Remembering Rev. Cecil Williams

A champion for the poor, the homeless and a fighter for racial equality - the Rev. Cecil Williams whose love and compassion was the rock and foundation and guiding light for all who walked through the doors of Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco, has died. The reverend died at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was 94.

I was a regular at Glide in the 80's. After the service, Cecil would be at the bottom of the stairwell and would give you the warmest bear hug. I miss his warmth and compassion! Thank-you for your service Cecil! RIP!

When I was working on a construction project in the City during the late '80s I bumped into the good Reverend. WE exchanged hellos and I thanked him for all the good he was doing for folks. He was very kind during our short conversation. Our World needs more Souls like him, he is missed.

I was a regular at Glide in the late '60s-'70s. Rev. Williams provided a powerful sense of community. I remember after services we'd go down to the basement, where "rap tables" were set up, and we could sit down and talk to people from all community and political organizations, from the Daughters of Bilitis to the Black Panthers. I moved away decades ago, but will always feel the compassion I felt at Glide.
