This is one of the best bands Phil Lesh has ever assembled, but James Casey's contributions are on another level here. The vocals on Eyes Of The World. The seamless soprano sax interplay with the rest of the band. This is exceptional. Rest in peace, James Casey.

This was one of the best Phil & Friends shows I've seen. I feel like I've seen a lot, over a long period time, with many different musicians. This line up rules! I love having all 3 horn players but this was choice with Katie on the Violin. Dark Star> Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds> China Cat> Dark Star> Terrapin Station (refrain only) to close this set was... Transcendental!
@cloudstar845
@cloudstar845 Жыл бұрын
Also, I think the Terrapin refrain was a nod to the 3/18/77 GD show, being the only complete version of the Terrapin Suite ever played by the Grateful Dead.

I was born in ‘68 and saw a few shows with my brother in the Bay Area in the late 80’s. I wasn’t “on the bus” then but eventually, I got it. I always associate Eyes of the World with the early 70’s jazzy pop/rock that I kept hearing and committed to memory as a young boy.

Lucky I picked this one out of the current Capitol run to go see! I agree that this lineup is superb with a different dimension added by Katy Jacoby. I like the way they play the songs straight with plenty of solos -- though James Casey picked up his horn twice before he got to use it! -- but I especially like how Phil will arrange a few little tweaks to a melody sometimes; it shows how versatile the songs themselves can be. I am sad to have to report that the guy next to me in the bathroom after the show gave it a vocal 4 out of 10, saying basically that there were too many jams and they should have left the girl singers (plural) backstage. Not sure what his set of expectations is like, but I'm glad I don't share them. This particular pair of second set openers was killer (or should I say "fire" like the kid do) for me. Anytime I get "The Eleven" I am happy, but the entire second set, plus the versions of Peggy-O and They Love Each Other in the first set were top notch. Hard to ask for more than what they delivered. Just saw the ad for The Great South Bay Festival out on LI this summer. No tix yet, but I will be looking forward to that, even if it's different personnel.

@@donaldgehre5964 JRAD is short for Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Russo was the drummer in Further with Bob and Phil. Then he started JRAD as a one off project that has been so successful, they've been doing it ever since. They are worth checking out. They are all great musicians with jazz chops and they bring their own spin to playing improv Grateful Dead music. They are fairly high energy, kind of a cross between Phish and the Dead. Check them out on KZbin.

Thanks for the free stream. Who's Phil Lesh? Is he the one they never show? Such a good jam, I just wish they would show the guy for whom the band is named even half as much as everyone else. This is not to say I am not grateful for the free stream, thanks again.

It’s so wonderful thing that Phil Lesh is continuing to reach new folks all the time at age 83. For you neophytes. He is a classically trained musician originally in trumpet who took up bass at the request of Jerry Garcia in the mid sixties Almost 60 years later the rest is history and Phil is able to lead musicians young and old-Rock, Jazz, Folk, Country to play amazingly fresh versions of these songs. To learn. Orr about Phil read his biography “Searching for the Sound”
