Next up is the Remington Model 521-T which is a bolt action box magazine fed .22 target rifle made in 1953. Made from the years 1947 to 1969, these were sold as a competitively priced target rifle and offered a more inexpensive way to get into target shooting .22 style. Here we explore it's design, patents, and similar models. Of note was the 514SB or smooth bore which led us down our latest rabbit hole.....the Mo-Skeet-O.
CORRECTIONS: At 3:26 I meant to say “Remington 22’s” not “Winchester 22’s” and at 12:55 I incorrectly said “locking lugs” instead of “extractors”. I’m getting old.
Be sure to check out the video on the Remington Model 514 for more info on these awesome rifles.

Thanks for tuning in.......see ya all soon!

Coolness! I'm glad that you dive into the patents and engineers of these guns.

Oh yeah. It’s what we do. Sometimes it’s hard to find that information. Some of these patents are impossible to find even after hours of research. Some manufacturers liked to hide who was designing their stuff.

I once had a 513T, which was a marvelous rifle. It had a Redfield receiver sight. Eventually, I gave it to one of my sons as a present. While I still had the 513T, I found a 521T at a good price; the 521 had the Lyman sight you described. I was surprised to find how accurate it was, despite having a blade front sight vs. the globe sight. It would easily do less than an inch group at 50 yds from a bench. I also gave it to my son as a gift. Both of these are classics, matched by very few modern .22 bolt rifles today. BTW, early in the video, you misspoke - the 521 does not have dual locking lugs, it has dual extractors. You clarified this later, but I knew what you meant anyway.

That snuck through my editing…..as well as calling my trio of Remington bolt action 22’s Winchesters. I’m usually pretty good at editing…..slipping a little I guess. I agree with you on the accuracy, these are great target rifles even though they follow a conventional “cheaper” .22 set up. Quality control was good and this manufacturing process created a lot of consistency to barrel alignment. See the patents….it was basically a pipe machined into a rifle barrel.

In some ways it`s kind of like the modern Savage 22s. Nothing fancy, just a good solid little rifle.

I bought my 521-T a couple years ago, date code XSS Dec. 1947. Found a spare mag on ebay but ended up using that in my 511 that I bought with no mag.

Oh man I have that happen to me more than once. One time I got a box of Remington 45/70 cartridges in a bulk buy of reloading equipment. And that box of ammo taunted me FP oh about 2 years. Till I picked up a Marlin 336 ported guide gun. Then another time I was given a vz58 bayonet and I had to get the rifle that it went to. Needless to say it really annoying when that happens.

Liberty Tree Collectors has the Remington 513 T aperture for 15 bucks. It’s not the exact model you described but it’s sure looks close.

Just ordered. It’s actually listed as an aperture for the Lyman 57MS sight for the Mossberg not the 57RS for the Remington. It should be a direct fit regardless. What’s nice is it’s an original Lyman part. We will see. Taught me something though. I thought the RS stood for receiver sight, but apparently it stands for Remington sight because the MS is for Mossberg sight. Very interesting where your information can come from. It was $19 shipped. Thanks for the heads up.

@@MilsurpGarage You're welcome, sir and thanks for your help on the Ted Williams 34. I noticed the same thing with RS vs MS. I think the main difference is in the diameter of the receiver and spacing of mounting holes. I believe the disks are the same. It would make economic sense for Lyman to make one disk that fits many sights.
