He truly is the embodiment of elegance. I never get tired of listening to him speak. I watched Lilies of The Field last night, his performance is mesmerizing. Let’s all honor him by watching his films, his interviews, keeping his memory alive. May his work continue to touch the lives of future generations.

Consider it done:). I watched (re-watched) both Lilies of the Field and To Sir, with Love (the latter is available for rent or buy on KZbin; the former is available free with ads) yesterday. I saw A Raison in the Sun several times. I will be watching In the Heat of the Night soon.

His voice. His bearing. His dignity. His immense talent. How could anyone not love & respect this charming, beautiful man? A class act all the way. Such a loss. We need more examples of the best of humanity like he was ,not the garbage people we are forced to look up to today. They have not an ounce of the class this man exuded. God bless him. To Sir, with my love.

Most people criticizing his "safe" roles must not have seen any of his movies. There was nothing safe about what he did. He took a lot of risks and I never heard him once complain. RIP Mr. Poitier.

Right, slapping a white man in the 1950's in a movie, you call that safe. Or interracial dating like in Guess who's coming to dinner. Come on. Respect this man. Its few people left in this world that deserve this respect.

Life is crazy. For the last month, I tried looking for his films, cause they seem to be erased from film catalogs. Then this happens. His work is SO important and needs to be shown more than what we see these days. Maybe now we can get some of Mr. Poitier's cinematic medicine. R.I.P. Mr Sir. 🙏🙏🙏

My mother was a young teenager in 60’s Scotland. Sydney Poitier was one of her first major film star crushes. He managed to break down inherited prejudices. It would have been awkward for my mum to take home a black man as her boyfriend. Thanks to him, my mum brought me up without those prejudices. We watched To Sir With Love together in the late 80’s. I too fell for his stunning looks and strong presence. To you Sir, With Love from me and my mum. 😘

My mother would make me and my brothers watch his movies when they were on. She held Sidney Poitier up as a shining example of what a proud black man looked like. Growing up in 1960’s Deep South Mississippi as a child wasn’t easy. l recall my mother talking about “In The Heat Of The Night”, especially the scene in which Sidney slaps the bigoted white plantation owner Endicott after getting slapped first. Unthinkable that a black man would do that in Mississippi and live to tell it. I didn’t understand! All that changed as l got older and experienced racial discrimination firsthand, had fist fights with whites because of my blackness and saw the movie as an adult. “Mama, I fully understand now.” I now remember telling her once. And she knew l got it! Sidney Poitier demanded respect and got it! I’m a fan for life. What a great black man!!!!! Rest well, Sidney….😔🕊

Part of it is that all of these wonderful people are not with us anymore and the world is getting a darker place as a result. The world lost Archbishop Tutu a few days ago. Nelson Mandela a few years ago now. Going back over the last few decades musical heroes like David Bowie, George Harrison and John Lennon. Movie stars like Doris Day and Kirk Douglas, it goes on. I know people get old and have to call it a day eventually but it still hurts. R.I.P. Sidney, his movies are forever now.
