We wanted to declutter this space by making dedicated spaces for hanging jackets, long-term storage, and laundry management. In addition to creating functional spaces in the room, we wanted to do a general face-lift to this 1983 space.
Along with perusing the aisles at our local Lowe's store, we found that there was a massive inventory of products and fixtures on Lowes.com. My wife and I spent many nights choosing paint colors, tile designs, and room accents, all of which was made easy by searching Lowe's inventory. To save on project cost, we decided to re-use the large set of cabinets and long countertop that was already in the room. We planned on painting them a more neutral color and adding some modern hardware as a budget-friendly way to maximize storage space without having to rebuild cabinets.
While the room was empty, we painted the walls and changed some light fixtures. I know that we would have to do some touch-up paint at the end, so we went ahead and painted the walls with some Valspar paint & primer in one. Now that the room was wide-open, it was time to get to work making the wall-hung elements while we waited for tile.
While we waited for the tile to arrive, I began on the shelving. This project called for three shelves, two over the washer & dryer, and one more as a taller shelf with a hanging rod suspended underneath. All three shelves would be in the same style, some beefy cedar 2x4s suspended by some super minimalistic steel brackets.
This beautiful, rustic sink is heavy, and when I ordered this fixture, I was unprepared for the amount of specialized components it needed. Once we hung the sink, I realized that the sink drain was an atypical size and had to special ordered. Josh and I went to our local Lowe's and pieced together the right fittings to mate the special, 3 1/8" drain to the existing plumbing.
Josh made quick 3d-modeled solution to this irritating and complex problem. He made a two-part bushing that would fill the sink holes and slide together as you tightened the faucet to the water line creating a tight and secure mounting point. We printed it on our Lulzbot Taz 6 with the MOARStruder so the part was almost solid plastic. After a few quick iterations, the faucet bushings fit perfectly and the sink was all done! To clarify, the fixtures are beautiful and with the proper amount of research into the installation needs, they would have been mu ch easier to install.
We selected a movable membrane underlayment from Schluter that the tile would sit on. This plastic material from Schluter needed to be fixed to the subfloor with mortar. Next, we mixed up the mortar for the tile. My wife and I decided on grey half-hexagonal tiles from Emser. I could arrange the shapes in a triangular/star pattern for a really cool design.
Furthermore, we brought in the bench I made recently out of the Basswood slab and hung a line of coat & backpack hooks on the wall. With the washer & dryer in place, I could really see how awesome this room looked. But there was a blank space above the bench that we decided to fill with some cubbies.

in england where you keep your washing machine and tumble dryer is called the utility room and where you take off your hats and scarfs or store them is called a coat room, coatrooms don't have to be where you come in because they're not the entrance to the house or even a back entrance they're mostly nice wardrobes with seating to take of your shoes sometimes they're also toilets there was one at the house i lived in before my last one

Nice rework for the Mud-Room... (A few thoughts, while I was watching) 0:39 Glad you re-used that large square-tub sink. They can be good for lots of things. A good way to setup that style of sink in new location is: put a counter top over that old square sink. Add holes through counter top for faucet, so faucet plumbing installs through BOTH the sink and counter. Cut sink hole a bit Smaller than sink, so counter will rest on sink rim. (save cut out piece) Seal cut counter edge & underside, so water will not affect underside. Attach metal to underside of counter, that will hold/support that sink cut-out when you place it back IN the space at sink. Now, you have a sink when you want one, and a work counter top the rest of the time, and the sink provides a storage bin underneath counter too. 4:18 When you realize that water/drain lines run where you wanted to put 2x6 support, one easy option would be to mount your support board directly to wall studs, exactly as you have it positioned at 5:19, rather than moving the drain pipe and notching 2x4 studs. Mount the sink brackets to that board, as originally intended, and you have the option polyurethane attach supports to that wood for matching shelves and towel hooks, giving it extra functionality and blending it into the room's new look as well. 8:24 Nice Look for your shelves... especially after that poly finish. 18:40 Cool Tile pattern... 20:12 Good example using an angle-cleat to hang shelf/cabinet on a wall, so you can easily attach the cleat board (making sure it's level) and then hang the cabinet a few minutes later. 24:13 It's important to have GFCI outlets anywhere near water/sink and laundry. All of the outlets I see look like simple plugs. Of course, some houses have the GFCI feature included as part of the breaker box circuit... and you can also wire ONE GFCI outlet per circuit, and then chain other outlets behind that, where they are also protected... BUT neither of these details were mentioned, when talking about the renovation of your laundry/mud room. I am including that here - so people doing their own renovation will keep safe wiring in mind.

These home renovation videos are some of my favorite of yours. They're quite inspirational, the average guy would just go to IKEA and get some cheap furniture and look for some flooring that could be easily placed on top of the existing one, whereas you just go and create your ideas all by yourself from the materials' installation to the build of the furniture itself. Awesome!

6:32 Nice photobobbing! 19:18 Love the Star Wars t-shirts! 22:31 "Man, you know the other bubble is gonna say..." "Yeah... I know." 24:13 It's great that you were able to reuse the cabinets and the counter top, but at some point you're going to have to replace that counter top with something you make yourself that matches the bench, shelves, cubbies, etc. 24:40 The room may be modernized, but the speech bubbles are apparently still stuck in 1983.

A great update. Consider Dryerbox when venting your dryer. Gives a clean, flush look and allows you to set the dryer closer to the wall. Plus shortens the vent pipe length making both code compliance easier for some and reduces static pressure.

I'm super new to wood working (started in September) but my first project was making 6 shelves for my room and bathroom. I had to learn how to straighten and plane the boards (they're all walnut) and how to finish using Tung Oil, which was way more involved than I originally thought, but I have no complaints with the result. The shelves have transformed the way my bathroom and bedroom look, with way less clutter and provide some much needed storage. From there went onto creating a new nightstand and desk, and now I'm hooked on making stuff. :) I love the remodel. It looks very clean, and while it took a while I'm sure it was worth it. Well done.

My wife and I recently bought a small, first time house. The basement had wood sleepers with plywood over dirt, and I just got done with the demo. Old stone basement walls...the whole 9 yards. It's neat, but also VERY difficult to work with. I'm installing a new beam, foundations, etc. to open up the area, and we have a washroom/mudroom that will be renovated once we get a concrete floor poured, and foundations worked out (stone foundations at a few spots) I'm jealous I don't have a normal, orthogonal house! I hope our washroom comes out looking as good as this!

Same difference, just make sure that all surfaces are pressure washable, all edges are sealed( and give it a coat of bleach, (that's a false positive waiting to happen)) .

Love that you actually ripp open the wall and reroute the plumbing, if necessary...I would have just given up at that point 😂 ‚It wasn’t meant to be! And anyway, we could just support the weight of the thing with some beams from below. Or something. Although, now that I think about it, that old sink actually didn‘t look all that bad....‘

although when you’ve already done all that other work, it wouldn’t make sense if you just quit there lol. Why stop there when all you meed to do is a lil’ more hard work compared to the other stuff. Eh, thats just my opinion, but it really does look tiring

about the shelves, i was like “cool, i want two of those in my room” but then..... i only have some trinkets from different trips that add up to about 1kg MAX.. asked myself if it was worth go look for a shelf that holds a grown up man, being that my life is boyfriendless, i’m a teen female with a bed and my dad -the only man in the house- doesn’t go around wanting to sit on my shelves...... not good enough to spend my money on yet but they do look VERY nice, congratsss!

FEBRIZIOtv I know, right? The first time, I was confronted with walk-in closets and mudrooms in American movies, I immediately went: That’s genius! Why don’t we have that??‘ We usually have our washing machines in the kitchen or bathroom and just a large wardrobe in the bedroom for storage.

We call them mudrooms here in the southern US. Usually on the side or back of the house. Normally has a sink, washer dryer and a place to hang coats and put boots and shoes. It is where you leave the dirt and mud from outside so you don't track it in the house. It is also where your friends and family normally enter the house. I refer to our mudroom as a decompression chamber or airlock (like on space ships).

Man, everything about that mudroom came out great! The floor is crazy good and all the details make it all come together. The Singer sewing machine in the garage is nice too.
