Just saw this, a beautiful song sung by a beautiful voice by a beautiful lady, my favourite love song. I'll never ever forget Aberfan living only a few miles from there when this happened. My father went there to help dig those poor souls out after he'd finished a night shift at the nearby Hoover factory. RIP. XX

It's difficult to write with tears streaming down my face after listening to such a beautiful rendition of "Myfanwy". The tears are twofold, my mother's name was Myfanwy, born Myfanwy Roberts, and the other is the terrible loss of those 116 children and 28 adults. The mine owners knew not to build a mine spoil tip on top of a spring, but they were driven by money. It was built in contravention of the NCB's official procedures, the tip was partly based on ground from which water springs emerged. That, is the true horror of it all.

I was a Derbyshire miner during this tragic day. I have never seen as many grown men openly in tears before or since. It still brings me to tears. God bless the poor souls who lost their lives, the relatives who have lost loved ones, and those emergency workers who had the task of recovering the bodies.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I was eighteen years old and working in a coal mine at the time this horrific event happened I cried unconsolably, i just listened to this wonderful nurse singing and it all came back to me I have never cried since then but once more tears came pouring from my eyes, I feel guilty for not helping even though it came over the news not to go to Aberfan because there were thousands of people there already.

@@PatrickKelly-lz3pv @Patrick Kelly my word's may seem nonsensical and certainly you will have heard it many times but although you clearly do, you should not feel such guilt Patrick. I too carry a guilt from my own service . It took years of intense therapy to realise there was "absolutely nothing" I could have done that would have altered the outcome. I hope this does not sound patronising. Many things in life are simply beyond our control. I know my words will not ease your suffering. But please know I genuinely understand and care. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering of that day and still today. Although I was not born it breaks my heart. I am not great at words but I do understand.

She sings it with such heartfelt feeling and splendid intonation, she never fails to bring a lump to my throat. So very well done! I was 8, the same age as many of the Aberfan children, at the time of the tragedy and can remember my teacher telling us about it all and asking us to pray for the victims. My school was at Siggiewi, a little country village in Malta, far away from Aberfan, but our hearts were with those who perished. Thank you for this video and again, well done to the lady singer.

The Aberfan disaster was one of the first news stories I can remember from when I was a child and I still remember the terrible day and i still cry for the children, the teachers the parents and the relatives. And it should never have happened, it could and should have been prevented.
@NorfolkEnchants7 жыл бұрын
There were a few programmes aired on BBC Wales last year for the anniversary, one of which focused on what happened before and after the disaster and it became apparent that local people had been telling the coal board for years that they were concerned about the slag heap and feared something like this might happen if it wasn't addressed but since that would have cost money the coal board ignored them and everything continued on as usual. It's so sad but watching the programmes and learning about how easily this could have been prevented makes me so mad because yes, on the one hand we can say that we 'learned' from this tragedy but it took the lives of so many for the coal board to 'learn' something which they should have already known in the first place. And whilst the men and women of the village and surrounding areas spent their time trying desperately to save any lives that they could the coal board sat around coming up with excuses, they should never be forgiven for what they did.
@johnboyle32976 жыл бұрын
atheling1066 same here I remember seeing it on the news many years later I had occasion to drive through Aberfan and felt a great silence realising that virtually a whole generation was gone, our generation, only ever encountered that kind of silence one other time and that was Auschwitz. Whilst many of my pals remember 1966 solely for England’s great victory in the World Cup for me 66 will always bring Aberfan for most to my mind.

Having been born in South Wales (Bridgend) a twin (to a brother named Andrew who, sadly died only hours old) This fabulous tribute brought me to tears, floods of tears. My Grandfather was called to assist at the disaster as he was in what was then known as the St John's Ambulance Brigade. It affected him deeply for the rest of his life and what made it even more tragic was when the men folk went to collect their jackets from where they had just dropped them to the ground (so they could get to the teachers and children buried under the slag) Grampy Dawe told us that many of their pockets had been pick pocketed. All four of his boys worked down the mines in their early years that was simply the way it was. Few other jobs were available in the village. My Welsh family rarely spoke Welsh when we returned each year for a holiday as it had been made a crime to speak it when the language was banned by Henry the eighth. So it kind of fizzled out down the generations. However when I heard them speak Welsh occasionally in my Great Grandmother's and Grandmothers home I silently cried with its beauty. Something stirred in me, even at the age of three. As my mother was English, our family went back to her home in the Cotswolds. Not because she was homesick, but because she lost all her hair (which she could sit on, it was so long) lt was because she worried from the second Da left the house until the second he came home for fear the siren might sound which informed our small village that there had been one or more of the mine shafts had collapsed, exploded or flooded and all the women would rush to the scene to see if their loved ones were dead or alive. Welsh was never spoken in our home as we would not have been accepted in the community in Stow-on-the-wold, l even had to stop calling him Da, because l was teased so much. But his Welsh accent never left him. This led me to learn and sing the old Welsh lullaby So-gan (at 56 yrs young) at his funeral as a tribute to him and his family and the many many people who worked and died as a result of the coal mining industry, and especially those children and Adult's who died in Abervan. I am now learning Welsh, all be it very slowly. I feel l owe it to them somehow. Angela Cairns ne Dawe.
