As a Yankees fan growing up in NY/NJ in the 80s, the Yankees/Dodgers rivalry was everything. Every kid knew the full line-up of both the Yankees and the Dodgers. In 1980s NYC, i didn’t know one Mexican, but i knew PRs, DRs, CRs, Peruvians, Cubans, everything but Mexican. There was NO hate for Hispanics in the 80s NYC. We loved the PR Parade just as much as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Let me tell you, FernandoMania was real even in NYC. He was hated yet loved even for New Yorkers. RIP, Fernando. You did so much for the sport. You will always be remembered.

Because of that, my grandfather saw it as a sign to make me a Dodgers fan. So without you, that might not have happened. I want to say thank you for what you've done for OUR team. And thank you for the bond that you helped create with my grandfather and I during that time. 43 years later, I still smile and think of him whenever I hear "IT'S TIME FOR DODGER BASEBALL". 1981, the year of the Fernando. Listening to Vinny and Jerry broadcast his first 8 starts, 8-0 with 5 shutouts. In game 3 of the 1981 world series, Fernando pitched one of the greatest and most courageous games in world series history. You had to have been there or watching live on TV to understand. He must thrown over 160 pitches, and Lasorda left him in there to complete the game and save the series for the Dodgers. This is very sad, there has never been a more humble, soft spoken, and well behaved Baseball player than Fernando. The hispanic community in LA was so proud of him, and he represented them so well.

Huge Giants fan here in the SFV. This hits hard. He was a great ambassador for baseball, one of the biggest reasons the Dodgers are right up there with the Lakers as the most popular team in L A. To give you an idea of how big he was, I was about 13 or 14, from near Pittsburgh. I went to Florida to visit a relative one winter. On the TV was some type of off-season league in another country (they played when the MLB season was over). I look up, and shockingly excited, I see that Fernando Valenzuela was pitching for the team. I said....THE Fenando Valenzuela? And yes it was him, pitching year-round. This was probably early 80's.....maybe 81 or 82. What did I do? I grabbed a camera and took a picture of the television set while he was pitching. He was a huge deal.
