Remembering Dick Allen (Philly Pressbox Radio, 12-9-20)

Like many old Phillies fans, Philly Pressbox Radio co-hosts Jim "Chet" Chesko and Bill Furman were saddened to get the news of Dick Allen's passing. As you'll see in this video, the slugger was Chet's favorite player back in the 1960;s ... and, for Bill, he was the guy that got him off and running in terms of collecting sports memorabilia. I was born in 1970 and sadly once I realized what baseball was in 1976-77, he was with Oakland & ready to retire. But being a lifelong Phillies fan & a S. Philly boy you heard the stories. As I got older I met Marc "Froggie" Carfagno )through us both being banjo players with the string bands) who was an ex-grounds keeper at the Vet & good friends with Allen & he was on a vendetta to get Allen elected to the HOF (which should have happened a LONG time ago). It's so sad that now he'll more than likely be enshrined posthumously. Rest in peace #15!

@@joemac9630 HOF voting is BROKE & HAS been for OVER 40 + years , now ! Needs to be REDONE ? I came up with the idea of Fans get 33 % of the vote , former players , mangers & coaches getting 33% of the vote & then the WORTHLESS voters we got now get the other 33% of the vote ! COMBINE all 3 votes into 1 TOTAL vote , so if todays voters SHAFT a player , the FANS & former players , mangers & coach CAN still [ OVER RIDE ] there part of the vote ! And to me 70 % of a total vote , should be ENOUGH to get you into the HALL Of Fame ? Just how many players fall just a couple votes short , for the lack of a couple of voters NOT voting ? Just like a AL pitcher missed out on a Cy Young award for that SAME reason , a few years ago !

Saw Allen dig ‘ Boo ‘ in first base dirt. Also watched him have a slap fight with Bowa between games of doubleheader.

The ball came off his bat like no other I have ever seen! Growing up in the fifties with all those second division years. Allen was the first black Phillies player of significance and he is a rookie 17 years after Jackie Robinson-almost two decades!

He had the talent to play 20 years and put up great numbers but he didn't. So he doesn't belong with Aaron & Mays but because of Harold Baines being put in every player can be put in.

A couple of things about Baines . 1st he MISSED parts of 3 SEASON's due to strikes OR his no's would be EVEN higher ? Most likely he gets 3, 000 + hits , 400 + HRS & way over 1, 800 + RBIS & these are just a few stats that comes to mind ? AND are HOF stats & he has nice stats , now . 2nk He was the AL'S BEST DH , long before they were saying the SAME thing for Frank Thomas , E. Martinez & David Ortiz , WHO ALL got into the HOF , too ? PS and the latter DH had ROIDS stories out about him ? BUT , BEING a RED SOX player , like all the Yankees players , this point , some HOW goes away ? WHY didn't they take ALL those World Series titles away form those ROIDS Yankees team ? Hell [ IF ] it was to come out , that Jeter was doing it , I wouldn't think much of it , either ?
