Isaac Galvan, 23 was living paycheck-to-paycheck in Port Arthur, Texas but during the pandemic, he taught himself how to code and landed a remote job as a website developer making $12 per hour, about $22,000 per year.
His newfound flexibility allowed him to relocate to Querétaro, Mexico. In April 2021, he packed up his belongings and began his new life.
With only $3,000 saved up, he quickly found how far the U.S. dollar stretched abroad. Shortly after his move, he made down payment on a new car, signed a lease on an apartment and even saved a few hundred dollars a month.
“In leaving America, I felt like I was finally able to have the American dream,” he said, “I took part in this reverse migration so I could finally have a life of my own.”

But if you compare now- you’ll be amazed how many skyscrapers the country has erected in three years… Also, they’re building 21st century highways all over the country. Thanks for sharing your inspiring story! BTW, I recommend trying to pay down credit card debt as fast as possible after you have saved 3 months of expenses in an emergency fund. The 20%+ interest really works against you. Then you will be free to save and invest and it will grow faster!

The costs are just crazy. $250-300 a month for the cheap $8800 deductible plans that offer next to no benefit unless a catastrophic incident happens. Studios aren't even cheap in any non rural cities any more unless you live in crime heavy areas, which is at least doable.

the pandemic was a blessing for me. I am Mexican American, with dual citizenship, and my wife is American. We both are civil engineers. We moved to Spain in 2021, and are working remotely. I found out in Spain that they were giving Portuguese passports to Hispanics that could demonstrate having at least one Sephardic ancestor. I found I do have Jewish heritage, so I applied for the Portuguese passport that same year and I just got it a couple of weeks ago. Now I have 3 passports! God bless Mexico, America, Spain, Portugal and the internet.

As someone who moved to Mexico from Europe and have lived all over the world, I applaud Isaac. It first of all takes a lot of guts to move to another country. I was 20 when I first moved to another country. Now mid 30s. I think it is a smart move that he made. Queretaro is really nice and it is not so polluted and busy as Mexico City. I'm going to relocate from berlin to the south of italy next month, where I bought a house recently. living costs are insanely cheap on the italian countryside, the weather is better, beaches are absolutely stunning and people are much nicer. all in all I'm going to save so much money, which is almost impossible in berlin or any big city where rents and living costs are going up. making wise choices about money can also mean that your quality of life is improving.

Korea's another place where people are living the "American Dream." My favorite sandwich shop was owned by two Moroccan brothers. The first one started the shop with a Korean friend and made so much money that he was able to sponsor the other one's visa. They could afford to close one MONTH a year to go back to Morocco. The world is vast and wide. There are many places where opportunity exists!

​@Michelle I guess for some people it might be harder to get the skillset, but rn being a dev is still a promising career here in Mexico. Although sometimes I do wish I could just work for the US and earn more, but Mexican dev jobs still pay way more than your average job and you can live well with this career. Idk, at the end of the day stuff like this increases our HDI. So really, more than this being about an American earning better, it's about his career, he got a Mexican job after all, and there are more Mexicans with similar jobs. It's really the skillset, how it's easier to gain access to educational resources when you speak English, and how it's easier to get jobs in the tech field for English speakers that helped him.

@@ivy8483 It is a very stable job I currently live in Guadalajara and call tell you there is a lot of work here. Fairly easy to get a job since most companies compete with other companies for developers. A lot easier if you know English and can travel to the USA. The salaries are also very high compared to other office workers. I currently make around 50K USD a year, but that's on the high end, my ex-roommate got a remote job and moved back to our small hometown and is making around 36K USD a year.

@@ivy8483 I totally recommend to you doing that, if you are fluent in English you could work for American startups or companies, getting paid en USD and spend mexican pesos. After some 4 or 5 years of experience, you could easily get a salary that will put you into the 10% earners in Mexico

That is a very decent salary for Querétaro. I know someone who makes less than $750 per month there as an I.T. worker. I also know someone who works remotely for a Mexican company and prefers to live in the US with a Mexican wage 🤷‍♂️ It's all more than just money, people have to feel comfortable and sometimes that doesn't involve having the best purchasing power possible.

The US job market is super competitive, it would be much easier to land a job in Mexico, gain experience, then land a US job later down the road

Because it still does not pay him enough to live the independent lifestyle that he wants. Because that $10 to 15 meal he eats in a restaurant in Mexico will cost him 50 to 60 in San Antonio, because the $300 month apartment in Mexico will cost him over $1000 in San Antonio. Those quantitative and qualitative differences et up the higher salary and he finds greater fulfillment in Mexico, at least for the moment.
