Unfortunately we all know that once it goes into effect it will cover all drones. That’s what Bureaucracy does. Starts reasonable and by the end of the road it’s a mess of incomprehensible rules and arbitrary commercial special-interest restrictions from their “consultations”. But maybe I’m just jaded from seeing it happen over and over and over and over and over and over again!

Great insights into a complicated concept and document. NAV CANADA should seek some advice from the 'Plain English Association'. Not every drone pilot is engaged in commercial activity or likely to spend a lot of time on studying complex arrangements. If recreational users face a challenge in understanding this document and the arrangements it proposes, they're unlikely to comment - and nothing good would result. Thank goodness you are providing some interpretive assistance and keeping an eye on this issue.

Thanks, Don. I'll be interested to look at this more closely. Electronic conspicuity (in the form of ADS-B) should be mandatory for all crewed aircraft in Canada. General aviation doesn't own the airspace and the most likely technology that would reduce the risk of any collision would be mandatory ADS-B and the ability to pull the online feeds into the RPAS operator's remote. Imagine if your remote could tell you before takeoff that there's a helicopter at 500ft over the horizon, headed to your zone of operation.
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
Thanks David! Yes, mandatory ADS-B out would tremendously improve safety. We tried to build an ADS-B warning system into Drone Pilot Canada, but the data providers wanted an arm and a leg.

Thanks Don. This is what many consider micromanagement. The last company i worked for was a publicly traded company that felt the need to micromanage. Employees bought out the majority of shares and fired all the management team. It went on to become an awesome company. This document sounds like a classic example of people attempting to justify their jobs. None of this should apply to sub 250 drones. This is a classic case of overreach.
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
This doesn't apply to sub 250g drones. And the proposed approach actually seems well aligned to the risk, in my opinion.

Eight categories of operation, yet none of them are specific to FPV operations. Why does TC continue to ignore this? Until they get their act together regarding FPV, we who do it are basically restricted to sub-250g toys. It's the only way to conform with current regulations, it appears to me. Makes one consider becoming a scofflaw. . .
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
They really should address FPV soon, but in this case, the types of operation are (somewhat strangely...I think its one of those 'you had to be there'' decisions) sorted by the flight pattern. Still weird to differentiate between some of these. Probably based on who was in the room.

Hey Don, I have tried to contact you through the app and I left one message on video you made and you did get back to me with your email address. However, the email address does not work and trying to contact you through the app does not work I’ve checked everything on my end. I can’t figure out what’s wrong, but the question I have is about remote remote ID in the US the drones that are going there are all remote ID capable. I just bought a drone in 2024 and I’m wondering if it is going to be remote ID capable the same as the US or am going to have to glue something onto it?
@DonJoyce4 ай бұрын
Hi...my email address dondroneson@gmail.com does indeed work...at least according to the dozens of emails I receive every day. Lots are automatically detected as spam, which may have included yours. Answer to your question: remote ID is not required in Canada. DJI drones (at least) purchased in Canada do have remote ID, but it is not active in Canada. When you are in the US, it will automatically activate. That's what I've been told...

Lets' see all manned aircraft with ADS-B or other remote I.D. technology before you go after unmanned. I also agree with some of the other comments that once a bureaucracy starts it will take over and all user will be lumped into the same pile. Another thing is for all the individuals who are hobbyist's and take the time to design build and fly FPV aircraft (not drones) that they recreationally race or fly with others for fun who probably fly way more hours than the over the counter "drone" camera platforms but have not been really counted or considered.

Things are changing fast in the drone world. But good to know that we won't end up like the US with RID. I spent some time in Mexico this winter. Their rules are nice and simple (for now) and sub 250 gram drones can fly almost anywhere.
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
Good to know...thanks!
@billkulcsar58189 ай бұрын
This will be for all drones from I understand, including sub 250? Recreational flyers still zero changes(sofar..) This is to be more for using for business needs? Site surveying, transport of products etc. Since your flying in controlled airspaces(more dangerous areas)?? when trying to gain permission to fly, would have to ask though some website/app, will it be instant or you have to wait days for someone to review the request? If I wrong in all this,sorry. I only have sub 250 drone but treat it like a bigger one, its good to learn all this, so the hobby doesnt get ruined.
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
Hi Bill! This layer of operations applies only to drones over 250g. And yes, most of the scenarios they are discussing are for larger drones flying beyond visual line of site, typically in commercial, first responder, or other larger-organization roles. All requests for authorization would go through apps or websites, where normally there would be a set of flight characteristics that could be automatically approved and others that may require manual intervention.

Thank you, very informative. This seems to attract layers of fees and costs to be added by various "external" providers of services. The hobby is no longer the fun pastime it once was.

It appears they are considering, or at least presenting the optics of considering, the status quo with regard to sub 250 vlos platforms. Six yrs is a long time in the political realm though. I find myself distrustful of the optics, take for example the repeated high profile bvlos Shennanigans taking place at the Gordie Howe Bridge. It seems every dingle with a dangle is flying right across the border to get images of both halves of the closing span; they have been at it for months documenting their disregard for the lax law and enforcement we enjoy here in Canada with our sub 250's. Judging by the number of dingly danglers watching the 'content' you can be sure it is monitored by the working group.
