I am in my 80’s. I grew up in an NE industrial city. All the neighbors were Northern European immigrants. I remember the rag man coming down the street in a horse drawn wagon. He sharpened knives and scissors on a pedal driven stone wheel. He also fixed pots and pans that had holes in them. He would call out, “rags, rags, rags” as he went through the neighborhood. Most people had a smokehouse and chickens in the backyard. We’re talking about in the city. Most houses had summer kitchens for canning and dressing game. In winter we had feather beds for warmth. It was normal. Can you image that today. Kids today would run screaming to there safe rooms.
@kristiecox735010 ай бұрын
Ok, yours are very interesting. I’m going to ask my 92 year old mother-in-law about this rag man 😉 I remember those feather beds actually when I visited grandma. I forgot about those.

Since we're skipping down memory lane, my childhood was great for the most part. Getting up early Sat morn to watch cartoons, then going outside and playing all day. Hunting bugs, catching crawdads in lakes and creeks. Raiding my dad's tacklebox for hooks to catch bluegills. Yes, those were the days.

My Western Flyer 24” bicycle, my first Daisy BB gun (still have it today, my Grandson shoots cans with that gun) and my first basketball all came from the Western Auto.

Individual yoghurt contains with reusable lids. Mom would use them as Tupperware containers and the lids would fit on canning jars held on by the rings, good for dry storage. Save the sealing parts for actual canning, which you could use a couple of times before they failed. Using wax during canning.

My uncle used to make 'horses' for us... a piece of scrap wood with a hole drilled - a piece of baling twine through the hole - that was our reins. I rode mine everywhere. He also made stilts from scrap wood with a block of wood nailed to it and a piece of wood on top for our feet to stand on. He made various heights. Quaker Oats boxes with string I used as stilts, holding the string to lift with each step until my little feet crushed the tops. The ice man and the rag man... a man coming to our door once a week to collect the $24 for rent.
