Oh yeah, starting the video off with “cry for me”, absolutely solid mate. I love this series so much. Discovered it right before Covid hit and when I was laid off I played through sky 1-3, the crossbell duology (with the Geofront translation), then cold steel 1-3. Omg it was magical. Cold steel 4 for westernized and I finished that, cementing itself as one of my all time favorite series. After finishing reverie, I’m so SO ready for Kuro no kiseki

I love this so much! I finally beat Cold Steel 4 just a few days ago and have been putting Reverie off so I can take a break from the series for a little bit, but I COMPLETELY understand the feeling you mentioned about how progressing through the series does create sort of a sense of yearning for the trilogy that started it all. I've been wanting to replay the Sky games SO much recently! They are so special to me, and it would be interesting to revisit those older games after having spent so much time getting better acquainted with the mechanics.

Yeah, I've been spending the larger part of the last 3 years playing through this series. I did stop to take a break and play other games a couple of times in between to avoid burnout, but found myself being drawn back into the world of Zemuria really quickly most times. I'm currently close to the end of Act 3 in Reverie. Don't think I'll make it through, before Daybreak comes out. But I had to take a longer break before starting Reverie, because last year I played both Crossbell games and then Cold Steel 3+4 all in a row. It feels weird to think that I'm almost caught up on a series that's been ongoing for 20 years.

Ideally you should play the games that are talked about in this video before Zero because Zero relies pretty heavily on a lot of the plot points that happen in this game and a lot of the biggest emotional payoffs won't hit if you aren't familiar with backstories. Any Windows PC built in the last 20 years or so will run the Sky trilogy flawlessly, but the first two are also available on PSP and all three Sky games are available if you have a hacked Vita and are willing to do some faffing about to install the English localization patches. Zero is still a great game in its own right, though, and its sequel, Azure, relies less on knowledge of the Sky trilogy.

I have played Trails of cold steel 1 and 2 as first and it was quite unique and even emotional experience (quite similar to Kingdom hearts in a way) even though I didn't knew about sky series or crossbell arc so I am planning to go through all accessible games so excitement is trough the roof already being on chapter 2 of SC

Man I hope they port the Trails in the sky trilogy to the Switch. I have trails from zero, trails to azure, trails into reverie, trails of cold steel 3 and 4 on the switch, and I'll be pre ordering daybreak soon. I bought a ps vita and bought trails of cold steel for it and will be buying cold steel 2 for the vita as well. I haven't started playing the games yet because i want to play them in order, starting with trails in the sky. Might have to get then on steam.

For anyone looking to get into the series: Sky is the ideal starting point. Think of it like Kingdom Hearts. Yeah, you can technically start anywhere, but you won't know the past things that do get heavily referenced (especially the further you go). Yes, even the events from the Sky trilogy get referenced. The story is actually interconnected and they throw out massive spoilers for things that have concluded in the past arcs. It's not really purist talk, just a wish for people to experience this great series and see how it evolved step by step. Sky is the simple beginnings basically, and I'm really glad I got to experience it.

I wouldn't "gatekeep" that much with starting in another arc of the series, because I started with CS1 (Sky was forever in my steam wishlist, since before it's release there) and it hooked me from the very start, so I played the first finished it right on time for CS2 and continued there until the end of CS4. After that I went back to Sky played through the series until CS1 and it was a nice experience, because there were so many moment like "Omg, so that's what was mentioned in CS", so it was kinda like playing prequels to it. I still have Azure on hold, but there are too many great and large games that I can't casually play Azure next to them, but I'll try to start it in July and Daybreak, the CE will collect dust in that time, right after it. It is probably my most favorite game series of all time.

Also the Switch is missing Trails of Cold Steel 1&2 which only came out in Japan and Korea from Clouded Leopard

Eh, I'm not complaining about only this trilogy being unavailable on modern consoles. The fact that NIS/Falcom has like 8 games for a storied franchise that was once Japan only at the time in the West is incredible. You can try the Trails through Daybreak demo on the Switch/PS4/PS5. It's not the "ideal" place to start the series (that will always be Sky First Chapter), but it is an amazing game, and could even motivate you to give the rest of them a try. The demo is pretty long. Although you only get the Prologue on the Switch, whereas you get the Prologue & Chapter 1 on the PS4/PS5. That's about 4 to 8 hours worth of content, depending on which version you get.

I always feel FC was under rated, I personally like the calm light heartedness that doesn't have an epidemic threat, it just tells a journey of two growing alongside each other. Every Trails game has amazing combat, though not everyone has Dungeons I enjoy. I've played up to cold steel 3 so far and admittedly for me that game has probably been the weakest in the entire series for me.

I started trails of cold steel I 7 years ago on the ps3. Loved the characters and world building, especially the music, it made me hate on tales of music even more, because trails nailed it with lower budget. Having npc changing their dialoges and following their stories made the world really feel alived. But i stopped playing it, because i often heard that you would miss out on trails of cold steel wihtout the context of trails in the sky. And here i am, owning trails of cold steal 1-4, but i cant play it because i wait for a port for trails in the sky. I am a console player and will never bring me to play the games on pc, so please for the love of god, port the games so that i can finally play the series.

You could be waiting another 5-10 years if not longer, and it's no one's "fault" by any means. The Sky games (as well as Cold Steel 1 and 2) are trapped in licensing limbo because Falcom and XSEED don't seem to be on good terms anymore but retaining the rights to the localizations still makes XSEED money, of course. My personal opinion: don't wait. The events of Sky are largely unrelated to those of Cold Steel at least until CS3 anyway (coming from someone who has played all Trails games leading up to CS3) and a much more relevant timeline to be abreast of is that of the Crossbell games, which already have console ports if you are unaware. I will note that Trails to Azure does outright spoil (or very unnecessarily hint at) major end-game plot points of both CS1 _and_ 2, so since you already have all the CS games, I see almost no reason to wait to finish CS1, if not CS1 and 2. Many western fans started there because it was the most accessible Trails game for years, and I happened to start there too, though for different reasons.

I'm so tired of seeing people on Reddit make posts to the tune of "I started with X Trails game and I have no idea what's going on. Should I go back and play earlier ones?" There's simply no reason why they should be played out of their release order if it's your first time playing the games. Just Google their release dates and play them in the order of earliest to latest. It's really that friggin simple.

"No reason" is definitely not true for everyone. Depends on what you value in a game. I'm equally tired (if not more so) of fans scaring newcomers away with "release order is gospel" takes when the game they actually want to play is Zero, Cold Steel 1, or now Daybreak, when there are perfectly valid justifications for playing any of those as your first Trails game. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the only reason for starting in order is if one has already committed to playing all of the games. CS1 is a great advertisement for the Crossbell games, and Zero is a great advertisement for Sky, so if someone wants to go back out of interest, they will. But insisting that newcomers start with Sky is actually directly hurtful to Falcom's sales and disregarding their own efforts to make newer entries like CS1 and Daybreak beginner-friendly. The sales part in particular is where I put my foot down. If not for Cold Steel's popularity in the west, well over half the series could have stayed in Japan.

Plus, gameplay and graphics improve witheach successive game which makes it all the more logical to start at the beginning.

@@MrBergste do you think Sky FC is the best game in the series? And if not, you would still insist starting with it for someone who told you they're only interested in trying one Trails game? Or what if that person said they don't care about "the stories" and only gameplay? Only the biggest of fans will _actually_ play all of the Trails games, of which there are admittedly plenty, but there are also many reasons to play and enjoy a video game other than story. The stories are told in their given order for a reason, but have you considered why Falcom would try to cater Daybreak for new players? It's because they need sales to operate their business. By saying there is "no reason" to start anywhere other than the least expensive game, fans are not only driving newcomers away, directly and negatively impacting the series's sales, but implying that it is more important to play the least expensive Trails game than any other in the series, which also negatively impacts sales. I'm not saying you must or should recommend people play out of order, but you can at least be considerate, both of Falcom and of other fans. The progression in story, graphics and gameplay that you described only matters if someone actually plays multiple games, and seeing that not even a third of people who have ever opened Sky FC on Steam have even finished chapter 1, I can assure you that a lot of gamers never have and never will finish a single Trails game, rendering the "worldbuilding" and "overarching narrative" experienced throughout the series meaningless to them. Can you say with full certainty that people who never finish Sky FC wouldn't enjoy something like Trails into Reverie or Daybreak? Of course you can't, but because so many fans do a poor job of advertising Trails as more than a visual novel with combat sections and exploration, they'll probably never know whether those games would appeal to them or not.

The only way these games would receive an English dub is via a remake or very ambitious remaster à la Evolution, which is a non-zero chance, but a near-zero one in my opinion (at least with regard to the English dub specifically). Have you considered trying the Cold Steel games? Cold Steel 1 onward has been dubbed in English, but not before. The dub certainly is a plus for me, but it is worth noting that you're going to be reading a lot regardless.

I don't think I've said this yet, but I'm super grateful for your coverage on this series. Been a huge fan of your channel since the Fallout 3 days and seeing you talk about a series that very quickly became one of my favorites of all time really hit home and felt special to me. Very excited to see what Falcom has in store for us in the near future, and for fans to get their hands on Daybreak soon. I really don't mind what form the Sky games take in order to be put on modern consoles, but a Sky remake in Kai's engine... sweet baby Ragnard that would be insane. Do most Trails fans recommend using a guide when playing the sky trilogy? I'm asking as a jrpg fan who wants to start the series.

It depends, but if you're open to using a guide, I would ultimately recommend using one at the start to get an idea of what you're missing if you don't. There are missible collectibles like individual chapters of in-game novels-no, seriously, these games have novels that you can stop to read at your leisure but you have to collect the chapters yourself more often than not-treasure chests in areas that you may or may not be able to revisit, etc. There are even "hidden quests" which require going out of your way to talk to a given NPC at a specific point in the playthrough, lest they expire. The quest system in Sky is especially unforgiving, because they might expire on you while you don't think you're doing anything. Unrelated recommendation is the evolution voice mod, which adds voiced dialogue from the Japanese "Evolution" remaster to almost every cutscene in all 3 Sky games. I won't give instructions here, but if you're interested and need help with installing it, just leave a reply and we can talk on Discord or something.
