AMG ONE DRIVEN! Mr AMG on the F1 Powered Hyper Car!

AMG’s Hyper Car DRIVEN on the Nurburgring GP Circuit! Just saying that out loud baffles my mind, I can’t believe I’ve experienced it!
But will it be Flop or Future classic? The internet would have you believe the former. Critics list the many failings of the late #AMG #hypercar:
- Weight 1695 kg - too heavy for a track car.
- Same 0-200 as a 765LT, miles cheaper.
- A 0-60 of just 2.8 seconds
- £3 million, and requiring a service of 10’s of thousands every 5k, then an engine rebuild at 30k miles.
So with all its failings why did AMG make it THIS way? Food for thought. After all, the engine and format they chose meant it took them years to make the car road approved, and caused the car not to be certified for the USA customers in the end.
Instead AMG stuck at it, and forced the issue to make the #AMGONE as close to the 2016 F1 car in tech as possible. Along the way they’ve since used the same tech in upcoming vehicles like the new C43 engine, and the upcoming C63S hybrid using much of the same tech.
As it stands, the ONE is a 275 unit car at £3 million each. It’s something few of us will ever get to enjoy, but if done right stands to be a classic.
Formula 1 E Performance engine comes right out of F1 - 1.6 V6, 4 valves per cylinder
Electric exhaust turbo charger (shared with next C63) which revs to 11k! All through a tasty Titanium silencer.
The performance isn’t as simple as you’d think, the Total of 1063 BHP is made up of different parts of the system:
Combustion:- 574BHP
Front motors:- 326BHP
MGU-H :- 122BHP
MGU-K crankshaft :- 163BHP
They weren’t kidding when they said Hybrid! Much in the same way of Lewis’ car, the power comes through Various means. The resulting speed is:
0-60 2.9
0-200 km/h 7.0
0-300 km/h 15.6 s
Torque is not calculable as each part of the system produces its own amount. All that leads to the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system.
EV moody is possible, via the 8.4kw lithium ion battery, only drives 18km in range but is so cool to listen to as you’ll see!!
As for the internals - the body is Carbon monocoque, there’s a 5 link front and rear suspension with crazy Pushrod struts transversely mounted - this allows Roll stiffness and dampening independent of heave and looks the sexiest thing ever in the process. Use Race Plus and Strat 2 modes: it lowers 37/30 mm to full attack mode! Worried about drag? Activate the F1 DRS button on the F1 steering wheel when on the straights for even more speed!
The Drive
Driving the ONE was almost an out of body experience - in that, my brain couldn't process what happened till much later on. However once it sunk in - some things really stood out - even on the GP circuit following the GT Black, there was no point where the car was at full throttle on the straight - it would have eaten up the Black Series if I tried. The gearbox was clunky and slow, reminiscent of the thud from a V10 M5 - yet it almost added to the brutality of the experience. The steering wheel and feel was perhaps the best I’ve ever experienced in a road car and the EV mode was literally the coolest sounding thing I’ve heard come alive in a car! And the engine? The absolute highlight. A visceral experience geared to overload your senses and feed your emotions as a car lover - there’s nothing that comes close to it.
Todays video will also be a tad vlog like, as I wake to give you some insight on how these Press Trips work. We bump into Chris Harris lining the AMG ONE for top gear, and you might see some bloke from Carwow.
We’ll be following AMG DTM legend Bernd Schneider in a GT Black Series. In the first laps, we have 3 highway modes to test - EV full electric, Race full combustion, and Race Safe which combines both. Then out in Race Plus and Strat 2 modes for full attack!
Today, I’m not here to tell you how it compares to a LAF, 918 or the next Hypercar of the week, I’ll leave that to everyone else - I’m here because I’m one of you guys, a driver of normal performance cars. I'm convinced that this car will age beautifully. The performance figures are underwhelming at first compared to other hypercars, but once people stop comparing it to other cars and accept it for what it is, I think people will start to appreciate it. It's not just about paper-specs. It's about how Mercedes-AMG gave themselves the bonkers idea to put modern-day F1 technology in a car and -- after five years, a global pandemic, stricter laws, and all these obstacles that would make any sane car company stop the stupid thing -- THEY ACTUALLY DID IT. This is a car who's story is arguably more interesting than the car itself. Who cares if the Nevera can destroy it on a drag strip or a Koenigsegg has a bajillion horsepower. There has never been and never will be another car like this.

@@srinitaaigaura Firstly the SF90 is not really Ferrari's "hypercar." Their true hypercar is the F40, F50, Enzo, Laferrari and whatever comes next. Also, this car is TEN YEARS newer than those cars you mentioned lol. Compared to similar cars of today its underwhelming considering they touted it as being an F1 car for the road.

Nearly a decade later, this car really makes me appreciate just how much the La Ferrari, P1, and 918 were ahead of their time. I’m not sure we’ll get to see a hypercar from large manufacturers push the envelope like the holy trinity has.

If I'm looking back to find a supercar that was well ahead of its time, that would be the McLaren F1. Not so much the LaFerrari, P1 or 918 Spyder. Even to this day, most cars can't match the top speed of the F1. In fact, only some hypercars can. Remember, the F1 had just 600 + hp and was capable of reaching over 240mph. That is an amazing piece of engineering achievement in the automotive industry.

With the holy trinity, their design, their hybrid technology, and their performance is something that is still an industry standard a decade later. I can’t believe they stuck iPads on the dash 🤢, they really didn’t want this to be a memorable thing. It’s almost like they just had to finish it because it was promised years ago. Now with other hypercars it’s just lost and forgotten. Definitely a flop. Sorry to say but as someone that loves engineering even that alone is not going to save it. Of course Mercedes fan boys will still like it, or people that think current F1 is as good as it was pre-hybrid era when we have V8,V10 and V12 which of course it’s no, not even close. It’s a nod to a crap era of F1 , everything fans hate about it.

looks amazing, imagine it in black. people moaning about exhaust sound, what you forget is there are EU regulations to keep it below a certain sound decibels, If Mercedes could get away with it sounding like a full blown F1 car they would have, Even Nissan have dropped the GTR in Europe because it was to loud to pass regulations. Im sure aftermarket exhaust will make it sound amazing when released.

Clever Mercedes. Create a car with their f1 engine. That means that during the production run of the road car they can test and develop updates to the engine and power train. This can help them with their f1 car without effecting budget cap or the limited dyno time set by the FIA for the race car. Wait until their race car isn't as competitive and start producing the road car to be able to use it for development for F1.

@@GFDNERFERSGAMING they can't make changes to the main internals but within reason they can upgrade/develop other parts such as intake/exhaust, fuel delivery, electronics, gearbox, hybrid system etc etc..... The only time they can make changes to engine internals is if its for reliability/safety reasons and they can prove it and the FIA give approval.

I think the reason why they went through with it is because they didn't want to be the XJ220 of our era. They already presold cars, promised a road-legal F1 drivetrain, and their hands were tied. I don't think they had a choice. Still a technological marvel, but i think in the next few years, we will hear the behind the scenes story of what a colossal boondoggle this car must have been to produce, and how much Merc lost in revenue to follow through on their promise. Wild stuff.

I’d take a Valkyrie over this. However, I definitely see the value of this car outside of just statistics. It’s about the experience of driving a car, and I’m sure this car is an amazing experience. Like I said though, I’d take a Valkyrie because I think it ends up feeling closer to F1 than the AMG One from what I’ve seen.

this video sounds like AMG had to desperately hire someone to write about how good the car is contrary to what people actually think about it. Awesome powertrain that keeps on shutting off everytime the batteries get full to prevent overcharge? wha? car still riddled with bugs despite the first few already in the production line. Crazily complex tiny v6 engine that only generates 577bhp. When we think of F1, V12 and V10 and V8 engines come to mind not the turbo V6's which were mandated to reduce emissions. If this is an F1 car for the road then it should have none of the restrictions that F1 poses and certainly shouldnt weigh 1750Kg's

They should have make lmp1 based car, same as went Koenigsegg or that Praha bohema etc. They seem much more interesting as a real racing car. There is no need for passengers

This car exists only because of F1's limitations regarding engine development. So by making this car, Mercedes could justify to develop their F1 power unit outside FIA's supervision.

It's very cool, but I think unless you are a F1 enthusiast then the black series is a more attractive option. I'd rather have a black series anyways.

They really need to go and try to get a time on track so we can compare it to something, spec wise its just heavier and underpowered compared to what they announced at first, the f1 engine alone might not be worth it for some customers if the performance is lacking.

The car just doesn't have the performance that was expected if it. That's why people are a but disappointed. Just having an F1 engine is not enough compared to it's competition

Yes it does. People just look at wirhht stats and lose their heads without thinking about weight distribution or how that weight comes from things with a net performance gain like batteries or active aero It's better than the competition offering perfect balance of race car and reasonably practical road car not just being road car by name but practically as well
