The Internet’s version of the Super Crown having the ability to transform anyone and anything into a cute, charismatic princess waifu was extremely chaotic and overwhelming in terms of fan art, but I would be lying to myself if I said that it wasn’t fun at the same time. I also jumped on the Super Crown bandwagon myself and tried to come up with my own gijinka designs with it. It posed as a very good opportunity to draw human forms for an artist who usually doesn’t draw humans nor human-like forms all that much like myself. Even to this day, I still think about using the Super Crown as inspiration again so I can come up with something cute and Princess-y. I’d rather compare the Super Crown to the Golden Apple of Discord from that one mythological story involving Eris, the goddess of chaos. Nintendo threw that crown in their community and it caused so much chaos as a result.

I think what makes Bowsette so popular is the beautiful idea factor of it. The idea of a species' princess is hard to not imagine. Admittedly, there are those who don't like Peachette (and NSMBU DX in general), but to see such creativity is appreciated. Also, Nintendo makes a wise choice in staying away from the matter. Meme acknowledging companies are more likely to not know the meme in particular, and banking on it isn't always a good idea. Remember Morbius.

Another fan character that came around the same time as Bowsette but wasn't nearly as popular, was Eggette/Omelette, Robotnik's niece inspired by Eggman's upside down sprite from Sonic Mania. Perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of the Bowsette thing, was the look into the cultural differences between Japan at the West. Both came up with the concept of "Hey, wait a minute! If the crown can turn Toadette into a human girl, what would happen if someone else wore it..?" But while the West went for Bowser, which would assumingly result in someone more powerful and sexually-aggressive, Japan went for Boo, to get someone more shy and demure. It was a fascinating insight into the cultural values between these two regions of the world.

Okay, so, when this was catching the Internet's attention five years ago I had a good chuckle like everyone else, but then I remember seeing in old Nintendo concepts that Nintendo wanted a sort of "Anti-Peach", if you will, similar to how Mario and Luigi have Wario and Waluigi and I thought, "Well damn, there's their Evil Princess design right there." Honestly, if Nintendo ever wanted to pull the trigger on that idea I still think it would work.

I'm trans and I was just glad that, for a time, there were a bunch of people who were happy and celebratory about the idea of a transgender character. Even though I knew that most never thought about it that way.

I think that the reason why the majority didn’t view Bowsette as a transgender character was because the concept of taking a pre-existing character or object and turning them into either an anime girl or boy (but mostly anime girls), regardless of the pre-existing character or object’s canonical gender, has existed for a long time. It’s actually called “Moeanthropormorphism” where you take literally anything or anyone and reimagine them as a cute anime girl. Bowsette never invented the concept, but only popularized it to new heights. But I understand why some would view Bowsette as trans though.
