If ever there was an R.E.M. song that hit close to home it was this song. My grandmother happened to be a Don at Cambridge University most of her academic life and it was during a time when there weren't many women scientists let alone women geneticists. Naturally the university were always trying to undercut the funding for her research so she spent a good portion of her life fighting against the establishment to get the funding for her research. As a result of the way she was treated she suffered from depression for a good portion of her tenured life, much like the subject of this song and my mother never had a proper "female" upbringing as a result. She died when I was 12 but to this day I have great respect for my Grandmother given the adversity she faced as an academic in the 50's and 60's. I admire my mother for continuing to defy the norms of women and carry on the legacy of female scientists in our family. And this song proves how strenuous and difficult the path of academia really can be.

“I started...I juuuuuuuuuuuuuumped up” is maybe my favorite Stipe delivery. Every way he does it in this song. And one of my favorite all-time REM lyrics: “a lazy eye metaphor on the rocks” Brilliant stuff.

TBH too many R.E.M. fans shit all over post-Berry songs. But if you can't listen to this and not be moved...your heart needs a hug.

When I met Ken Stringfellow in March 2010 and he asked me what I did for a living, I answered him: "to paraphrase R.E.M., I am a sad professor!"

I bought this record the week before I was married in the late 90s. I was finishing my PhD at a huge midwestern university and teaching full time. On my wedding night, I played this song over and over, having realized I made a terrible mistake. Holy cow I hate this song.

If they had recorded the *Up* album in this manner (stylistically), it would have been more successful. (Also, if Berry was involved in the demos, which by all accounts he was, why didn't they give him songwriting credit?)

All the UP songs were far better live, resembling the muscularity of New Adventures. This is a helluva song.

yeah, actually it was. did you see the second unplugged show they did? that was shameful.

god, stipe's voice was crap for a while there, wasn't it? glad to see it's back.
@stbr6815 жыл бұрын
No offense to the others, but it really is Stipe who carries this song. His voice takes on such a dead quality, until it changes for the chorus. Beautiful, but in such an ugly way.
