it gets to Euston, where, again, there is a big different in height between train and platform. It's quite an old station and as I'm sure you know, was built to serve the main line trains running from Euston to the Midlands. After this ramble, the question is - was the Bakerloo rolling stock originally higher so that passengers could step easily onto the platform? I don't remember it being so. Any ideas? Daisy
@JagoHazzard
@JagoHazzard 5 жыл бұрын
No, the Bakerloo has always been very low, but the service to Harrow and Wealdstone actually pre-dates the Bakerloo. In 1917, the Bakerloo took over the service from the London and North Western Railway, who operated conventional trains. So they were stuck with the old platforms. Actually, the video I’m currently filming (which should go up in about 3 weeks) indirectly deals with this very subject. Many thanks for commenting!

isa9engineer a by which route? I believe that the Jubilee line to Stanmore was originally the Metropolitan line but I maybe mistaken.
@PopeLando
@PopeLando 4 жыл бұрын
@@patl709 Most changed line on the Underground. Built by the Metropolitan Railway out of Baker Street, it was later connected to a deep tube and three extra stations and transferred as a whole new branch of the Bakerloo line. Then in 1979 the Bakerloo branch to Stanmore became part of the Jubilee Line (without which, the original JL would have been 4 stations long!)

Where tube stock and mainline stock used the same stations, I believe there was a "compromise" height for the platforms - which was a little too high for the tube trains and a little too low for the bigger ones. Jackson and Croome refer to them more than once in "Rails Through The Clay". Part of the aborted Northern Heights project would have involved platform rebuilds of this kind.
