I have seen many crimp connectors fail when used with solid wires. Crimp connectors tend to relax (spring back) somewhat, after removing the crimp tool, which reduces the compression, resulting in a less reliable connection. Crimp connectors are not as bad on stranded wire, as they are on solid wire. Crimping to solid wire results in poor connections that have high resistance, which results in heat, that can cause fires. NASA (and others) do NOT allow crimping to solid wire. On the flip side, wire nuts have a conical, sharp-edged spring that stretches when you install them, and they bite into the wires with many threads (wraps of the conical spring), while keeping a spring-tight compression on all wires that the conical spring engages with. But to the main topic, I am in the process of choosing a mounting solution for my solar panels, and this video helped me see some of the installation techniques and problems that can arise. Thanks for the video.

It's quality work when you treat a customer's roof like it's your roof. You don't want leaks or ugly looks from ground or roof. Neither do customers. When we did ours we scraped the iron ridge flashings and went with quickbolt 2. Still have a box filled with the old flashings. Great work Mr. Goat.

“Good from afar but far from good” - love this! I heard a guy say once (when concealing a less-than-stellar job) “I won’t be able to see it from my house”. Kinda like “pound to fit, paint to match”! LOL! So hard as a home owner to know whether installers are doing a good job the right way or just looking like they are - and that’s with anything not just solar panels.

Whomever is making the decisions is not the sharpest tool in the shed... spend the money to remove, re-roof and re-install... but then you re-use the same garbage hardware that appears to have caused some of the leaks? What did that save... like $500? How much extra time did that take you to deal with the old stuff? I know that wasn't your choice, but I won't do a re-install unless we're starting with fresh hardware/flashings.

Question??? Why do you not install the tracking system. Before the roofing goes down? Seems like it would be easier for the roofers. To guarantee a leak proof roof. Than you trying to install after the roof is finished. Plus you could better guarantee rafter connections. If nothing else just your main supports for your tracks.

I am need of a new roof. After I approached my solar company for a quote to remove and reinstall my 28 solar panels, they came back with a quote of $11,000. I feel cheated that they didn't disclose this cost upfront or we wouldn't have opted to put up the solar panels 10 years ago. The panels are leased and we still have 15 years more to go on the contract.

I am sorry but i couldn't get past the first flashing mount install. That roof will leak if he installed all of the flashing mounts like that. He makes the effort but continues the problem with installing "over" the shingles. That type of flashing mount should be treated like any other pipe boot sticking through a roof.

The real question is, did these solar panels cause this roof to go bad? I mean the roofing looked fine to me except where they drilled through the roofing to install the solar panels. To be honest I would never install something like this and then put a bunch of holes through a brand new roofing, to mount solar panels. This guy really lost his shirt getting talk into solar panels on his roof,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Is it always the same or would the initial installer have set their own?

I just don’t like the way that mounting system drills a hole right through all the shingles and relies only on caulking or sealant right at the hole. A better way would be to have an L bracket penetrate first, with the hole penetration being uphill, and then have a flashing that goes under the shingle above but over the penetration, routing water over or around the penetration and the panel support being downhill from there. This way, the tar sealant is secondary support, not primary.
