In this video, I'll take you through the basic reloading process and show you what I do and share some of my thoughts for the .223 Remington round. Enjoy! The .223 is one of my personal favorite rounds. This is a lengthy video, so grab some popcorn! I made this video for people considering the adventure of reloading and I think it will be interesting to them...
Here's a list of some of the equipment that I used in this video:
Lee Reloader Single Stage Press

Lee autoprime shellholder set
Lee RGB .223 dies
Rcbs casemouth brush
Dillon DCL case lube
Dillon Super Swadge 600
Dillon case length gage

I asked a friend of mine who reloads to reload 50 rounds of 257wby mag ammo for me. He said "come on over and you can help and learn something new ". 2hrs later when we finished I realized how much time it took, I was so appreciative of his time that I bought my own reloading equipment and learned to do it myself. Very time consuming and I didnt have a clue what was involved ! That was 4 years ago. I will reload for a few others occasionally and always invite them over to "help". They usually go buy their own stuff after they see what goes on.

Here's a tip for those with kids or grandkids: Take 'em out shootin' and then have 'em scrounge for brass!!! I took my eight grandkids-ages 4 thru 16-taught 'em firearm safety and geared 'em up and we shot all types of guns, from several different 22LR's to 380's, 9mm, AR's, shotguns, M1 Carbines, then the FUN began!!! We made a game of who could pick up the most brass! Sure, I got a lot of aluminum and steel cases at first but they caught on real fast and I ended up with a bunch of reloadable brass!!! Got 'em trained now, too! A few of 'em went shootin' with my son (their Dad) and they sent vids of them collecting brass!!! It's like an Easter egg hunt only BETTER!!! Love your vids, by the way!

G&K Ol' School started teaching my kids like I learned at 2 years old. And now they are teenagers and young adults and are very responsible. I had a neighbor that tried to tell me 2 yo was too young. But i2 yo was when I started learning gun safety and about different firearms and ammo. His son and other kids that were around my kids had play with toy guns and the rules just like my kids. My kids and their friends have not used a weapon in anger ever. Not patting my own back I’m thankful for a Daddy Grandaddy and Papaw that thought me I’m just handing it all down. Teaching Gun safety should stop being taught and learned by me or anybody around me!

I am *brand new* to reloading. I have the full setup (mostly Lee products, with a Lee hand loader at the moment until I can get a work bench to mount a single stage and eventually progressive press...) At first, I thought your video was going to be long, a little drawn out, and it seemed a little "iffy" from many I have watched on reloading. But I watched it entirely, and I was *WAY* wrong... And *wow*. Thanks for the work on that. It was totally *great*... Good resolution, great focused and clear up close shots, and *very* detailed and informative. I especially enjoyed the attention to detail (I'm going to be reloading .223 and .45 to start off with). I enjoyed the several different ways you described how to do some of the processes. The military crimp removal tool (from Dillon) you have I liked, but right now to start, I'm using an RCBS case prep center crimp removal tool loaded into my drill until I can get a better setup. I was surprised to see you didn't show loading primers on the priming tray, but I can do with out that. That's pretty basic. And I enjoyed your bit on the headspace check tool, I think I have the same one, it's a Dillon. But I *do* wish you would have shown or added setting up a crimping die and crimping the .223 rounds, because that's what I was interested in seeing how you set that up in your press,as I am going to be overly cautious, and I am going to crimp my .223 rounds just for my own piece of mind. You explained every step of the process *very well* and in layman's terms. Thanks for the video! You earned a thumbs up and a subscription from me...

How you got 41 dislikes blows my mind. I thought you did an exceptional job on informing the public on what it takes to reload on a single stage press. I do like how you showed some tools a beginner can use instead of the costly upgrades you can purchase over time. Ive been saving my brass for years and dont own a press as of yet but definitely plan on it in the near future. If you can nab my attention for over an hour id say you did a job well done. Kudos and thanks for the helpful tips. It helps me narrow down my choices when it comes to purchasing a press, trim tool, gauges, scale, etc.

07slowbalt This video helped me when I was starting to reload, but there are number of things that I would not do that are actually not safe for you, like baking your brass where you cook your food or washing your brass in the kitchen sink, it's lead exposure - not good for you. As you know gun powder contains lead too, so as you dry your brass that's still black inside, that stuff is evaporating with water and getting deposited in the oven and in the air and then you put your food to cook there and you get contamination, not a good idea. Also what's the point of waiting for preheat if you're not actually cooking? LOL. I find that using the small oven that you can pick up in thrift store or garage sale works much better, you can set it to lower 150 degrees and all you need is 20 minutes including "preheat" for brass to dry. Also he mentions the vibrator cleaner is best thing you can have, actually no, not really, again the lead particles that get thrown in to the air as your brass is getting clean is not good idea. Wet tumbler is much better, as nothing escapes in to the air, plus you save the whole "washing" your brass step, just throws the dirty brass in to the tumbler and couple hours later it comes out looking like gold. The Lyman trimmer is probably slower than Lee trimmer, if you're going to do volume reloads, get WFT, Giraud or Trim it or Hendrix one, they all are much faster and some will also deburr and chamfer too as they trim. Also why show forever how you pick up brass?? Show 5 seconds and you get the picture, etc. Anyway, thumbs up for thorough explanation, but some parts could be cut out.

@DimaProk 9 жыл бұрын
07slowbalt I don't know if you bought your reloading equipment yet, but in my experience sometimes I bought cheaper stuff to save money, but later end up upgrading and if I just knew from the start I would actually save money by buying right equipment. Ok, presses, I own 4 Lees, started with hand one, then to 30 dollar bench one, it was not bad press, but depriming is badly designed and spent primers end up damaging my press. Next one I got is my favorite - Lee Challenger, very affordable, depriming is so much better and you can use quick bushing adapters that make changing dies a snap. I also bought Lee Classic turret, which is much heavier and the arm needs to be moved much lower to activate turret rotation, I am still deciding if I want to keep it. Next, trimmer, get a Lee one he uses it's not bad if you chuck it in to cordless drill or electric screwdriver, it's ok for bolt action shooting volume, but for AR get WFT, Giraud, Trim-it, Hendrix precision. It might seem like a lot to spend 75 - 150 dollars on a trimmer, but after you trim even 50 cases you really going to wish for something faster. Next I recommend a brass prep center like Lyman, it has 5 rotating heads and you can debur, chamfer, pocket clean/uniform and the best part I use exact same head for chamfering to ream out out military crimp or the pockets that just have really hard time seating primers. The money you would spend otherwise on that blue swagger are much better off spend on prep center. I've tried RCBS press mounted swagger - hated and returned it, I've tried RCBS head and it was good, but not needed. For priming first I bought Lee hand prime and later upgraded to RCBS universal hand primer, much better, although Lee has perfect primer tray, it flips each primer with one shake and when you close it, it doesn't flip them back unlike RCBS. For powder hopper I bought Lee and when I got it adjusted it worked really well, RCBS one is much more solid build, although it doesn't let me drain powder like Lee does, it's build much solid though from metal vs Lee plastic. I also have blue Frankford Arsenal tickler - very nice, but not as cool as Omega, also FA scale which I am not too happy about and it can be real pain and I use Lee dies.

When I'm on a brass hunt, I pick up EVERYTHING. Keep what I reload and recycle$ the rest. I find it's good exercise as well without thinking about exercising. Why do you dispose of brass that you can't use? I save all of my junk brass and once a year (around the holidays), I take it to a local metal recycler and score a lot of free cash. Typically, I gather around $300. I recycle spend primers, too. It all adds up.

Hi - I just want to make a comment about the bent case that you resized. Doing that really bothered me. To me, that case was questionable. I've been loading for many, many years and have many years of ordnance experience. If it was me, it's not worth taking a chance of reloading a "questionable" case. If in doubt, throw it out! There may be an unnoticed internal hairline crack, and when you combine cracks and extreme high pressures, it's a recipe for disaster. Yes you may get away with it for the most part, and you may save yourself a few cents, but ask yourself, is my life worth the price of one 25 cent damaged case? No, throw that one away and continue on. I hope you take this as constructive, and take heart that this advice just may save you or a loved one a disasterous, irreversible consequence.Your video was very well put together, and very informative and enjoyed watching it. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for the thorough and very informative video! I have a couple questions. I have some experience in pistol reloading, but am about to start my first round of rifle reloads with 223. 1 - I notice you didn't tumble a 2nd time to get rid of the case lube. Is that because of the Dillon Case Lube you used or is that just something you don't do? 2 - Isn't there a die that bells out the case mouth to accept the bullet? I thought I read somewhere about putting some case lube on the inside of the neck to help with that, but I'm not sure what that's about. What's your opinion of that? Again, thanks for the great video!

I have been reloading about 1year and the first caliber I started with was .223, had lots of problems! After watching your video and listening to you talk about being patient and not getting in a hurry, I slowed down and went back to the basics. Everything sorta fell into place. I have developed some awesome loads for my AR's thanks to your video. I still watch this video on loading .223. and still leaning something for it every time I watch it. You should be a teacher.

This a a great comprehensive video that takes all of the mystery out of loading ammunition. A friend introduced me to reloading on his Dillon 450 single caliber setup, reloading a bunch of .45 ACP. I started out with a Dillon RL550B progressive loader with manual indexing. I liked their NO B.S. warranty to fix any problems, forever, even if you were not the original owner, and bought used equipment. I also liked the versatility of the press to reload a huge variety of calibers. Since I had a .30-06, a .223, and a .45 ACP I started with those calibers. A friend had the Dillon XL 650 which auto indexes and feeds shells, but I prefer the individual hands on with the 550B. I liked the interchangeable tool heads so that I can set the dies and not disturb the settings to change calibers. When I got a 9 mm, I bought another tool head and dies for that. I have picked up 1000’s of pieces of range brass, including a ton of mil-crimp .223, which other people ignored because of the crimped primer. The Super Swage 600 takes care of the primer pocket crimps mass production style. Check out Jeff Bartlett’s GI Brass web store for new and recycled bullets, brass and powder. I picked up 2000 pieces of Lake City 1969 pulled down .30-06 for feed my Garand, along with 2000 147 gr FMJ M2 ball bullets as well. I have not bought a single round of commercial ammo, except for rim-fire, in 25 years. Try it, you’ll like it, and you won’t need a background check to buy a box of ammo.

Some tips: Cold water helps to rinse away suds. Put washed brass in blocks and run a strong steam of hot water on the open ends of the cases to help dislodge pesky dirt stuck inside. I’ve even rewashed brass after de-priming, if I’m concerned about any residual dirt clinging inside. Great video!

Thanks for this fantastic video. In my opinion the best learning vid for reloading on the net. The best is - i can understand you (i'm german). You speak slow and clear, that's good for me :-) Most vids just describe one step of the process or they use a multi press. Others are hard to understand (quick speech, slang). Or they just want to present their tools and don't tell the basics. I just started reloading and your tips and tricks helped me especially to prevent making mistakes that you showed. I work with "Lee Breach Lock CHALLENGER" single stage with O-frame - similar to yours. And i fill powder by hand. After watching your video, my priority goes to "check", "re-check" and "double-check" every step and every bullet. The last thing i have to buy is the tool to proove the finished round. Thanks again for this.
