I have the same .007" drop in the ways up near the headstock. However, I cleaned them up, aligned the axis on my headstock and ways, and just know that the drop is different depending on where I'm cutting. Mine's a 1948, older than yours, and probably more hours and wear, and it still cuts great! Clean up the burrs on the ways, make sure your chuck jaws are aligned, maybe get a 5MT ER40 collet holder, and you can still make great cuts on it. If you give up, let me know and I'll buy that lathe from you!

Hello Earl, I have wear on the carriage also. I added blocks to the carriage that rides on unworn or less worn surface on the lathe bed. I don't think I have shown any of that in a video. I have thought about having the bed reqround and add turcite to the carriage but that is very costly. Thanks for watching and commenting and please subscribe if you haven't already. There's a lot of heavy sighing going on in there! Just take it all apart, clean it all. You can replace the shafts and the needle bearings as well as the bronze bearings/bushes, and you'll be back to stock! I did the same on my Sheldon QCGB, and it was way less time and effort than trying to recover old clapped out parts.

When you buy old machinery you win some and you lose some! I think I would have past on this lathe in I could have taken it for a test drive. I bought it without powering it up, it was in a dark warehouse so I took a chance. I can make it work and get decent results. Mike - Plus8Precision

I'm new to lathes and machining and I have an old Sheldon S-56 I'm trying to restore. Thanks for this video. I'm going to have to tear into the gearing and this helps greatly.

The keys on the QC gearbox shaft are called "Hi-Pro" or High Profile Keys rather than regular Woodruff keys - they are also referred to as "Machine keys"... Available at: McMaster Carr - www.mcmaster.com/machine-keys GL Huyett - www.huyett.com/Products/Power-Transmission/Machine-Keys/Hi-Pro-Keys

You can have the bed reground at Kinetic Corp., but I don't know if it would be worth the expense... Kinetic Corp. website: knifemaker.com/index.php/services/mattison-grinding-way-grinding See also Keith Rucker video at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHrZg5xnjsyUl9k
