As a Kiwi I personally had to laugh at the notion of the old mermaid kingdom in the waters off New Zealand -- if that's the case, why do the mermaids sound more like Californians? I feel like this movie was partly the result of the producers not doing their research and thinking Australia was a Pacific nation like Hawaii. I can see the writers' room being like "Hmm, poi is a Pacific dish, Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, Australia's also in the Pacific. Australia is a Pacific nation."
