always walk upstream and fish upstream when your fly fishing.. trout almost always have their head pointed up stream.. You'll get a few bites going down, but you'll double your bites walking upstream and nymphing. I fish the eastern sierra's around mammoth.. Been following and own one of the ol camo with bright orange lfg emblem..

Tip: Keep your line pinched between your forefinger and cork during your drift. You'll feel every eat, and you will be able to get a hard hookset.

With kids in the woods the best baby sitter is a couple big dogs, they will protect them and literally drag them out of danger at times when they get too close to water etc.

I’m a Colorado native and fished trout my whole life. Thank you for sharing this trip. Camping is a great experience for the kids. My son fell asleep on his dads leg, standing up when he was 4, on a camping trip we took many years ago. This video just brought back great memories. The kids absolutely thieve in the great outdoors. I look forward to your other videos from this trip.

My PB Brown Trout was a little over 18". Super special story with it. My Dad grew up going on a big week long fishing trip every year. They rented the same cabin and fished the same streams and always had really good success. I grew up fishing mostly lakes. I'd never actually caught a fish in a stream. Back in 2020 a camp that both Dad and I were supposed to work at for a week cancelled due to well. . . Dad and I decided to go down to the area he grew up fishing and he was going to teach me stream fishing. We had been fishing for 2 days and I still hadn't caught a fish. It was the last day mid afternoon I was getting kinda defeated when all of a sudden, less than 6' from me, I saw a huge fish just come OUT of the water and it felt like someone tried to rip the pole out of my hands. I fought this fish for close to 10 minutes before landing it. I knew it was big, but I didn't know how big Browns normally were. It was my first stream fish, and my first Brown Trout. Dad was 150-200 yards downstream so I started heading his way to show him. He saw me walking down the road towards him and got out and started walking towards me. I had the fish behind my back and when I pulled it around front, he almost fell over! He told me in that area Browns were normally 10-12" anything over 15" was considered big. It may have been the only fish I caught on that trip, but it was so worth it. My Dad is almost 60 and has developed a form of neuropathy that is really affecting his balance. Due to the slippery nature of wading through the stream he probably will never be able to stream fish again. I treasure that trip more than any of the countless fishing trips we've taken together over the course of my life. I'd never seen my Dad so happy getting to go back to a place where he formed some of his fondest memories of childhood and sharing them with me. Man, I didn't mean to get emotional, but I hadn't really considered the fact that that trip was probably his last time stream fishing. In a way it makes that trip even more special. I'm grateful that we can still take trips to the lake and fish together.

Love to see the family out in the outdoors! Do yourself a favor though man, go buy some strike indicators and retire the Euro nymphing setup. Every time I hit a new area I at the very least go poke around the local fly shop too. The folks there are usually friendly and open to offering advice on flies, locations, anything.

Word of advice for euro nymphing, set the hook ALL THE TIME. It's really hard to differentiate from bottom, other snags and a fish, but more often then not, if you have the weight and presentation set up properly, it's a fish. You can not set the hook too much euro nymphing. Learned that from Lance Egan the legend himself

So about that Motorola thing and having one for you guys fishing in the one for the base camp, it would have been a heck of a lot easier and cheaper just to get a two-way radio or any GMRS or FMS radio. But of course that would only help for communicating for the people within 10 to 20 mi. But you wouldn't need to send text messages back and forth to the wife then. Of course, if there's any ham radio guys on here too, they'll probably say you can use HF to reach even way further out.

Don’t be afraid to put a bit more pressure on the fish. 5x should be about 5-5.4 lb test. You’ll be surprised how much weight the rod and line will hold when it’s a distributed. Also don’t be afraid to try a dry fly. Meadows like that usually have fish who will eat terrestrials with complete abandon.
