ENTER THE SURVIVAL HORROR
This video analyzes two of the biggest horror games of all time, Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2. Both games are equally revered as being some of the greatest games ever made, but in this modern day of remaking beloved titles, what does this mean for these two games? In this video, I discuss what makes these games special, as well as what makes the entire genre of survival horror special, and I analyze how to properly remake a beloved masterpiece without straying away from what made it so great, to begin with. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video!

I'm a fan of having 2 great versions of one great video game available to me. With the RE remakes, I get a new experience and a new reason to replay the original games. It's all great. And speaking of great, great video!

I agree! It was definitely fun seeing how Capcom remade everything in RE2, and thank you so much!! :)

You can play the original soundtracks in the remakes by adjusting the audio settings. There... the "heart and soul" of the original is retained in the remakes, which I've done in my playthroughs of RE2, RE3 and RE4 Remakes.

music is not enough, story characters, scenes, designs. These new remakes are the first time i started to htink " it doens't really feel like resident evil", something i never did even with re 5 6 7 and 8, or even umbrella chronicles

@@Sercroc well of course 5 is still resident evil, it’s more resident evil than 4 ever was. It resumed the jill, chris, wesker saga. regardless there’s nothing wrong with taking the new games in different directions, why would they want to create the exact same games twice. these remakes have created a new generation of Resident Evil fans and it’s great to see

i actually enjoyed how there’s no music sometimes. There’s something about the dead silence while roaming the halls, while hearing the sounds of zombie growls in the distance etc. It’s more realistic to real life. I am huge on realism in games. Real life doesn’t have musical scores playing out of nowhere while living your everyday life. I also agree as well with the soundtrack of re 2 original. It creates tense atmosphere. I feel what one game did well, the other compensated in different areas. Yea the remake lacks music, but the original also doesn’t have zombies bursting through doors, literally chasing you. Boarding up windows in the remake is another element added that adds to the survival horror feel.

unpopular opinion in silent hill 2 there is one thing I wanna see not a complete overhaul or a leave it as it is scenario the combat something that might make sense to those who read this comment is that silent hill 2's combat was bad in a good way by making the combat noticably clunky and hard to use it unintentionally made it so your begging for a creature to just die with the clunky mechanics instead of having that 1.2.3. and done scenario a lot of horror games now suffer through because remember silent hill always had 1 trait almost every main character in a silent hill game was an average joe lured into silent hill for a si they committed they don't have neccesary firearm knowledge or basic skill required to efficiently use one and silent hill 2's clunky combat makes that even more present what I want bloober team to absolutly do is represent that with a new face like making your reload speed really really bad making james forget to cock the gun making the gun jam frequently making james have trouble with magazine managment maybe even putting in an empty magazine on accident and most importantly making the aiming system slightly more painful than most games try to go for a good idea for this would be just not having a crosshair making you the player have to get used to where he shoots the gun as you play almost like he's getting better the more he uses them I think you get my point and if you read this THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate it :)

Well you guys can play the old games with the fuxed camera angles while the rest of us will play the modernized version where the camera is not stuck in one place.

I disagree that fixed camera angles aid in terrorizing the player. I played Dino Crisis, Resident Evil Remake, and Resident Evil 3 (OG), I even played a fair portion of the original Resident Evil 2. I was never scared, not even really put on edge. I actually found my restricted movement immersion breaking and annoying. What kept me around was reading lore documents, which helped me become enthralled with the stories. I much prefer over the shoulder because that is infinitely more immersive. So, while you have a right to your opinion, I don’t think you can objectively say that fixed camera angles scare the player, that’s a blanketed statement. You can’t apply this to everyone.
@QSoundProductions

Thank you for the comment! That’s just my opinion, I personally think it’s a solid way of maximizing horror since character limitation adds to the game being scary, ie: a single zombie is more of a challenge due to movement, and an over the shoulder perspective does heighten the tension since you are right in the face of danger rather than seeing your character in danger from afar.

@@QSoundProductions I understand that and I respect your opinion. Although, for my taste, I prefer OTS because I think it offers a more immersive, claustrophobic experience. I'm as close to feeling like Leon, Jill, Carlos, or Claire as possible without sacrificing that aspect of survival horror. The games I mentioned, I thoroughly enjoyed due to the richness in lore, but I did find myself getting annoyed, primarily with tank controls compared to fixed camera angles. I like having the freedom to move in various axises, although fixed camera angles make aiming incredibly difficult. If the enemy is off-frame, you don't even know if you're hitting it.

The tank controls + awkward camera angles were a creative tool to take away power from the protagonist, just like in a horror movie. They were supposed to suck. This was to distinguish them from action titles, which had powerful protagonists and conforming camera angles. The originals, played today, have a very unique character; they don't feel like every other modern TPP shooter. The new games in comparison feel incredibly generic. You liking that is 100% normal; it's what most people like. But for OP, a remake should be much more faithful to the originals, and preserve their unique signatures.

I’m willing to forgive the lack of ambiance but for me it was the characters with the exception of Ashley and Luis. Also personally I don’t like how the ganados don’t flinch sometimes it’s just annoying. There’s a lot more I don’t like but that’s one of the biggest issues for me.
@QSoundProductions

@@Fanatic.....1 I agree with your issues, stagger seems to be a big issue on enemies overall, if anything when playing the Mercenaries mode, it just feels so much better since enemies actually flinch lol, and Louis to me was a great upgrade but that’s about it, Krauser especially was a major downgrade, no offense to the actor just really miss his original voice.
