Remington 1100 Gas Seal Replacement

The Remington model 1100 semi automatic shotgun has a rubber o-ring that serves as the forward seal of the gas operation system.
These need to be changed occasionally. You should inspect the seal when you clean your gun. If you notice the o-ring is nicked or becoming cracked it should be replaced.
It`s an easy and simple process that requires even less disassembly than is needed to give the gun a good cleaning.
End of video shout out is for Hawaii Volcano Squad.

Truly a sweet shotgun. I had an 1100 with the fleur de lis pattern on butt stock and forend, scroll work on receiver and bolt, white spacer and diamond design on grip cap, 1" recoil pad, 26" improved cylinder vent rib barrel, in 12ga (2.75" only). Sold it to a good friend a few years back for $325. Didn't care about getting a great price, just wanted it to have a good home. Miss that gun.

While I agree to definitely have a replacement o ring available I doubt that saving the old one makes much sense. These rings are so inexpensive ( many are sold 3 in a pack ) that for me at least, just getting an extra one or two rings works for me. Some guys use vitron #021 rings from a hardware store which are even more economical. Good video, straightforward and easy to understand... good tip about over tightening the magazine cap for guys like me who have a habit of going " just a little bit tighter ".

Great video ! I have a 1100, and it's forerunner, 11-48 (built 1953 - was my father's), and a Browning Gold Hunter, all in 12 gauge. I'd sell the Browning before I'd part with either Remington. :) Thanks for the video!

I bought this one new in 78. I never did do much bird hunting, so it`s never been dragged through the brush very much. But it has busted a lot of clay pidgins over the years.

Very nice 1100 I have a newer 1100 sporting and it my best gun. One thing I would add to this great video is that you could put tape over the threads on the magazine tube when installing the o ring otherwise you may get little cuts in the o ring which will break it down sooner.

if you want some spares that don't break the bank on shipping, #021 o rings (viton) from the hardware store are a good choice too. they don't quite last as long as the remington ones(they graphite coat theirs) but generally only cost here around 59 cents so just toss a 6 pack in your choke tube bag just in case. The remington ones last me around 1,000 tactical slugs(1,300 fps) or close to that for high power ones before they started looking questionable and for less than a candy bar, why take chances with it failing.

Hugely overhyped issue. I replaced the metal V ring with a Viton one in 1967 so I wouldn't lose that V ring. Over 100,000 rounds and 54 years later it is still in service and shows no signs of wear. They only get moved during maintenance, and roughly sliding them over those threads kills most.

Nice video. I have an 1187 12 gauge and make a practice of replacing that o ring once every two years - even if it isn't cracked. I don't use that gun that often and I think dry rot could do just about the same amount of damage as overuse. It's about a 20 year old gun and works fine. Maybe a dumb question, but what is the difference in an 1100 and an 1187? Weight? Thanks for a good maintenance video. I'd like to see a few more from your semi-auto pistol collections
@1957Shep
@1957Shep 10 жыл бұрын
Like any rubber o-ring, they get dried out and will get hard and crack. Not sure what all the difference are between the 1100 and the 11/87. Seem to remember that the 11/87 has a self regulating gas system? Or an adjustable gas system? The 1100 doesn`t. I was always happy with the 1100 so I never thought much about the 11/87.

410mossberg With a few exceptions, all my auto pistols have already been in at least one video. I probably won`t do any more range videos until I get my back fixed. Have a herniated disk. Right now it`s kind of painful just hanging around the house reading or fooling with the computer. Going to the range would not be much fun. Was supposed to have had an epidural done on the 25th, but they called today and said it would have to be rescheduled. Don`t know when yet.

410mossberg I`ve been through this before about 10 years ago. That time I had to have surgery. Hoping I can get by without surgery this time. I`m still going to try to do a few videos. Just not shooting videos. Right now it just hurts too damn much to be on my feet for very long at a time. Some days are better than others. Some days it`s pretty painful no matter what I do or don`t do.

Being rubber or is it neoprene , I would guess this O-Ring will even decay with time alone, like siitting in the Gun safe. I know on Cutting Torches the O-Rings in them will decay simply being exposed to the AIR as the Air contains OXYGEN and I have been told Oxygen will decay rubb or surely syntnetic rubber wish is MOSTLY what we have. Most things we call runbber are actually synthetic rubber. Just a thought. Trying to keep O rings available for my torches has never worked very well. However, if I put them in a plastic bag, put a soda straw in the bag when it is almost completely zipped shut, then sucking the air out and Closing the bag completely seems to help. Also, I keep them in a cool, dry and DARK place. They will last awhile if I do THAT. Of course one NEVER "oils" anything with a cutting torch. But I would guess these O-rings are made of similar material. I have been keeping Cutting torch rings like tis for about 40 years. but they won't keep forever no matter what I do. So, if you have one been saving for several YEARS you better take a close look. I have a Remington 1100 Tac 4, I almost never shoot it, though I really like it, but it is still virgin new. BB

I have a Rem 1100 tact 4. How long does the O ring last if it is not fired often?? I am curious about that. My Cutting Torches and things like that, if the O rings are exposed to AIR they will go BAD whether they are used or not. I don't shoot this weapon often because of the high cost. So, it stays in the safe most of the time. It is my belief they will go bad whether you shoot it or not. I heard you say, "Every few years they should be changed out. Mine is about 6 years old, it is still PRISTINE but I would hate to pick it up and need it and it not GO. I live in an extremely high Crime area, but I have another shotgun I use and shoot more often, it is a PUMP. But the Rem 1100 I have holds 8 in the tube and 1 in the barrel it is a FINE firearm, i just wish I did not have to worry about a mickey mouse O ring when I pick it up to use. I figure the O ring will last quite awhile sitting in the safe, but maybe you have some experience with that. Thanks, BB
@1957Shep
@1957Shep 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Burnitt Inspect it once in a while. You can see if it is starting to get cracked or damaged. If you keep it lubed so that it doesn`t dry out it will last much longer. If it isn`t allowed to dry out, and not used much, it might last 20 years or more. I try to change mine out every 5 years or so. But mine gets shot a fair amount. For a self defense gun, I would change it every few years even if it doesn`t need to be. Better safe than sorry. I would hate to find out that it split when I needed it. If it does fail, you can still fire the gun. It just will not eject the spent hull. So you have to pull the bolt back to eject the spent hull and chamber a new round. The gas seal is cheap, so there isn`t much expense involed.

1957Shep Hey THANKS!!! Some O rings on some other things might not like certain kinds of OIL, but I would think Rem Oil would be FINE to lube it with. If the tube was sticky or dry, just the action of the gun being fired would knock the O ring out in one firing would be my guess. Thanks Again, BB
@1957Shep
@1957Shep 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Burnitt Any light gun oil, like Rem Oil ought to be fine. The barrel lug will keep the O-ring from moving forward out of the groove. The O-ring is just a seal that keeps the gas from the barrel ports from escaping forward instead of pushing the piston to the rear to help work the action. Keep in mind that if the outside of the magazine tube where the piston moves back and forth gets excessively dirty or rusty, it can cause similar problems.
