I saw them at Clemson University way back in 86 or 87. I think 10,000 Maniacs opened for them. We missed the opening and left halfway through the concert to go back to dorm room to drink beer with our dates. Wish I could go back to that time. Clemson was only couple hours from Athens, and I never made the trip there to see the wonderful bands that came out of the area during the 80s. :(

I was an REM diehard in high school, but by the time this song came out I was in a terribly abusive relationship that left me homeless and pregnant. At that time, i had lost my love for music and the hope of a better life. It's been 7 years but in looking back, I have a wonderful son, I'm graduating college this weekend, and can finally find solace in music. I haven't watched this in years. I was lucky enough to have produced this with Peter Care directing. I grew up loving REMs music and was so incredibly happy and grateful to work on this. It was pure art. MS was super chill and we just got it done. He changed his clothes in a van, called his friends for the party scene. Each frame has a memory. I can't stress enough how special this experience was. LOVE LOVE LOVE watching this.

I was a first grader in elementary school, when my father showed this band, this song. When I got my first mobile phone, I asked him to download it for me. I listened to this song a lot, it was my ringtone also, even if I didn`t understand the lyrics, because I am Hungarian. Now, that 7 years have passed, and my dad left me, I found it again. Listen to Blow at High Dough, read some lyrics, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, 38 Years Old, New Orleans is Sinking (way before the disaster down there) whenever their music spreads, people become converts. Sadly, Gord Downie died of a brain tumour. This song literally summed up my feelings leaving New York back in 2005. Heart break and after 4 years living there and loving the city and the USA left heart broken and empty back to the uk. It took me years to get over that. This song aired I think when I left and I felt it was just for me. I broke down in tears.

To me this song is about New York in light of what happened on 9/11. Stipe is on a plane looking at the city, just like planes were over the city on 9/11. But Stipe gives two fingers to the people behind that by making a song about the wonder and brilliance of New York and what it stands for in terms of the free world.
