My mum used to play this song to me every evening before bedtime when I was a little girl. I used to demand to listen to “elephant up the stairs” every evening whilst jumping frantically on the bed holding her hands. This has always been our song. She passed away 2 weeks ago yesterday and I listened to this on the car journey home from the hospital after her passing away holding my hand. She was the love and light of my life. My best friend, my soulmate, my greatest confidant, supporter, and had a heart of gold. Our bond was ethereal and other worldly. It was greater than anything that could be explained in this life. It was gifted from the great beyond. Love you forever mumma. ❤️

Your mom is part of the Great Beyond now, watching over you and bending spoons and keeping flowers in full bloom - for the sweetest dreams of you. ❤ My dad and I loved Andy Kauffman and watched his old routines and appearances. This March, it will have been six years that I've had to live in a world without him. My heart goes out to you.

@@SpacePriestess What a wonderfully kind, heartwarming response. Thank you. I believe wholeheartedly that they’re both bending spoons and keeping flowers in full bloom from a better, great beyond. I’m sorry it’s been six years without your dad. Anytime without them is far too long and you have my respect for still standing strong. It’s lovely to have songs/media that remind you of them and take you back to happier times. All the best to you

I understand. I discovered REM while in middle school in the early 1980s. Their music was integral in my life thru high school and college. I also spent a lot of time in Athens, Ga visiting friends and partying where REM was always played. Their older songs bring back so many memories. Even though you're in your 40s, the music sticks with you and shapes your life.

I've watched the stars fall silent from your eyes All the sights that I have seen I can't believe that I believed I wished that you could see There's a new planet in the solar system There is nothing up my sleeve I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there Over my shoulder a piano falls Crashing to the ground In all this talk of time, talk is fine But I don't want to stay around Why can't we pantomime Just close our eyes And sleep sweet dreams Me and you with wings on our feet I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there Over my shoulder a piano falls Crashing to the ground I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great beyond I want the humming birds, the dancing bears Sweetest dreams of you I look into the stars I look into the moon I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs I'm tossing up punch lines that were never there Over my shoulder a piano falls Crashing to the ground I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great beyond I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great Answers from the great, answers I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great beyond I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great Answers from the great, answers I'm breaking through I'm bending spoons I'm keeping flowers in full bloom I'm looking for answers from the great beyond

I was just learning to drive when I first heard this song back in early 2000. The freedom of youth, picking up friends in my car when it didn't matter if we had anything to do - it was still so amazingly fun just to drive around hanging out/listening to music. When I listen to this song now, I can close my eyes and picture an entire night out 22 years ago. It's extremely bittersweet, because it feels so recent to me still but I know the things I'm picturing happened decades ago. This song's ability to help me go back to 1999/2000 is unparalleled

you're right, the lyrics are repetitive, but they are also highly unusual.....I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs, I'm tossing out punch lines that were never there, over my shoulder a piano falls, crashing to the ground...I'm bending spoons......this is great writing, and captures my imagination...and until you drew my attention to it, I was simply not conscious of the obvious repetition....

In 'The Great Beyond' by REM, hope and sadness seamlessly intertwine, forming the very essence of this song. It possesses a remarkable ability to evoke both joy and melancholy, a duality that resonates deeply upon each listen. The song feels like an "Emotional tapestry woven into musical notes, akin to the lines of a poignant poem. Its beauty is truly exceptional, captivating in its ability to reflect the intricacies of human emotions.

I fell in love with this song harder than I did when I first fell in love with my first girlfriend. Falling in love with a girl brings a false happiness and false hope that it will go the way that you portray everything in your mind. Falling in love with a song is a comfort that will stay with you forever. Your first love will fail and you will get over it. Falling in love with a song will stay with you forever. This song will always take my breath away and will forever stay with me and will never leave me. P.s RIP Andy

Gosh this song speaks to me. Andy Kaufman was the man on the moon, not because he was alone, but because he saw the world diffrent than anyone who lived on it. Almost like he was on the moon. People didnt know what to think about him, so he struggled to have people understand him. He was fighting an uphill battle against society and against the norm. Like pushing an elephant up the stairs. And he did things that were funny to him. He didn't care about what his audience thought about him, he was being his own person all the time. He threw punchline that were never there. He was just diffrent and I admire him. I wish I was around when he was alive because he is one of my inspirations in life. If you read all the way to the bottom, then thank you ✌😁
@jamesb1988
@jamesb1988 4 жыл бұрын
The mistake people make regarding Kaufman is that he was a comedian, which is incorrect. A comedian always wants their audience to laugh and to like them, where as Andy was a performance artist. Sure, sometimes he desired laughs. But sometimes he wanted your pity. Others your anger. Most always your confusion. He was the first man in media to constantly make you wonder if what he was doing was scripted or real. Thats why he took to wrestling so much... the art of the wrestling promo, you have the good guy and the bad guy, one incites cheers and support, the other a dastardly wrong doer you're begging to see get their comeuppance, Andy LOVED that character work. You're absolutely right about the only person he was wanting to impress was himself, to see just how far he could push certain buttons, and boy did he make some lasting memories. The fact that some people STILL aren't 100 percent sure that he's dead, he would have LOVED knowing that.

Probably my favorite song ever, insanely beautiful. First time i heard it was back in December 2003, at that time i used to borrow my Playstation 1 to my older sister for playing cds. I couldn't put a toy together (a beyblade), so i walked into our bedroom to ask her to help me out and this song was playing in the background. I had to stop doing anything to listen to it in religious silence. I was in total awe. Unbelievable, amazing. Magical. When the chorus kicked in for the first time in the song i was hooked. So i checked the album booklet, it was the track number 2 on "In Time: The Best Of R.E.M 1988-2003". Also "Bad Day" and "Animal" were the only two new songs, of course since it mainly was a greatest hits haha! At that time i already knew R.E.M. though, as a fresh 13 year old boy.

My Dad would play this on full blast in the car and us kids; me, my sister & cousins would sing the whole song at the top of our lungs until our vocal chords gave out. And then the song would end and Dad would say "whose up for round two?" - and we'd do it all over again. This song came on the radio in the car today & cracked up the volume and screeched every word. (Side note, it is a great anger-release when you have built up rage.)
