I think the cartridge in the side of the receiver is re-done. All of them that I have seen the brass is proud of the receiver metal slightly, and they don’t have primers in them. I notice this one is recessed and there is a struck primer in the case.

It's not redone. The earlier models of this gun all had this feature. If the little 'primer' was gone, it was a good sign that the gun had suffered a case head separation. Later, they just left the 'primer' out. All the ones I've seen have a 'U' stamped on the primer for UMC.

Pointed bullets are no goes, the first one catches on the follower and jams things up! Mine was made in 1912 and is very worn. Feeding was iffy, sometimes ok if worked smartly, sometimes the bullet would jam on the edge of the chamber. Replacing the carrier and dog fixed that, even cast bullets with a 3/16 flat point feed!

I’ve had one for 60 years, identical to the one in the video. I had it dated by the factory back when the would do such services. Great old gun, but near impossible to fix if anything breaks. Mine had excessive headspace and I was lucky to get a gentleman in North Carolina to re-barrel it from his dwindling stock of barrels saved from the Ilion factory.

I think ALL the 14s and 8s had the same problem. Technically speaking, it was actually that the chamber was cut to absolute maximum dimensions to insure proper chambering and extraction. Winchester did the same thing with their self loader series. In their hey-day, in the 20's and 30's, nobody really reloaded for these cartridges like you have to now, so the idea seemed to be to get the case in and get it out reliably...once. If it survived, that was a win. I have seven of the old Rems and only one pre-WWII version, in 25-20 has a normal chamber. All the others are oversized. This was cured by setting the FL sizing die out roughly 0.010", trimming and fire-forming. That cured it. I do have one post WWII model 141 in 30 that has an absolutely perfect chamber, and I can't decide if that was accidental or that by the end of WWII, they'd finally discovered that the oversize chamber wasn't necessary.

@@miltonhall7078I used to handload for that bad 14 barrel. I made a false shoulder by pushing through an 8 mm neck expander, then neck sizing gradually till the case would just seat. I have one test group shot with this funny looking cartridge that measures 1 inch @ 100 yards. This was with a scope, a concession to my old eyes. I believe you are correct about oversize chambers in 14's and 8's. I have been making 300 Savage ammunition for my 81 seen on Andrew Petty's channel a few weeks ago. I cut down and resize 308 Win brass which yields a 300 Savage case about 0.005 in oversize at the web, but they plunk test just fine in my 81.

@@ggibson511960 The post WWII guns, both the 81 and the 141 also seemed to have some of the same issues, though not always, as I mentioned above. I do have an 81 in 300 Sav. that I have to go thru the same process to correct the headspace, and on the 300, this can be challenging due to the short neck. My correction for the 300 is the same as for the 30. I got a Lyman M die in 32 and carefully opened up the neck w/o hitting the expander button. Next, measure how much the primer has backed out with a plunge caliper and add about 0.005" to that. Set that same distance between the shell holder and the bottom of the die with a feeler gauge, and FL resize. You'll get that funny looking double shoulder, which will disappear on the first firing, fireforming the case to your particular chamber. You only have to do this once. Just FL resize after that with the same die setting. According to a retired friend of mine, who was in the die business for many years, FL sizing was essentially unknown prior to WWII. The old BP calibers only needed neck sizing, sometimes not even that, and with the transition to smokeless, handloading was definitely discouraged. I've seen some earlier ammo boxes for the old Remington calibers that contain the statement: "It is not recommended that these cartridges be reloaded." So; get it in once, shoot it, throw it on the ground. Now we have to deal with the result of that thinking.

Great information on a rifle I never heard of. Thanks! One question or suggestion. I would love to know on firearms reviewed what the is value range for 100% original vs the shown model and what a modified or reblued one might be worth. Just so we have some idea how affordable they might be especially if we want one as a shooter and not an investment piece. Just your opinion would be worth a ton. Again thanks so much.

I hesitate to provide anything about pricing on social media platforms. They tend to freeze or suspend accounts if they think anyone is trying to sell a gun.

I have my grandfather 30 cal. But only 1 box of ammunition. Where can I find a case of ammunition?

The best place to find ammo for these calibers is behind the reloading press. There are a few boutique makers, such as Buffalo Arms, that offer them from time to time, but the price is prohibitive. I bought a box of 20 a number of years back and paid over $40 for them then. I can't imagine what a case would cost now. Reloading can be as much fun as shooting, though IMHO these older calibers aren't the ones to cut your teeth on. That said; the first caliber I learned to load in 1960 was .243 Win, and the 2nd was .25 Remington. New brass isn't cheap either but with the exception of the 35 Remington, the 25, 30 and 32 are all formed from the same case quite easily. You said you have a 30 so all you'd need is a 30Rem FL die and either 30 or 32 brass, and of course a case trimmer. All these old guns have maximum dimension chambers so items like an outside or inside neck turner isn't necessary. I encourage you to think about it. You can shoot your old timer a lot more without having to break the bank. One caveat concerning brass. Try to stick to new. Older brass can become brittle and can be prone to splitting at the neck or shoulder or even separating at the case head. New brass is one expense that is well worth it.
