The bathroom in our house, like the mudroom, hasn't been updated since it was built in 1983. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem, to update it, you could just add some new fixtures and paint the walls. But this bathroom has a funky layout. There are two showers and when you walk into the room, you look straight at the toilet (and anyone who may be on it). So rather than just updating the cosmetics, I've decided to completely remodel the bathroom by changing and simplifying the layout as well as doing some much needed beautification.
This plan involves removing the dedicated stand-up shower at one end of the room and transferring the toilet to its more discrete location. The shower/tub combo that is also in the room will be replaced with a more modern, tile and glass shower. And in the awkwardly-large space that the toilet once occupied will house a soaking tub.
Moving these fixtures also means moving drains and supply lines from under the floor. I am quite fortunate that I have access to these lines from my basement shop. So I had to reroute and replace some of the drain lines to accommodate the new toilet position, switching around the shower, and adding the tub. While the room was gutted, I also wanted to add some new lighting and a new vent fan. It's going to be a lot of work, but we're going to tackle it one piece at a time.
Demolition can be the most daunting and/or the most fun part of any remodel. Most homeowners have a natural affinity to smashing holes in their walls, which is completely understandable. But in our case, there are very few elements in this room that need to stay. I poked around before the hammer fell and discovered that one wall scheduled for removal was housing some crucial vent lines and water supply lines that go to the second floor. I am very happy that I figured that out early so I didn't unintentionally ruin something else in the house.
After that, It was time to break things. We carefully removed the vanity and counter-top that will eventually be reinstalled, Ginny smashed some unnecessary walls, and Josh ripped out a bunch of drywall. Most shower/tub inserts have a lip that is covered up by drywall, so don't worry about being careful not to ruin the walls, it's easier to just replace the sheetrock where necessary later.
Once the inserts were removed and the toilet was taken out, I ripped up the linoleum floor and removed the ugly wallpaper. I patched any holes in the walls that were staying, but other than that, we had a clean slate.
I cut out the old toilet drain pipe (it wasn't disgusting), the old shower drain, and the old shower/tub drain and started from scratch. This was a lot of measuring, cutting, and gluing in fittings, but they all finally lined up with the holes in the floor.
Disclaimer* if you aren't totally confident in your electrical abilities, hire an electrician!
I ran new lines to two boxes above thew vanity for new sconce lighting and also went up into the attic and ran new boxes for three more ceiling lights. Two pendant lights would hag above the toilet and the tub, and I added a moisture-rated, recessed light above the shower. I also rigged up a new light switch and exhaust fan.
Again, we'd like to thank Lowe's for sponsoring this project and check out Part 2 of the Bathroom Remodel.

Bob - A day after you posted this video, I had a pipe in my basement burst because of the cold weather. Since it was set back pretty far in the wall, the plumber recommended going with Pex tubing so he could snake it in. I was so happy that I actually knew what he was talking about because I watched this video. Thanks for always being so informative during these posts, they are super helpful to all aspiring woodworkers and homeowners!

Enjoy your videos. Been a tool girl over 50 years and have been restoring old houses since the 70's. If I can offer a tip: rather than forcing nails back out the face of the trim, if you grab a pair of vise grips, you can pull them through to the back of the trim. You will get very little damage to the face and can re-use the trim. This is key in an old house where you want to save as much detail as possible. Of course, it works best with finishing nails, not nails with wide heads. Keep up the good work!

A better method is to use a 4x3 flange and tile right up to the 4" coming through the floor. Then you can caulk around that joint and keep the tile water proof so any leaks wont rot the sub floor. then use a 4/3 flange and slip it in the inside.

I’m always fascinated how simple the houses in America are built. Last summer we renovated the bathroom of my grandma and wee needed to cut a new hole in the concrete floor. We were also restricted to the previous location or the tap because the walls are also made out of concrete. Moving electrical lines seems to be easier as well. If I recall correctly we needed to use a pipe somewhat similar to your water pipes to put the cables into, when we moved the electrical lines in an other room.

More than just that wrong with it. The two trap arms are tied together before the vent so even if they weren't S-Traps they still wouldn't be vented right. I've learned that when steaming wallpaper, you can use a spikey roller called a perforator before you start applying stream. It allows the moisture to better penetrate the media, and makes it easier to remove.

Hey Bob, if you just spray the wallpaper with a mist of water from something like a bottle commonly used for spreading pesticides or with a wet sponge and give it a few moments to set in, then peel from a seam it comes off very easily. My family are wallpaper hangers for the past almost 40 years and this is how we do it every day.

I thought one big advantage of pex was home runs to a manifold so you have less joints for potential leaks and better pressure when using multiple faucets at a time. Also not sure I'd have enough faith in those shark bite fittings to put them behind the wall, but if they last, that's so much easier than sweating copper!

As a plumber. People who use shark bites are thinking about us service plumber, pretty good job security when those are used. The only bites I use are the caps, for temporary plugging a pipe. Never permanent.

They're more likely to be used by diy'ers and installed improperly. That's most likely the reason for the higher fail rate. I doubt it's the product itself.

One tip for removing wallpaper with that steamer (because I did the exact thing recently) is buy a scoring tool. It makes small holes in the wallpaper, allowing the steam to soak through. Wallpaper sucks to remove anyways but this steam and a scoring tool helps. Big time.

Just a thought, when you remove your baseboard molding that you will reuse, do not pound the nails through the finished face. I use a standard sized vise grip. Grab the nail on the backside, make sure your VG is about a 1/4" from touching the back. Start to bend the nail over using the rounded jaw of the VG as a guide and roll it right out. No damage on the front.

@10:45 Didn't see this addressed in the video, but when you notch out a stud for your wire, its a good idea and code in some places to put a metal plate on top of the wire to prevent any drywall screws from hitting the wire. Kind of like the plaster guard for plumbing.

Great video. Very fun to watch. I figured out for myself that if the job called for at least 4 or 5 Sharkbite fittings, it was cheaper to buy the crimping tool. I wasted too much money putting off buying the tool for way too long, so I had to say something! The Sharkbite fittings are perfect for transitioning from copper to pex though. I use them all the time for that. For pex joints, I've found crimping to be just about as simple and easy as the Sharkbites at 1/4 the price. Bathroom is looking awesome. Can't wait to see the final result.
