With the Freedom Tower in sight, we mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. Just as the Museum is committed to the global responsibility to never forget the Holocaust, as a New York institution located in lower Manhattan we also will never forget the tragedy of 9/11.
The Museum opened in 1997, four years before the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Frank Camporeale, who recently retired, worked at MJH from the very beginning as an Engineer, and was at the Museum on September 11th, 2001. Frank recounts his memories of that day - how he secured the vents from dust and debris to protect our Museum’s collection, and how he worked to ensure the building was safe to reopen less than a month after the attacks.
As the title of our Museum makes clear, we are a “living memorial.” Hearing stories such as Frank’s reminds us of the vitality of history - that memories live on and shape who we are today.
May the memories of those who were killed in the 9/11 attacks and as a result of them be a blessing.
You can read more about Frank’s experience in a blog post at mjhnyc.org/9-11.
