I remember, towards the end of the 90's, me, a young Moroccan at the time, living in the little-known town of "Taza" in eastern Morocco. I often took the old train towards an other city "Oujda", where I continued my studies. The journey, lasting nearly 3 hours, traversed almost desert-like landscapes, familiar to my eyes. To stave off boredom, I would slip a Dire Straits cassette into my walkman and let their songs play: "Where do you think you're going", "you and your Friend", "Telegraph Road", "Sultans of swing"... But when "Brothers in Arms" started, I don't know how or why, time seemed to stand still. And now, after 25 years, when I listen to this song, all those images come flooding back, and I feel that same sensation. For me, nothing compares to this Masterpiece.

So many different wars then and now.
Terjemahan (Versi Singkat): Berikut adalah beberapa potongan lirik dan terjemahannya: These mist-covered mountains are a home now for me Gunung-gunung yang tertutup kabut ini sekarang adalah rumah bagiku But we have just one world, but we live in different ones Namun kita hanya memiliki satu dunia, tetapi kita hidup di dunia yang berbeda There’s so many different worlds, so many different suns Ada begitu banyak dunia yang berbeda, begitu banyak matahari yang berbeda But we’re brothers in arms Namun kita adalah saudara dalam senjata Makna lagu ini sangat kuat karena menggambarkan kesatuan manusia dalam menghadapi penderitaan, meskipun sering kali dibagi oleh perbedaan politik dan geografis.

I don't know if you could ever understand, the great music you made, and what for a 11 years old kid was in 1990 going to sleep with his walkman listening to this, in the darkness, with his eyes closed and the only company of the melody and feelings of this guitar... every night. That cassette was most of his universe. And now, at his 41 listening to it and still loving it. Only thank you.

Dani, I don't know where you live, where you are from, but I feel the same. I'm just 1 year older and Brother in arms was one of the two albums that I used to listen all the time when I was a child (the other was The Wall, Pink Floyd...) I always found this song so...calm, even I didn't understand the lyrics (I'm french) when I was 11 years old as you were. Probably, not understanding the lyrics made more simple to let my mind floating in the universe with the music... Greetings from France Brother in arms!

My Dad was a huge Dire Straits fan, he would play the albums over and over. We would go out for a pint and he would put Sultans on the jukebox about 10 times lol. I played Brothers in Arms at his funeral. It was a long time before I could listen to this song again, hits me hard. As a guitar player myself I always appreciated the genius of Knopfler, I grew to appreciate the music more later in life though. Dad never got to see them live, he would certainly have loved it.

I know exactly how you feel Rob. My father was a regular serviceman in the Royal Marine Band during WW2. He played tenor sax and violin. When not on musical duties he aimed the ships big guns (a good mathematician) and was also ship's tailor. He saw HMS Hood sunk by the Bismarck and lost many friends that day. But he got his revenge. He was a big gun aimer on HMS Norfolk and sunk the Bismarck with a little help from his Brother's in Arms. He also escorted many convoys to Murmansk, that was dangerous work but he survived WW2 unscathed and was present when the Japanese surrendered. He claimed to have visited every country in the world with a coastline except the american continent as being a regular he had a long career and took part in many goodwill visits around the world playing on shore at functions and receptions - his band was very good at Glenn Miller numbers. In later life he stil loved all kinds of music, his only stipulation was that modern bands should be able to play their instruments in his judgement. His favourites were Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison, he even appreciated the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. We remember our fathers fondly.

Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitars to ever walk this Earth in my opinion. He is a master at his craft of writing music and playing his guitar. He's a class act. I'm 55 years old and has been listening to him since he started with the Dire Straits in 1970s. There are a lot of versions of this song out on video. To me this is the best version he ever put out.
I'm sorry, but I disagree and don't believe that is the message at all. For those who have served (I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that you haven't), this is more of a "love letter" to the people to the left and right of you as you face the enemy. I know, from experience, that you will never be closer to anyone else in your entire life than you are to your brothers in arms. These are the people that you would give your life to save; to not let down. Yes, we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms, but that is not our choice.

I am a retired firefighter from USA. When I hear this song about the Brothers in Arms, I am reminded of my own Brothers in Arms in the Fire Service. I was from a department that had an exposure to some terrible cancer causing chemicals and most of my mentors and brothers in arms I served those years with are now deceased. In some cases I was on a shift of people that faced all the dangers and death and destruction and now I alone am left alive. He captures the feelings I have about my brothers and sisters, both those who are left behind and those who are gone. But I know the bonds that are forged in such circumstances, and that even though the brothers come from different worlds and many times they are very different kind of people, you know you share that bond of shared experience and trust that is created in time of danger and facing tragedy together.

I'll be 60 years old in two days time, I first saw Dire Straits live in 1979, last time I saw Mark in Concert was 2019 pre-covid. Hope to keep on seeing him for many years to come. Absolute musical genius.

Just how relevant are the lyrics to this song. I think a few world leaders would benefit from listening to this. Absolute masterpiece.

Some world leaders don't care about our brothers, but their own wealth. Which is exactly why those of us who care have to stay vigilant in trying times. Remain caring.

These lyrics are profound. The leaders of the world that are greedy and belligerent don't have the wisdom of Mark.

The so called "world leaders" are the cause of ALL the destruction and strife around the world! There are only a very small number that have strived to keep World Peace... and Trump is one of them. 😔 So of course they want to condem and destroy him. He's destroying peacefully what they have strived to create...VIOLENT WARS! Wars create great wealth for the greedy...always at the expense of...Our Brothers in Arms...and their Families. 😣

Abso-bloody-lutely. It takes the sting (no pun intended) out of getting old and getting all the usual age-related health issues. I love the music we grew up with ... starting with the Beatles (when I was too young to go to concerts) and every album I ever bought and every gig I ever went to in the 1970s and 80s.

What a beautiful song. I've just now heard it for the first time, after hearing a snippet on Instagram. The virtuosity of the guitar, the tastefully understated accompaniment, and Knopfler's voice had me in tears. As a 70-year-old bassist, I didn't think any music could do this to me anymore. I'm glad I was wrong.

I’ve been listening to this album for decades. This poignant, empathetic song on the album is a true masterpiece. Never tire of listening to Mark Knopfler play and sing.
