Come, come again," instruct lines of poetry attributed to Rumi, the 13th century Persian poet, "ours is not a caravan of despair." Here, during a special Rihla session recorded recently in Konya, Turkey, Hamza Yusuf emphasizes the expansiveness of the spirit demanded by Rumi. "Religion is here to unite us; it's not here to divide us," says Hamza Yusuf. "And if it's dividing us, it's not God's religion -- it's something else.

Only true iman moves a man to tears when he mentions Allah, this is not the first time I see hamza with tears in his eyes when he mentions god. This is Islam and not what we usually see around us.

What a inspiring movement: can't believe a man/this sheikh from US and his understanding of Islam while living amongst none believers, what a gentle soul. Perhaps some of the countries in Asia hopes to adopt his philosophical views and move forward in today's world and evolve instead, badger their old views to the world at large.. brother sheikh hamza yusuf my salaam to you with grace! Keep up the GOoD work..

The fascinating thing, is that people like this all around us. Not in another country or city, but all around us. We may not have met them yet, or we have, but haven't dug in the depth of their inner knowledge gifted by Allah. Sometimes we label them as, "too young", or "not have studied in Islamic University" or whatever it may be, yet, they were blessed in the most authentic of ways. Only if we gave them recognition, and seek the openness of heart from Allah, to be able to see these around us.

I am glad to hear him speak on unity. True Tawhid will show in the Unity of Ummah. Once we lose respect in our relationships, we lose our relationship. The Prophet taught the ummah to avoid fault-finding, to cover the faults of others, to say kind things or nothing at all.

I wish and greet you with an intention of peace: This is an incredible talk. I wish to attend the Rihla in Konya, subhan'Allah, sweetness. The point about the spiritual condition, the closing of the door, what a striking analogy. Dawah projects forever on the rise, how ironic, that so many doors are closed into already Muslims' begging faces. One step forward, two steps back. Masha'Allah, meaningful reflections. I cried with Hamza Yusuf, this chat was shared with me in great timing.JZK.Anastasia

The Ottoman's refined spiritual literacy was the product of over a century of cultural development in the Ottoman realm. Following the capture of Bursa in 1326 and the subsequent creation of a large Ottoman urban class, the unlettered Turkish nomads who migrated to the cities had been introduced to a more classical Islamic piety by Sufi poets of a didactic and orthodox tendency, who wrote in the vernacular so as to be understood. Among these masses, particularly influential were works such as the Mevlid of Süleyman Çelebi (d.1422), a great anthem for the birthday of the Prophet, which unlike most earlier attempts at creating a Turkish Islamic poetic tradition was much more than the mere translation of a Persian original. Prose works began to appear, chief among which is the Muzekki en-Nufûs of Esrefoglu Rumi of Iznik (d.1469). His declared intention of writing ‘in simple Turkish’ to attract support among ordinary people without a high Islamic education is also evident in his popular collection of mystical poems. Thanks to such literary proselytising, and under the sultans’ guidance and patronage, by the time Constantinople had been won for Islam in 1453 the Ottoman state and much of the urban population had committed itself definitively to the orthoprax Hanafi school of law, the orthodox Moturidi theology, and to a variety of Sufi tarikats. In the complex patterns of post-conquest Ottoman society, three hierarchies came to wield spiritual power over the populace and maintained a stable ascendancy which only began to be broken with the onset of Westernising reform in the mid-nineteenth century. Firstly, there was the ilmiyye (‘learned’) institution which provided the muftis, judges, schoolteachers and mosque imams for the empire Secondly, there was the self-financing but officially sanctioned network of guilds (esnaf). These, which evolved more complex forms in Ottoman society than elsewhere in the Islamic world, grew from informal fraternities of young men, often bachelors known as ahis, who subscribed to the canons known collectively as fütüvvet, a principle which may lie at the source of the chivalric ideal in the West. Mutually supportive, morally upright, and devoted to the ideal model of fütüvvet that was the caliph Ali (r.a.), these groups had by the fifteenth century evolved into formal guilds which probably included almost all urban craftsmen. The third spiritual hierarchy in Ottoman Turkey was provided by the Sufi orders (tarikats). Many dozens of these groups appear down the six centuries of Ottoman history; but for our purposes it will suffice to summarise two broad tendencies. The first is represented by the Sufi cults of the tribal hinterlands where the high Islamic teaching of the religious colleges (medreses) had not penetrated. These tarikats grew up around charismatic leaders who were prone to making dramatic claims to mahdistic or messianic status, and whose attitude to the orthodoxy preached by the ulema was, more often than not, somewhat contemptuous. An example was Barak Baba of Tokat, an early fourteenth century dervish whose appearance strongly recalled the Turcoman shamanistic patrimony. He wore only a red loincloth and a turban adorned with two buffalo horns. Wandering the streets with his similarly attired disciples, he would blow a horn, play a drum, and dance. While he beat soundly any of his followers who neglected the canonical prayers, he failed to keep the fast of Ramadan. His beliefs, apparently shared by many others, involved faith in reincarnation, and an extreme devotion to the caliph Ali

sanaulla sharief lol, if your intention is to discredit sufism, then other sufis have already rebuked any kind of so called "sufis" that have broken the rules of the sharia. Sufism, or Tasawwuf, or simply the excellence of the inner-self can only be practiced if all the rules of sharia are followed, including the Sunnah, no matter how small.

Rumi who is quoted in the description was not Persian, but Turkish and buried in Konya where he was teaching the Sufi or spiritual dimension of Islam, namely the Imân (faith) and Ihsân (Excellence). Sufism can be compared to the bone marrow where the red cells are generated and which bring nutrients and oxygen to all the body and allows it to grow. It is inside the bone, hidden from the sight and essential for the health and survival of the bone. Life comes from the inside to the outside and not the reverse. Take the bone marrow outside and you are left with a bone, died piece of matter that will slowly dry out and crumble away. Similarly, the dikr or remembrance thought in the Sufi way is feeding your spirit and enables you to go beyond the external appearances - clothes, beard, veil, letters - that divide and to plunge in the infinity of the spirit or real Life. May the Almighty guide you the a real spiritual guide who inherited the Light brought by the Prophet (pbuh) and prevent you from the many fake cheikh going in the open, amîn.

Anyone can be forgiven for anything, as long as its a sincere prayer for forgiveness. Just before the soul leaves your body, the door of forgiveness is not closed per the Quran. Just ask for forgiveness, and Allah is Rehman, and Rahim, HE has boundless mercy, HE says in the Quran, HIS Mercy exceeds HIS wrath in Islam.

For any well educated person, "Scholar" is a relative term! Who decides who is a scholar and who is not? Instead of treading blindly some "Scholars" in your own midst that you think are the best, open up; the world is enormous; has many scholars of equal and/or more excellence perhaps. Please have an open mind. Listen to people fully. Discuss, have tolerance for different views. God knows best, not any human being.
