Looks like the same locks. That you can pick up at Tractor Supply. The ones for tool box's. There around $5.00 per lock. Then you have a new pair of locks. Going to try it on my KW, as I have 4 fuel tanks. And one lock is messed up. Will let you know if it works.

They might be the same. The dealer wanted nearly $50. for a regular cap and $100. for locking cap, so I just put a bolt and some washers in the hole and forget the lock. I didn't ask about new locks only, the owner didn't care about the locks, they were on it when he bought it.

Instead of on top you can put silicone under the washer and when you tighten it down it will spread out

I had the same problem and got the lock working by soaking the heck out of it with PB Blaster fo about 20 minutes. It still leaks fuel all over the side of the tank though.

I tried that first, then had to rip it out.

If that happens again, consider using an air chisel with a flat end bar to vibrate the cylinder. Not saying it will work, but the hammer leaves such a set of marks. Look on line for "cylinder lock",keep your cams and replace. Get 2 "keyed alike"

Thanks but the owner doesn't care about the lock, only to be able to get the cap off and on. Thanks for watching.

can you make a video on fixing a fuel gauge that moves a lot meaning not getting an actual reading on how much diesel is left
@GordonRobertsonDIY7 жыл бұрын
I can't do a video on that anytime soon but it's no brainer to change the fuel sending unit. it's on the driver side tank in the middle on top, just take the wire off and take off the screws, and change it. Thanks for asking and subbing.

Nice job Gord, those caps are such a pain in the ass :)

They are too expensive to replace, so this seemed to be the best option. Thanks Will.

Those are NOT wafers, they are discs. It's a disc tumbler cam lock, just like on cheap tool boxes, discount filing cabinets, and "cash box" type lock em up boxes. Wafer locks have double cut keys, not single cut. About the only place you'll find Wafer locks in this country is cheapo "builders key in knob" latch sets from the 50s through 70s, usually made by schlage. They were the "kwikset" of their day. The difference is the direction of spring loading, and actual aperture the key slides through. A disc setup is loaded toward the root of the key blade (into the cut wedge, so the cut taper has the tumbler shoved into it by spring pressure) and the aperture in the disc is of fixed height ( so a zero cut will pass) but location on the disc determines key cut size. Wafers are spring loaded away from the cut, and have no variation in cut depth. They are single depth of cut, the coding is only which side of the keyway the cut is present on. The "root side" displaces the wafer into the cut, and both sides of the blade actively displace wafers, so every cut had a full depth "root" opposite, and the key cuts are NEVER symmetrical. Graduated top of my class 32 years ago, only one with a perfect score in both academic and practical tests, and that fact was due to a final written test question on Wafer locks, lol. Knocked out the 4 other perfect results competitors. National School of locksmithing, class of 86.

I think they're called "wafers." I've seen a few different ways these wafers are held in the cylinder with the springs and the space for the key.
@GordonRobertsonDIY7 жыл бұрын
You're right, they are wafers with the spring on the side instead of on top of the pins.
