Following the death of his father in 1997, Tumu Te Heuheu became the 8th appointed Ariki or paramount chief of Ngāti Tuwharetoa. Twice, The Listener included him on the list of the top 15 most influential New Zealanders.
But who is this quietly-spoken reluctant leader known affectionately as 'Chief'? Moana Maniapoto sits down for his first one-on-one interview.

Moana I can’t thank you enough for this and all your interviews on your excellent YT channel. As a non-Māori they allow me to learn something of Māori perspectives / concerns / matters of importance. And so form a bridge between my understanding / world view / thinking and that of Māori. I hope your channel is increasingly seen by (particularly) non-Māori over time. And ignorance, disharmony & racism in Aotearoa diminishes over time.

Nothing but sincere gratitude for your leadership, your vision for our people, your mentoring of many great leaders, your sacrifice of time, energy and life. For you are a true statesman and man of class Chief. Thank you for the way you supported both Mum and Dad; how they respected your wisdom and the man that continue to be. I too, hold that same deep regard for you. A very discerning and distinctive insight into our precious Ariki. Thank you.
