I still remember when the news came out how it happened. My reaction, "wait, he was involved in a serious crash involving a whaaat?!" I was in disbelief because many athletes will travel by air & arrive at their destination in one peace. The fact that this happened being helicopter as opposed to a stock car, I was in total shock that this could happen because the likelihood of a NASCAR driver's death is more likely to happen on the track behind the wheel of a car. Will always remember the kid even after these near 24 years.

@isabellaereshki2 жыл бұрын
A lot of small aircraft were grounded and inspected and rebuilt after that if I recall, many entertainment and sportspeople went back to trucks and busses, air travel lost most of its luster and respect and safety record never to fully regain it after this happened, even with the faa trying to dramatically improve rules and training and safety standards, didn’t matter. That’s how special Davey was. NASCAR was still a small regional thing and yet Davey passing away this way went mainstream and affected many industries and totally changed the aircraft and air travel industry forevermore.

I've always been a fan of Davey when I was a kid. I jumped for joy when he won Daytona. His death was a huge shock to me. Worse, it has made me wonder if there is a jinx following me around all these years. I lost interest in NASCAR and switched to IndyCars. I followed Michael Andretti for a while before a new guy from Canada caught my attention. His name was Greg Moore. I followed his career right up to the day he died in California. Lost interest in the sport. The heartbreak was too much. I had heard a lot about Michael Schumacher and have a few models of his Benetton and Ferrari cars. He amazed me for years and I watched him win 5 world championships and then came that skiing accident. Nowadays, I barely watch motor racing. There are a lot of drivers I like and respect but every time I feel like getting back into a sport, I remember Davey and Greg and the heartbreak comes back faster than their cars could ever go.

To me, this was the day that the “Davey Allison curse” began. Since Davey’s last win there had not been one driver by anybody from Alabama to win at NASCAR’s top series.

I saw all my favorites in Sonoma Ca. back in the early 90s. Petty, Earnhardt, Kulwicki, Davey Allison. Not the best place for Nascar to run cars but a great place to get autographs. I couldn't get Pettys, he was my all time favorite. He was right in front of me but there was a fence and Petty was too tired from racing. So I moved down further where the big car haulers were parked to get an autograph from whoever I ran across . Davey was signing autographs and there was a lady there with her young boy. He couldn't quite reach up high to get Davey's autograph so I signaled to his mother if she wanted me to lift him to reach Davey and she smiled and, said please! Davey seemed like a nice guy to me even though Earnhardt and King Richard were my favs. Not long after that Davey passed and Kulwicki, then Earnhardt. I stopped watching racing for a about 10 years. It's a little different with racing today with the newer drivers but I feel the spirit that D. Allison, A. Kulwicki, and D.Earnhardt brought to Nascar will live on forever.

I remember it was the ford image for the THUNDERBIRD SC ads in 2004 I was able to buy one and I had a D Allison sticker in his honor, I only knew who he was for advertising and racing but I admired him very much, from Mexico city 🇲🇽

The day NASCAR died to me ..my husband was a Earnhardt fan and I was a die-hard Davey fan...he didnt have no business in a damn helicopter with the old man...makes me sick.

Maybe you should read up on what really happened. He was a fair helicopter pilot - not bad, not great - and they first blamed the crash on pilot error, especially since he was attempting a downwind landing which is a no-no However, upon later inspections and investigations of the collective (the 'handle' that makes the aircraft go up/down) due to witness accounts of the ac behavior just prior to the crash, it was found that the collective was BROKEN - metal fatigue was found in that part and a lawsuit was filed on behalf of Allison and the other guy and an undisclosed amount was paid though Hughes Aircraft still denied culpability. The part was found to have been faulty when it left the manufacturing plant. I looked all this up, wanted to know as I've lived in aviation for many years. Nothing on either side of the collective was broken, no cables, etc. Bubbles inside the metal shaft from manufacturing. Bad deal.

It seems maybe a fourth of the crashes I read about are similar stories of manufacturer defects. Maybe they just get more publicity due to it being their fault vs pilot error.

Those were some special drivers in that era. Gant, Waltrip, Allison, Bodine, Earnhardt, Martin, Rudd. Now who do we have? Busch? ughhh......
