For those who know nothing about the life and ministry of Francis of Assisi, this is an excellent place to start. The documentary spans his initial encounter with Christ all the way to his death, in just under an hour. Indeed, it is a sketch with some nice insights provided by various commentators. I'm not partial to reenactments, and there are plenty here. I prefer seeing the places themselves, as well as the art of the time. As the documentary creators are only imagining what the visuals, I would prefer to be allowed to do the same; dramatizing these events without the depth that can occur in a film risks deflating the impact of the moment. This does happen here...I found myself looking away and listening to the words and enjoyed it much better. But there are beautiful countrysides, and plenty of other visuals which work quite well. In the end, this is a pleasant way to get an introduction to the work of Francis, and hopefully a desire to learn much more.

I went to Assisi several years ago. When St. Francis died he asked that no church be built for him. But over the years a huge church complex was built over his grave. I went down into the crypt to his tomb under the church. You can sit in contemplation there, and it was the most intense emotional spiritual experience I have ever felt. People were on their knees, others sobbing, overcome. I am not catholic or overly religious. I am an animal lover. In the little town, Francis' presence can be felt everywhere. St. Claire's lovely pink church at the other end of town is a compliment to Francis' huge memorial. Assisi is an experience everyone should have.

Blessed St. Francis of Assisi. I pray to him always, to help my animals here. I always need his help. I humbly bow to him. His humility attracts me to him and draws me nearer to him. I love everything he did. He needed help himself, but he never asked for any help. He suffered immensely with his own poor body health conditions. Never would he complain about them. He kept moving on. Preaching the word of the lord. I admire him very much. My mentor, my friend for life. Praise be to you St. Francis. I know you are with our Lord. Please pray for me if you have some time left.

Gregorian Hebrews 12:1 doesn't say that you should pray to them! Read Hebrews chapter 1 and 2, the same problem had the Jews with the angels. We can't consider them as Christ neither the saints. We can ask other humans to pray for us and this is biblical but we don't pray to these humans as meditators! Maccabees is in the old Catholic testament...but it doesn't exist in the Hebrew Bible! It's very clear to pray to the Father through Jesus, no need for any addition. I'm not a Catholic, I'm a follower of Christ (as Francis was). Everybody who is a follower of Christ is a saint. Read Paul's letters where he calls all saints. Ask God for discernment. I'll pray for you.

Andi my brother in Christ. Asking those whom passed away and are living in our Father's Kingdom in Heaven to pray for us is not idolatry. My father who is considered "Franciscan" a follower of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. By his own experiences and spiritual visions our Heavenly Father made it clear to him that he has the right to ask for guidance from St. Francis and anyone else who does works in the name our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. For they are with the Lord. So you see, our Heavenly Father made it clear and reveal to my father that it's okay to ask His saints for prayers and guidance. As a true follower of Christ one wouldn't just acknowledge Him, but also His family; God's people. It's okay if you don't see it that way now, but soon the Lord will tell you when you are ready in spirit. Just open your heart as our brother St. Francis and many others have done in this world through our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, and you too will see. You are in my prayers, and I hope that I am in yours too my brother. Peace be with you.

We are all called to be Holy and Saints.. what makes a Saint different from the common man or woman or person is that they lived their entire life struggling through various phases of their faith and convictions to emulate Christ and till the end , they kept their words and practice as Christians and not to judge or ostracized others who are different or not of their belief. Saints are people who do what is right , do what is important and not rely on institutionalized organisations or pastors to wield power but to spread the Gospel of Christ , to baptise them immediately once they have full faith in the harsh difficult and struggling path of enlightenment by carrying their crosses every day and every night and to trust the Lord. Saints are also individuals throughout history who did not follow the trends of society or their manners. Saint Francis of Assisi saw how the 5th Crusades were wrong and how many so-called Christian Soldiers were just psychopathic killers, murderers and thieves. There are historical records whereby the Latin Rite Western Roman Christianity literally murdered , raped , plundered and massacre Eastern Orthodox Christians , Muslims and pagans just because they look different or spoke Arabic , Aramaic and Greek.

I am still being wonderfully enthused by that book I purchased about a few months ago, titled, The Sacred History by Jonathan Black ! Having just read a chapter on this wonderful man of God, St Francis of Assisi, I decided to investigate whether there was a doccie on him, on You tube & was pleased to see quite a few. I found & focussed this one, which I have just watched in awe. There are so many people that God has used to further His word, both before & after our Lord Jesus Christ, that we often only give credence to those we already know of & whom various dogmatic leanings have narrowed our conscience to focus on. If you have the strength of your faith & believe as I do, that God has & continues to use many “honourable & Blessed people to further His word & teachings”, I think we also need to give thanks for these people whom many seem to just “brush under the carpet”. Remember that God still uses people in our times to further His teachings & even more so now, when people are losing their direction & failing in their faith. I seem to discover on a daily basis how generous, understanding, benevolent & forgiving our Saviour is towards us all. I also have it reaffirmed that His Grace is not only for those who are already “Saved”, but even more so, towards those who still need to be saved. How great God & ALL of His disciples are.... even those who have not been Afforded the courtesy of acknowledgment.

John Knottenbelt What do you mean "for those who are already saved"? THOSE WHO ARE SAVED ARE THOSE IN HEAVEN. NOBODY KNOWS IF YOU WILL BE SAVED IF YOU ARE STILL ALIVE HERE ON EARTH. ALL CATHOLIC KNOWS HE IS SAVED ONCE HE GOES TO HEAVEN. IF HE STILL LIVES ON EARTH HE IS NOT YET SAVE. SCRIPTURE SAYS "WITH FEAR AND TREMBLING WORK OUT YOUR SALVATION." Scripture did NOT say once you receive Jesus as your Saviour you are saved. Never saw that in Scripture. So Protestant do not deceive yourself. Your leaders are deceiving you.

Saint Francis of Assisi (Italian: San Francesco d'Assisi), born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, informally named as Francesco (1181/1182 - 3 October 1226), was an Italian Roman Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Pope Gregory IX canonised Francis on 16 July 1228. Along with Saint Catherine of Siena, he was designated Patron saint of Italy. He later became associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment, and it became customary for Catholic and Anglican churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of 4 October. In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusades. By this point, the Franciscan Order had grown to such an extent that its primitive organizational structure was no longer sufficient. He returned to Italy to organize the Order. Once his community was authorized by the Pope, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs. Francis is also known for his love of the Eucharist. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas live nativity scene. In 1224, he received the stigmata, during the apparition of Seraphic angels in a religious ecstasy, making him the first recorded person to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion. He died during the evening hours of 3 October 1226, while listening to a reading he had requested of Psalm 142 (141).

I’m disturbed it’s called a game.. what person does that.. very mean dangerous mentality. Jesus calls humans ashes to ashes dust to dust. Wheat and chaff also it’s analogy.. of who are you heading towards to become wheat or the chaff will become burnt by judgement day.. it’s yet a serious question message. I worry for others myself also .. it worrying Jesus you live He died horrible death to save your eternity as families with Him the Christ you cannot see with eyes is your neighbors everyone.. to love easier to understand The Jesus is within me. Harder for me to understand why people are so hard colder .. hurtful to wound anyone your hurting the Jesus Christ I think him or her and your own heart Jesus is jeolous For you. There is no need to be "Catholic" or anything else. Use th focus in your heart, to show you your way.. It is what is in your heart that is most important. If you find that you can live you life in a peace and serenity, then choose those elements which allow you to live consciously, and compassionately. There are a handful of people like St Francis, from whom you can take inspiration and how to progress. If you have the discipline to adhere to what you think is a good model for living, you are far ahead of anything organised religion can provide. St Francis ran into opposition from his order, from the Catholic church, but some factors changed--even him. He found what would work for him. It is said that we are all on a spiritual path--constantly unfolding and learning what we need to learn. When one places the focus in a particular area, that is what we find, change the focus, and what we find changes also, but inexorably, we progress on that spiritual path. Remember, it is a step at a time, it is not easy to change everything adn succeed, but if you consciously move in the direction you winch, eventually, it will work for you. If you look at the central theme of all the great religions, you will find it is compassion (unconditional love)--that is not easy, but it is possible to be an engine of compassion. You can follow compassion, practice it, until you can fill every moment with compassion. Bona Fortuna. .

I came across this and saw it is based on book by Donald Spoto..............forty five years ago, Donald Spoto was my professor in college. He was a horrible, contemptible person............cold, callous, cruel. AND he hated animals. He was so bad I was forced to quit the class and lose the credits. But it was impossible to endure him everyday. God protect innocent souls from Donald Spoto.

Words cannot capture the deep touch of St Francis life's message. He epitomed the great message of our Lord Jesus .His message of detachment from material wealth is so relevant to our times and will be so for all ages.Understanding and absorbing his message will go a long way in untangling from the clutches of desire for more- that so much corrupts the soul. St Francis prayer is a great message for contemplating our current attitudes.I am blessed to be a Catholic .May the spirit of Jesus - through the life of St Francis make the world a place of love ,peace and compassion.

" Saint Francis of Assisi lay on his deathbed. He was singing, and singing so loudly that the whole neighborhood was aware. Brother Elias, a pompous but prominent member of the Franciscan order, came close to Saint Francis and said, ‘Father, there are people standing in the street outside your window.’ Many had come. Fearing that the last moment of Francis’ life had come, many who loved him had gathered together around the house. Said this brother Elias, “I am afraid nothing we might do could prevent them from hearing you singing. The lack of restraint at so grave an hour might embarrass the order, Father. It might lower the esteem in which you yourself are so justly held. Perhaps in your extremity you have lost sight of your obligation to the many who have come to regard you as a saint. Would it not be more edifying for them if you would, er, die with more Christian dignity?” “Please excuse me, Brother,” Saint Francis said, “but I feel so much joy in my heart that I really can’t help myself. I must sing!” And he died singing. In the whole Christian history, he’s the only one who has died singing. Many Zen people have died singing, but they don’t belong to Christianity. He is the only Zen master amongst Christian saints. He didn’t care a bit about Christian dignity. Saint Francis of Assisi has a different vision - he is just ordinary. He says, “Please excuse me, Brother, but I feel so much joy in my heart that I really can’t help myself. I must sing!” In fact, it is not that Francis is singing, Francis has become the song. That’s why he cannot help, he cannot control. There is nobody left to control it. If the song is happening it is happening. It is not within control, it can’t be, because the controller has disappeared. The self, the ego, no more exists. Saint Francis does not exist as an individual. There is absolute silence inside. Out of that silence this song is born. What can Francis do? That’s why he says, “I can’t help it. I must sing!” And he died singing. And there can be no other better death. If you can die singing, that proves that you lived singing, that your life was a joy and death became the crescendo of it, the culmination. Saint Francis of Assisi is a Buddha. The characteristic of a Buddha is that he is ordinary, that he has no ideas about himself of how he should be, that he simply is spontaneous, that whatsoever happens, happens. He lives on the spur of the moment, that is his authenticity. You can call it his characteristic, but what kind of characteristic is this? It is simply that he has no character, he has no strait-jacket of a character around himself, he has no armor, he does not live from the past, that he does not know what Christian dignity is. He lives in the moment like a child."

What is this? A Marxist sociology review? He liked a good time, but he was not a libertine. St. Bonaventure said that he never lost his purity. He sought humility, but was not a reluctant saint. Sanctity was exactly what he sought. The love of Christ was what he sought. What was so awesome about him is how is desire for the love of God was so immense that his ascetcism, as intense as it was, had to keep up with the Divine Charity burning in his heart. His whole life is about conversion. He let God work freely and powerfully in him. He did nothing halfway or with reservation. God be praised for St. Francis of Assisi! Let us honor him for who he was!

Francis knew without the Cross, there is no road to heaven. This means no Grace without suffering. Francis realized in what balance suffering is weighed, before Grace can be distributed to men; that is labour/works must be heaped upon labour to plumb the depths of the Divine nature. Instead of good fortune, seek out troubles, illness and suffering. Francis became the fool of this world, he chose to be nothing, so Christ could bring to nothing what is now important. What is gained, patient endurance.
