Talked with Coach Knight after Indiana beat Wisconsin in Madison. He schooled kids asking for autographs, lifted the spirits of the aunt of one of his current players, and finally told me how excited he was to help a former point guard Jimmy Wisman find a job in Chicago. Knight was a teacher and an inspiration to many. He used his gift from God to the fullest!

And the stories about who he was off the court are even better. It's funny how you hear former players say that he was demanding but not mean or cruel in practice. He just expected a high standard which he should if the school is paying for your education and you represent it. I could read the story of Landon Turner again and again. Former player of Knight's who he rode hard because he would party all week instead of focusing on basketball and frustrated Coach Knight to no end because he "couldn't think past tomorrow" and Coach thought he'd be a top five NBA draft pick if he applied himself. Turner was paralyzed in a car accident in 1981 and Coach left a fishing trip to be with Turner and his family and stayed with Turner for most of the four months he was hospitalized recovering. Knight also organized a fundraiser that raised $400,000 to pay for Turner's medical bills and became a father figure to him. Best part though was when Knight's good friend Red Auerbach who Knight was selling Turner on with the Celtics drafted him with the last pick in the 1982 NBA draft as a symbolic gesture. Just class all around.

A basketball team that executes effectively will always beat one who doesn't that has more talent. That's the beauty of the game and why Coach Knight was so successful. He stressed the little details that so often go overlooked fundamentally. Same with the name on the front of your jersey is what counts - not the name on the back. Icon, legend, GOAT - all these terms apply simultaneously to Coach. RIP - there will never be another. Thank you for everything you did for basketball.

I remember watching his show on Sundays with the late Chuck Marlowe. He taught me things about the fundamentals of the game. I would go outside and practice what he taught after the show. I remember watching him explain how to do the chest pass and bounce pass. I still to this day at the age of 63 remember going outside and practice passing the basketball, always making sure my thumbs were pointing down after I released the ball just like Coach Knight had taught me. What an amazing coach. A huge part of Indiana basketball died yesterday. Thank you Coach Knight for everything you did for the game, for the state of Indiana, and for this 63 year old little boy growing up. Words just aren't enough..

Coach. The General. Legend. Thank you, Coach Knight for everything that you did for Indiana basketball. 3 banners, should have been 4, but TV Ted Valentine and his whistle in 1992 wouldn't allow it. Coach Knight ran a clean program (no major NCAA violations) in an era before social media when it would have been much easier to get away with them. A great Coach, an even better man. As a kid that grew up in Indiana in the 70's I can tell you we knew this all along. Every father wanted his kid to play for Bobby Knight. He didn't need 3 future NBA players on the team to win a championship. He just turned them into a well oiled machine as they progressed through the program. Advance a couple decades to the 90's and the man-to-man defense that he loved and the lack of a run and gun offense that capitalized on the 3 that was starting to become the new way along with the one and done and Bobby became a little less relevant. That fact and the fact that parents were creating cupcakes for kids that had no chance of holding up to the pressure of perfection on the court and actually making good grades in class that Knight demanded started the downhill trend for Coach and college basketball.

I was there when it all started ... my first year as a student in Bloomington was Knight's 2nd year as coach ... I was a gym rat and I played pickup games with guys from that undefeated '76 team ... I knew a few players who also told me stories about Knight ... Having said that, CBS should have booked an interview with ME because the eulogies I've heard in the past 24 have all been mush ...

Wooden and Knight are both in the GOAT discussion. They had vastly different management styles. They also butted-heads. Both were brilliant teachers w/ 2 key ingredients: knowledge and honesty

HBO did a comprehensive special on John Wooden. He started coaching at UCLA, l believe in 1947. Seventeen years later he won his first national championship. Wooden's winning streak of national championships just happened to coincide with the arrival of San Gilbert a very wealthy booster who did whatever it took to get great players to come to UCLA. After Wooden left the UCLA program was put on probation. Bob Knight arrived at Indiana in 1971 l believe. Within a few years he had Indiana in the final 4. By 1976 only 5 years in Knight won the national championship with his team that went undefeated, the last team to do so in college basketball. Knight won 3 national championships and 11 big ten titles without ever having a recruiting violation. I think that Knight is a better coach than Wooden for this reason. Knight obviously would have won with the players Wooden had. But it would be very hard to say that Wooden would have won with the players that Knight had. For his first 17 years Wooden had the kind of players Knight had and Wooden couldn't win until Sam Gilbert showed up and all of the sudden you had some of greatest players in the history of college basketball landing at UCLA. Remember it took Wooden 17 years to win a national championship and this only happened after Sam Gilbert appeared on the scene.

Will definitely miss him he was the standard for coaches and was a great teacher of the game and had very high IQ for the game look what he said about Michael Jordan before he played In the NBA and his graduation rate at Indiana and no NCAA violations I loved the big ten back in those days being from Milwaukee and routing for the Wisconsin Badgers the big ten was loaded with talent and was so competitive. My High School Basketball Coach was similar in coaching style and Philosophy. The most impactful things I learn that have been useful for me in the last 20 years after High school are : 1) learning to put the needs of the team 1st. Teammates 2nd. Self third and be happy doing it. 2) Preparation and Practice 3) Self Pride in effort and doing your best. If you come up short in your quest it's OK has along has you gave it your best effort. Overcoming the fear of losing or looking bad and trying new things.

The great controversial, Hall of Fame coach, Bob Knight passes away. I always liked Bob Knight, but he did some things I hated. Like the "whip" incident. But my favorite player, Isaiah Lord Thomas, played for him & held him in high regard...that was enough for me. Coach Knight teams were always prepared & played tough. That's what I would like remember about the Hall of Fame coach.

Was one of several reporters who interviewed coach Knight the year they won a national title, 1987. It was in Cincinnati and they beat Duke, which I believe had Danny Ferry, and LSU, which had Nikita Wilson. It was the scenario where Coach banged his fist on the table and the phone flew up. Got a good photo of Steve Alford cutting down the net. I was two years out of college (Ohio University). Coach Knight gave Curry Kirkpatrick of Sports Illustrated a nod when he was on his way to the podium. I never realized how tall coach Knight was. Sad to see him leave this earth.

I am under the The legacy of the James Naismith Coaching Tree!! Yes I can trace my roots from Naismith to Phog Allen to Dean Smith to Larry Brown to Doug Moe to David Moe and Jeff Linder and then Me. Yes!! Having worked under Jeff and David at the same time in D2. Bob Knight was a guy I grew up wanting to be like Both him and Bill Parcells are guys I always wanted to be like. Coach K who was under him at Army, Coach K coached on the 88 and 87 Olympic team and pan am squads and my almnus Ron Slaymaker was coach K's asst on the 87 squad. Yes!! I have a long history of this game. And learned alot thank s to Slaymaker. Bob Knight did more for the game than people think. Slaymaker and Moe both told me that as a coach make sure your kids graduate and make sure your kids have class as citizens . They learned that about Bob Knight. Knight always made sure his kids went to Class carried themselves well while in school and did well for themselves. I absolutely love Bob Knights teaching

bardo had it way wrong on the indiana run to the championship in 1987, their lowest point total in that tournament was 74, the final game against syracuse, prolly the worst 40 minute game they had in that 6 game stretch..in the 2nd round game against auburn they scored a season high 107

Bob Knight and John Thompson, the HOF coach at Georgetown, came to be good friends and coached against each other twice (1-1). In one of those games, Big John walked down the sideline and lit into one of his players with profanity that may have even made The General blush. As he passed by Knight, Thompson muttered under his breath "Bet you never heard THAT combination (of words) before!"

I'm originally from Columbus and I appreciated the Big Ten Network showing Bobby Knight's interview with "the dean of central Ohio sportscasters, Jimmy Crum" during the 1960 national championship run. I like thinking of how, as a player under the great Fred Taylor, Bobby Knight would watch football practice with Woody Hayes. It's a shame they didn't mention that in this broadcast. Of course, I realize that they only had one hour. And, now, all four of my all-time favorite Big Ten head coaches have died, all with Ohio State connections: 1. Woody Hayes. 2. Earle Bruce. 3. (Dare I say) Bo Schembechler. (Woody and he remained friends, and that's enough for me.) 4. Bobby Knight. It's a testimony that Bobby Knight is the only basketball coach on that list. It's a testimony also to Woody Hayes that-in a manner of speaking-Earle Bruce, Bo Schembechler and Bobby Knight all came from his coaching tree. This is quite a loss to "this great university of ours", as Coach Hayes said in his 1986 commencement address. It's interesting to note that, although I never had the opportunity to meet Bobby Knight, yet in my family we always called him "Uncle Bobby", such was the respect we had for him.

He admitted he failed to understand that Bird came from a very poor background and was very insecure about having no money and not used to a big campus enviroment like Bloomington. Bob Knight was an innovator regarding how long a Big Ten School can coverup the antics of a horrible person. Let's be honest, this guy was a fkn bully ...he may have been a good coach, but his bullying tactics and the way he treated people was fkd up. He made a player walk home from the airport in the winter ..that's abuse..and Big Ten is celebrating this bully....smh

Coach K players are very disciplined yet he didn't bully his players....and I would agree,people or players today could use some old skool discipline, but Bobby was a bully. Explain him bullying the AD , Members of the media etc...... and making Steve Alford walk home from the airport in the winter....that's called being a fkn bully.... gtfoh

The player in question was Steve Alford, and I have to believe that Bob Knight told the bus driver to give him a lift home, but not tell Alford that he (Knight) told the driver to do that. Bob Knight was a bully and a control freak, a yeller and a screamer, a coach that wanted complete control with no one getting between him and his players. I can understand that.

@@jamalammar9745 I can't explain it. And I'm not excusing it. He wasn't perfect. But he gave his time to helping former players with medical problems, teaching classes at IU (unpaid), giving back to the community, other charitable works, etc. That's not mentioned in many of the comments that I'm reading. I have more respect for Bob Knight than some of the slimy, two-faced coaches over the years that spoke of doing the right thing for their players, those so-called student-athletes, yet sat by and allowed them to take money under the table and skip classes. As for the incident with Alford and making him walk home from the airport in the winter, don't believe that for a second. Knight TOLD the driver to make sure he got a ride home. Think about it: If something had happened to Steve Alford on the way home - a mugging, beaten up, possibly killed, etc.,, then Bob Knight's coaching career would have been finished at that point. Done. Give him credit for that at least. He wasn't a stupid man; in fact, he was extremely bright.

He was a controjl freak and a bully and an abuser. A lot to celebrate. He ruled the Bloomongton campus with an iron fist and eventually pushed everyone to the limit enough to ger fired. Wins are not everything, you have to learn how to lose in life without exploding.

Wow, you obviously know very little about the man. I am blown away by someone like you that comes on here to speak ill of a man that has done so much for the sport. He was preparing young men for life. You should read about what he did for Landon Turner. Google it. Then you might think twice before going online and spewing your hateful rhetoric about him.
