ABOUT MICHAEL NUGENT:
Michael Nugent is an Irish writer and activist. He has written three books, co-written two and was one of the three writers of comedy musical play I, Keano. He has campaigned on many political issues, often with his late wife Anne Holliday, and he is chairperson of the advocacy group Atheist Ireland. He argues that atheism provides a better model of reality, and a better basis for morality, than believing in gods; that atheists can enjoy the benefits that many people get from religion, without the harmful effects; and that the state should be secular, promoting neither religion nor atheism. He writes a blog about happiness and atheism, and he supports Bohemians and Leeds United football clubs.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY:
The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 190 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

All that coughing you can hear is a deliberate tactic by some of the religious in the audience to try and put this side of the argument off their stride as they're speaking, I've seen that happen before in debates I've attended. Here is a quote that would never pass the lips of a senior leader of any Abrahamaic religion, "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” The Buddha

I am not sure, but to me it seems that pretty much all the issues mentioned are just in the interpretations of some misguided people, not intrisically in the religions or in religion in geeneral, since there are religions which seem to cause only very rarely such trouble since one cannot make such interpretations there. So, the problem might be not religion, but the human nature.

#OrganizedReligion has always been a challenge, but I believe it may not be so much a problem with the concepts, as the humans running those organizations and the humans following them - which is the same problem with every organization, business, government agency, academic institution, NGO, army or anything else. Perhaps religion just gives justification too easily. But authority usually does, regardless of the organization in my observation. As a non-religious person, those are my observations, care to debate?

Richard Blackmore I think he might be saying that it's a change of subject to say that other things cause harm. We are discussing religious harm or help in a debate format. If the argument is 'Spanish bullfighting is barbaric" it is a change of subject and thus a fallacy to say "Well, so is Irish hare-coursing!". It may well be true but that sheds no light on the subject at hand.

AMEN to everything that man just said. Also as he said, do not lose your focus or be distracted by claims that "religion also does good". What was being asked was "does religion harm society". Not whether religion also does good, and not whether other things also do bad. His main point here was simple, DO NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT! Stay on subject and ANSWER THE QUESTION. Something religious people don't like to do. “Morality is doing what is right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right.” - H.L.Mencken “The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.” - George Orwell "Religion is a phase a species goes through when it evolves enough intelligence to ask profound questions but not enough to answer them." - Bill Flavell

General statements and presumptions on thing which does not exists "religion". Religion is intellectual category in real life there is no religion. There is only Catholic Church, Orthodox Churches, countless protestant and other pseudo-Christian denominations, Islam, Judaism, etc. The idea of religion in modern Religious studies is even more vague and general than that of for example "a vehicle". Shooting arguments on every side and putting it up together as an argument does not work. It has no intellectual weight whatsoever.

I love all these comments here, how all this is so brilliant and true. Right off the bat the thing's he says against religion are false. Religion is atleast in America the cause for our morals and civility. Also we use to be more respectable as people and more modest all stemming from religion. Yes there are bad apples and horrible things that happened from people who believe in god. But to say that's what the religion overall does to society is simply not true. And there's no evidence what so ever that if everyone overall in the society were all atheists, that there wouldn't be horrible people doing horrible thing's. All this is really so rediculious and brainwashing atheists to believe this about religion. I would say that's worse then the indoctrination atheists talk about that happens to kids from religious homes. Which for the record is not necessarily bad. That's also another lie atheists spread.

@Greg thats just pure ignorance. All moral values are religious values and there no such thing as a secular value

@Greg religion is the only safe guard we have from people to naturally behave as their animal selves. When people do behave like animals, religious or not, its irrelevant to religion being bad and proof on our own we by default will be bad without god

@Get Zappéd 1974 literally every moral thing is learned from religious teachings. There is no other source we as a society has gone go-to learn morality in the west and all judao/Christian societies, which share the same moral values and has spread civility throughout the world where it didnr exists before and only caused the world as a whole to cause people to becomes more civilized. All id this is literal facts of history. We use to be more barbaric and dangerous to each other overall. Youre really just regurgitating atheist talking points that is void of any history that we know to have caused the world to be a better place due to serving God and all agreeing on morals to serve God under which was more or less impossible to find worldwide as Christianity has spread it over the years through the world.

@Get Zappéd 1974 I described history what happened, those are the facts. If im wrong you should be able to tell me the real facts and show me how evil religion is that religion didn't do all that. And if you don't know maybe you should just say you don't know and get off your high horse, display some humility, it a good for you
