I just inherited one a "62" the rails do show the beginnings of death wear. It has Weaver 4x fixed. I fired one round to confirm action. Cold bore 33 yds. Elevation perfect, windage 2" left. Eye relief not right for me. Will work with it some. Dont know if I'll ever hunt again. I'm 65 and my other refuses to leave Marxifornia. Wish me luck.

I feel I am a subject matter expert on the 742 and appreciate history of this riffle. You did a good job with this video. It does though have reliability problems, especially with those that are not properly maintained. Maintenance of the 742 is critical for proper operation. Totally clean every year, lubricate moving parts with high quality grease, never use oil.

That’s great advise. We have always been meticulous about cleaning our guns. We don’t target practice with them. Just zero them in and shoot a few rounds each year to make sure the scope is on target. My father’s pair have not had any problems in 60’s years. I think some people over shoot them. They are not made for that. Merry Christmas!

Beautiful rifle, the guns prior to 1985 are the nicest. Remingtons are collector guns now, gunbroker prices are very high right now in 2021. Remington is starting back up next month, but I doubt the new guns will be the same quality as the old ones.

I like the ones prior to 85 too. They are really nice rifles, especially in lower calibers too. Yes, all guns are going up on price with President Biden. I think gun sellers like that. There is some serious price gouging going on. In 4 years things will go back to normal.

I appreciate your video. You might find it helpful to know that "clip" is not the correct name for the part that holds the cartridge. It is a removable magazine. To see a clip, reference a clip from an M1 Garand for example. Some noteworthy bolt action guns use a stripper clip.

I have a 7400 in 270, love it, I bought it 25 years ago from old man that bought it new, for a elk hunt, that never came about from health issues, so it was never shot, perfect cond., when you take it down to clean, take out bolt, then trigger group, use gun scrubber and q tips to clean rails, DO NOT USE OIL, USE MARINE GREASE, TAKE A QTIP, AND PUT A LIGHT COATING OF THE GREASE ON RAILS, EXTRACTOR, IT WILL RUN LIKE GLASS, this is a old trick that skeet and trap shooters used on 1100s, back in the day, this will end any jam problems, the nick name of jam amatic came from guys that didnt know, or just had bad cleaning habits, and used oil to clean and lube the working parts, every semi auto made HAS TO BE KEPT CLEAN AND LUBED with Grease, only use oil on outside of gun, if you own a 742,7400, 760, 7600, this will be the best tip u ever got

Most of these rifles got a bad rap and they were often call Jam-O-matics, my dad hunted with one in .308 years ago and said he had issues with it. I now have two of these rifles and they function flawlessly, what most people don't know is that since this is a gas-operated semi-automatic they require a little more maintenance than the average bolt rifle. At the end of every hunting season you should take the fore-end off the gun and clean the gas system, the spring and sleeve and gasport. Also you need to make sure the chamber is clean so there's no debris especially any moisture in there as it will rust and cause extraction issues. However the most common issue including the one that my dad had was the fact that they would leaving the magazine full of cartridges stored out of the gun the entire year when the gun was not in use, this makes the leaf spring inside the magazine go flat and cause feeding issues. My dad said the most common problem he had with the one he used to hunt with was the third and fourth round wouldn't feed that was most likely due to a week magazine spring. Keep them clean and oiled, don't do mag dumps, it's not an AR. Use them as a hunting rifle as intended, they were never designed to have thousands of rounds put through them and if you try to do so the bolt locking lugs will chew up the receiver and wreck the gun. If used properly and kept clean this rifle will last generations.
@knightingalesaid
@knightingalesaid Жыл бұрын
I agree 100% with you. A lot of people don’t clean their guns. I have never had a problem with mine. My father had 2 of them. And he killed over a hundred deer with his. There was never a complaint. I agree they are not target rifles. I saw one in a .243 one time. It was as light as a pellet gun. Thanks for the comment!

I'm sure this may be one of the few which worked as it should, but are you serious about the statement of this Jam O Matic 742s being a favorite, loved etc.? Every one I owned and worked on always jammed and rarely fed a entire 4 clip mag..I literally had gone through every possible solution to remedy these issues for customers and was one of the few who would or could thread these or shorten the barrels in my lathe after fabricating a jig...I can take these apart in my sleep as a result of trying to solve the jam issue of this model..Anyone who has lived long enough can tell you Remington screwed the public on these 742 and 7400s; still selling them while knowing the receivers were softer than the bolt therefore wearing the receivers out to the point they had too much play and jammed as a result while not providing a replacement receiver. SO YOU EITHER THREW THE GUN OUT, SOLD IT FOR PARTS OR SCREWED ANOTHER BUYER..I tried everything to get many of these to function and went as far as magazine mod kits or just polishing every moving part. I even purchased a brand new in the box 7400 with improved harden rail inserts in the receiver (Remingtons so called solution) and it too jammed. A brand new gun...This is a sorry design and by the time Remington new it they still sold them to the public to avoid losing money and screwing us all who bought them and trusted them..The "Ole Jam A Matic"....Good vid though and appreciated..

Thanks for the comment! I know that some people have had problems with them. They do wear out as you stated. I was raised up hunting with them. We only shot 1 or 2 x at a deer. Ours never jammed. An 100’s of deer have been taken with them. If you are going to shoot them for target practice. They won’t work that well. We zeroed them in an only shot them 3 or 5 x a year at deer. They never failed like that.

I agree. These rifles were very popular in the 60's and later. My dad had a 742 BDL in .308 Win and killed hundreds of deer, an elk and a mountain goat with it. I presently own a 74 2 BDL in 30-06, a 7400 in .270 Win and a 7400 in .243 Win. They all shoot very well. I also have a Model 100 Winchester in .308 Win. All of these are very good rifles and I'm very pleased to own them. Oh, just FYI, the proper nomenclature for the gun's shell holder is "a Magazine" not a "Clip". Not really all that important but there are some people out there that are pretty anal about stuff like that. I'm not but just thought I'd weigh in on that. Great video and I agree with you wholeheartedly, these are truly great rifles!

740/742/7400 were one of the worst designed rifles ever made. They are essentially 100 rounds to self destruction, sometimes 200 if properly maintained, which rarely if ever happened. If you have one with a low round count, good bore and chamber, no scarring inside the receiver, put it away, don't fire factory loads in it.

I have a 742 wood master my son bought for me it was made in 1966 so I would never get rid of it I've used it for hunting and hav killed a lot of deer with this rifle the only trouble I've had with it was a spent shell hanging but by keeping I cleaned regularly and using only remington cartridges I haven't had those problems I've mad many 200 to 300 yard kill shots and further on me thing is true if you make a good shot your game will be laying there 99 percent of the time I have should the 180 grain bullets but I prefer the 150 to live in north Florida so the deer here aren't as deer in the northern states but I've never had to hunt but one deer and that was a gut shot and it didn't go maybe a hundred yards the rest have been laying where I shot them I love that hunting rifle it's been very good to me and dependable gun for deer hunting if you have one of these guns you can see what year it was made by looking on the I. Right side side of the barrel I believe that the side but we're the barrel meets the wood stock right along there it's stamped what year it is made it's a been a g test gun for me I'll always keep it my love ldest son bought it for me when he was in the army after his second tour in IRAQ he done three tours but he bought it up in kentucky he was with the 101 first division in fort campbell Kentucky do it's a special gun for me and I will pass it on to a Grand son when I'm gone .

The bolts were known to wear out on those that we were shot hundreds of times. It may be something simple like a little rust in there where the bolt twist out. Maybe it needs cleaning and oiling. It could just need polishing. "They are hard to pull back, that's normal." They are not like a bolt action rifle. They have a heavy spring in them. I doubt your grandfather wore it out.
