Today marks 79 years since Operation Overlord. This was an amphibious and airborne invasion of occupied France in an attempt to liberate the country from its German occupiers. This battle would help the Allies gain a precious foothold in France, and would pave the way for months of hard fighting as the Allies pushed towards Germany. D-Day is considered to be one of the most crucial battles of WWII in Europe, and is often known for its high casualty rates. Today, we remember the many brave veterans, both alive and dead, who selflessly put their lives on the line for the benefit of democracy, the freedom and safety of their loved ones, and the lives of their fellow troops.

I mean, youre a wermach soldier, on the beach, youre thinking of your sweetheart back home in berlin, and a sea of americans falls down upon you, you do as a soldier does, you defeat the enemy. I would fight like hell if i saw that or i would curl up into a ball from a loss of humanity, idk, bith sides needs to be heard and lifted up, the standard jerry and standard G.I joe are the same, pawns in a big game.

Facts im an American but the truth is Germany didn’t start ww1 but were punished the most. America and Great Britain took territory that was of Germany and put them in massive debt & even now people are somewhat suspicious of Jewish people and the US government pledged to help them take back Palestine. And Israel is one of the main flags posted at the UN. Sometimes I think Hitler was onto something

@@wrath-2187Have you ever watched Band of Brothers? There’s a scene were some U.S. soldiers are kind of heckling some German POWs and one says “Where you from, son?” The German soldier says “Oklahoma” where the U.S. soldier is also from which leads to conversation about home and how his family “answered the call for Germans to return home”. Always broke my soul to think of how many that was true for.

I worked with an elderly German lady in the 80's. Her late husband was a German soldier who deserted the German army and they, with their baby daughter, escaped Germany and came to America. She had lots of black and white photos of the German soldiers, military equipment and the best stories you could imagine. It was terrifying times for the German people as well because your best friend or neighbor could turn you in for saying or doing the wrong thing.

@@windsorcorbin1005 - In the past we had the problem that we mus believe what the government told us, we had not the possibility to ask several million German people. This days it would be possible with the electronic identification card. We could make a referendum, all people could decide. The problem is that the old parties do not want to give the citizen the possibility to decide, because then the power to decide is removed from the politician and put in the hands of the people. Only the AfD want to give the people the power to decide over all the important things. Why? Because oll the other parties want to go into a new war against the Russians right now. I think this is crazy and stupid. We did not talk enough ... with the Russian citizen. (not with the politicians) To talk with American, Russian, German politicians is useless in my opinion, because they are mostly in a relationship of dependency with people from the industry or some other interest groups. But the only interest group should be (in my case) the citizen of Germany.

I can relate as well, I'm 13 and I love studying WW1 and WW2 equipment and artifacts. People always make fun of me for it but they are also ignorant. I asked my classmates, "Do you know what D-Day was?" My classmates, "What's that?" It's frustrating to have ignorant people in my class, but I'm glad to see someone of my age to care about such things. Owen, take care of yourself, and always remember that you are smart, and those who do not understand you do not understand many things. They may be ignorant, but you can educate them.

I live in North Devon in the U.K. and the entire coastal area was requisitioned by the US navy to train for the US amphibious landings in d-day. Also the US army hosted its Assault training centre in the same area. All US infantry landing on Omaha or Utah beaches went through this same centre. Great book about it call ‘spirit of the sand’ by Richard T Bass

One of the main areas the americans trained on was the braunton burrows, there is still a destroyed tank the trained on, a wall they fired bazookas and mortars at and you can even find old bottles from the americans and knives still on the floor. In a field there is an abondoned water tank too which the americans illegally dug with a bulldozer at night in a field. (Not the burrows)

It is interesting that in 1941 Rudolf Hess was convinced by the British secret service that he was writing letters with a British Duke of Hamilton and that a peace between Germany and Great Britain could be agreed. He even flew to Scotland to talk to the British. But they didn't want to talk to him about peace, it didn't interest them at all. Ultimately, Winston Churchill dashed all hopes for peace and failed to seize the opportunity. Instead, the British and German leadership portrayed him as insane.

Something to think about: When the Second World War kick off 1939 with invasion Poland and the French Invasion of Germany. The America Civil War was over already for 74 years. What my question is, 2000 years from now; What will humanity think of the Second World War? Will it be like Second Punic war when Hannibal crossed over the Alps from Gaul into Italian peninsula, 218-201 BC, or when the Athenians defeated the Persians at the Battle of Marathons and 490BC. Will the Second World War be a simple foot note in humanities, long history from the swamp to the stars that descended deep into the abyss.

Jerry is a nickname for Germans, like Charlie is for Viet Congs (since you don't know what it means, it was VC, Viet Cong, or the guerrilla fighters. In the military there's code words for every letter of the alphabet. V=Victor, C=CHARLIE).

Hey, i`m from austria and I have a question. Are Man used in Combat in WW2 like Private Paula in Full Metal Jacket? Not fat but not slim. In Movies you can see trained Body's for Combat only some higher Ranks have more Body. Was it okay for rekruting to have more body and get away in boot camps? I`m not fat but also not fit, theirefore my question maybe you have time to answere my question Greetings from Austria P.S. FMI, is it hypothesis possible to fly to you, say hi, to you, grab the Stuff and go on a Combatsimulation? Not You as Person only to do it as a not American

Larger personnel were quite rare during WW2. The majority of soldiers you see on the field at the time are physically disciplined, though “fatter” soldiers would be more common as time goes on. Note: people don’t need to be a certain size to attend military re-enactments. I cannot answer the rest of the questions as I am not yet an expert about military simulations.

They didn’t die for nothing. The battle launched the new Western Front, which would be one of the most major fronts in military history.
