Great review. I just bought a Remarkable 2. I already own and use laptops, desktops, and an iPad. Your assessment was spot on. I have many writing projects that each require their own notebook - and filing - and searching. I much prefer a reflective screen, no distractions, and the feel of paper and pencil when writing. Your review of the Remarkable is what makes it more appropriate for what I do. For me, it's not one or the other; they complement each other.

The e-ink devices are compelling but generally perform too slow or have friction. It seems to me if you’re into the paper feel and writing moreover anything else you should get e-ink device. If multi purpose, speed and a Swiss Army knife device is what you’re after, it’s iPad and realise that you’ve got a glass screen with a Matt protector. I’ve been looking at supernote A6X to replace bullet journal then procrastinating because I’d like to have a PDF annotation too. Realistically, if the supernote replaces my bullet journal, I really ought to have the PDFs on my iPad separately or go A5X then I’m at the size my iPad is so why not use that...! Many of the e-ink devices do appear slow and clunky.

I own both a (oldish) iPad and a Boox Lumi. To be fair, I'm not looking for a "paper-like" feel necessarily; writing on the iPad suited me fine when I did it. However, looking into a light source gets tiring very quickly, which was my reason for choosing the Lumi. It has done the job, but to be honest the lack of responsiveness from the device does get old pretty quickly. And while I've gotten _used_ to the UI, I'm not in love with it; Boox has a loooong way to go before they get to Apple's level.

I have a Samsung tablet and just got an RM2. Why? There is no comparison between a computer like laptop, tablet and a paper like ink device. If you get a car you won't expect it to fly or swim, or an airplane to take you to the grocery store. I have laptop for heavy lifting digital work. A tablet for small tasks, getting and sending email, using Kindle etc. But rm2 is different I am writing intuitive notes, full of small drawings, brainstorming, and it is a companion note taker when I read either paper book or kindle. I have dozens of paper notebooks, and a pen cartridge is good for a week. For me rm2 is a winner, no more notebooks, expensive pen cartridges, and trees are staying alive too. I actually carrying only rm2 with me as I am mainly work from home anyway. Walk in the park, when some thoughts or solution pops in my mind rm2 is unbeatable. You need to know what is you flow, what is the most important for you. There is no one device that suits our needs, maybe in the future? A phone with display, keyboard connection, voice commands, true note taking abilities, art abilities, and ... Oh, wait we already have it (sort of) between our ears.

I have an iPad and love it. I use it for work daily and for home use daily too. But I was wrong to think it would enable me to stop using paper. Hi there! I am looking for an e reader that meets most of the following: I’m a masters student studying psychology, reading many academic journal papers. I am trying to make it easier to get my readings done in the fly: at an appointment, outside in the sun, in bed and even in the tub! Key things are: ease of getting academic papers to the reader, lightweight, and syncing. I also care about the ability to read in the sun, but it’s less pressing. I’m also an author, and have never used an e-writer. But I have horrible handwriting so I’m not even sure if it would work. I like the idea of less typing though. I’ve done a ton of research and still can’t decide! Any thoughts?
@KitBetts-Masters2 жыл бұрын
For academic reading I think that the full A4 size is pretty important! In which case your choice is the boox max line or the Papyr is the choice. For writers though, the supernote and the kobo elipsa are the best choice because the handwriting recognition and ability to start and continue word docs is A+. Interesting to watch this. I own a Remarkable and love it, but I don't teach with it. (Except behind the scenes.) The students at my school have a Microsoft Surface, so in my classes we work with OneNote. I encourage handwriting. As a teacher, I don't have a Surface! I was provided a laptop. But I use a wireless Wacom tablet to get the handwriting for my teaching, and it works quite well. For notetaking, I prefer paper, or maybe the Remarkable. The latter actually means I have less stuff to carry. I use it a lot, but it is too expensive for what it does. So I work with my students to use OneNote for their notes. Not ideal, but at least they can hand write their notes. In the science and math world, this is even more important.

If you turn the Remarkable off, or if it goes into sleep or power off automatically, can you set it up so that the last page you wrote on or read stays on the e-ink display? I bought a Boox Note Air 2 Plus, but whenever it went to sleep it switched to a generic "sleeping" page and if it powered completely off, it switched again to a "Power off" page. What I like about paper is that you can write on it, and it stays "on" forever without using any power. The most amazing capability of an e-ink display is that it takes no power to continue to display what was written on it. The Boox throws this capability away by erasing what you are writing or reading, and replacing it with inane generic very dark pages. I want to see what I wrote, until I don't any more. Note Air won't let do that; paper will.
@KitBetts-Masters2 жыл бұрын
Hello, I think you can change this in settings. I set mine to only turn off if I haven't used it for 24hrs! It wakes up where I left it every time!
@eddiegardner82322 жыл бұрын
@@KitBetts-Masters What I am referring to is that the physical property of an e-ink display panel is that it will retain its last image indefinitely, without power, if you don't change it. So, if the software simply left the last page you were viewing alone as it went to sleep, and from there into full power off, it would sit there not using any power and display the page you just wrote "forever", just like a piece of paper does. An LCD or OLED display can't do this; they require power to display anything. The e-ink display could show your notes, your organizer page, a calendar, your artwork... whatever you last did on the device, without draining your battery, They throw this unique capability away by switching to an inane "sleeping" or "Power off" page before shutting down. I think this is dumb, and fails to make use of this unique proper of the e-ink panel, which is also useful.

Hi! Great video! I am about to purchase a device that I can use for creating online teaching videos. I am a high school chemistry teacher but I also run a small business and a webshop on tutorials to prepare students for their final exam and med school entry. I need a device that is great for note taking - just like paper or whiteboard -, but I also need to record it. It should be screen shared onto a computer where it can be recorded (this is what I have been using with wacom bamboo until recently but it broke) or, the device itself records it. To top this off, m macbook is ver much outdated with an acient op system, so that is worth a replacement. I’m unsure what combo would be the best for me: buying a nice macbook upgrade combined with a remarkable to create the notes for the video, or buy an ipad which will also take care of the recording. In the first case I’m not sure how reliable remarkable connect is. In the second one, I still need a laptop, so with a high end ipad would end up spending too much. Or, a nice macbook and a simpler ipad combo? I’m interested in your opinion. Thank you!
@KitBetts-Masters9 ай бұрын
Personally I found the pen displays that I have used and reviewed, e.g. hiuon and xpen, (there's also Wacom and Xencelabs), to be best for recording screen annotations. You can set them as external screens for a MacBook and then record that screen. The iPad is fine for this, but make sure to use an external mic so you don't get the tapping sound on the screen! I think you'll get more vibrant videos recording the iPad or MacBook screens in this was than screen recording remarkable or other eink tablets, so I'd probably steer you in that direction. (Boox tablets do have built in screen recording, which would be nice though.)

I think if your reasons to purchase fall into one of these categories then defo, it's a good price! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJCvpJeLftV9osU

I don't like pencil and paper too scratchy so actually writing on ipad feels nicer..

Is there a colored device like rm?
@KitBetts-Masters2 жыл бұрын
Yeah a few now, most people seem underwhelmed by the colour eink screens. The only main stream one is the boox Nova colour, which is a smaller screen device.

Ever thought about buying a paper like screen protector for the iPad? It really makes a difference how it feels when you write.
@KitBetts-Masters3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did put one on in the end and it is an improvement. The other benefits of eink though mean I'm going to stick to eink for my notes and planning!

Could you do searches in your notes on the Rmk 1 or rmk2 ?
@KitBetts-Masters2 жыл бұрын
No, it only does convert to text and send to email.
@huziodaddy2 жыл бұрын
@@KitBetts-Masters thank you so much for your answers. Great video by the way. Pretty objective. But, if icannot search through the notes, and I can just put them in folders but still shuffle a 1000 pages, it becomes just an expensive weather resistant notebook 📓. How many of the classic paper ones can I buy and replace if they get wet or lost with 600$?

dealbreaker for remarkable is no color support otherwise a very good option.

@@KitBetts-Masters actually i am really getting so annoyed looking at just 1 color ... actually i am only looking to take notes , I dont need fancy stuff just high quality note taking and I like to write super high resolution like fineliner do .. and I want to write as small as possible. actually I want to do lots of mathematics... programming diagram ...sketching workflows etc ..but In a remarkable richfull colors ..so that its pops out.. with that said..I dont need to watch KZbin email or other non essential things ... so that is why I liked the idea of remarkable just only using for writing no distractions ..so it was such a bumper to find out no color support :( so now I have to move to kore expensive Samsung s7 or Apple... which I find unnecessary money throwing away just to take notes ..you may step lower in the line but you will deal with lower resolution products ...and I just want to heave that unique top notch experience when you use it not that cheap feeling if you know what I mean

@@confidential303 get the samsung tab s6 lite. I am getting that after reading reviews. I also decided not to go for the remarkable or Supernote because it has no colour support

Could you use apps like One Note from office ? On the remarkable?
@KitBetts-Masters2 жыл бұрын
No sorry. Boox is the one that can use 3rd party apps, including one note. More on that in a future video, but as it stands it's not a perfect optimisation!

Notifications are easy to deal with tho. Just turn on airplane mode to ignore them

For sure, it's a luxury just to buy one for that reason, but the note-taking experience is so good in the remarkable and other eink tablets!

They charge too much for iPads… and they charge WAY WAY WAYYYY too much for this as an e reader. I cannot for the life of me understand why ppl would pay this much for an ereader… there’s so many work arounds for iPad… paper like screen, blue light glasses or turn off notifications in settings, etc. I feel like anyone who pays this much for an ereader, is either anti apple, or has too much money and they don’t know what to do with it. I’m not anti ereader. I bought one during lock downs. I bring it with me to the park on bright days and have bought both my kids inexpensive basic ereaders because the draw of apps/games they would rather be doing. But the main thing here is that it’s cheap ereaders. They also have iPad mini’s. We do Quizlet, Goodnotes, etc. Dont be brainless and buy something like this for this price smh.
