As a painter, this is exactly more or less how I would of done this. Find a a hard edge or where the seams meet and tape there. If there is no hard edge, I would spread to an area a little further, back mask it, and blend it. That spray can brand also makes a blend product that you apply just after you get close to the end of your soft edge. Essentially it's just a really warm reducer in a can that will melt in between the fresh applied clear and the area you sanded. That is where you can later grab a little 1500grit sandpaper lightly sand and compound by hand to blend it. Regarding different shades of color and because it's the original paint used on the car, it has to do with the air pressure. If air pressure is too high, the pearls will stand up causing a different shade. Generally, basecoat wants to be sprayed with lower air pressure, around 12-18psi depending on the gun and fluid tip. Also what temp reducer used as that also plays a huge factor. Future side note, look into a LVLP spray gun, they are low pressure and are excellent for a hobbyist/DIY and don't blast a ton of overspray. You will save on material too. All in all, you did a good job. Don't beat yourself up, you are learning and you are killing it.

So I'm curious with the chromoli rust like steel.Or were it let's start to Oxidize, I wonder about maybe spraying a clear coat.Either way it looks great man

More painful than hand polishing tube is maintaining the polish over time… for the amount of hours invested I would’ve just paint or wrap it in suede… still I really like the way this project is going! Hang in there and keep it up 🤙
